As a newbie like you I really enjoyed this one. To the point that I have seen it twice already. I went alone the first time because no one I know would sit through a musical for 2 hours and 40 minutes. I went back again with my mom who at 77 doesn’t care for musicals and hates long movies, plays, etc. she was completely immersed the whole time and applauded at the end and even said she wants to see it again. She fell in love with the world and characters (especially Elpheba). I watched a few videos on how the sets were built and the costumes were designed. It’s absolutely amazing. It nearly gave me the same feeling I had as a child watching the Wizard of Oz. Can’t wait for part 2!

For the negativity that you have about some of the characters that don’t seem important or uninteresting keep in mind that there is a part two and that they are also a part of another universe in the Wizard of Oz, they are absolutely integral to the second half of the musical. To see an outsiders perspective, though to have those opinions is really cool though I truly hope the second half will shock you as much as it did the first time I saw it on Broadway.

I hope people realize that this musical came out in 2003. You are not going to find the music or maybe even some of the themes “ground breaking” because it’s already 21 years later. But I hope you can try to imagine what it felt like watching this back in 2003 because that’s why this musical was so beloved because at THAT TIME the music and the themes WERE ground breaking. Also, I know the sub plots and characters don’t make sense but that’s exactly because this is only Act One. It will have a payoff on Act Two. All k can say is, as someone who watched the original cast on Broadway with Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth back in 2004, I totally appreciate the efforts done in the movie.

Stephen Scwartz wrote The music and lyrics for Pippin and Godspell. In my opinion, he writes musical numbers that fill in the spots that the show needs filling. He writes songs that fit the moment and make the moment work. So, sometimes they can feel generic. His songs do not usually aim to be transformative.

Thanks for the review! I hope this will be to non-musical fans what Spider-verse was to people like myself who aren't really Marvel or comic book fans. It was fun. I didn't regret seeing it, and I appreciated the artistry even though I didn't feel any need to rewatch it. (I also didn't know it was a 2-part going in.) I can understand why some of my friends loved it, and I respected their excitement even though I didn't feel that energy myself. Musical theater is such a niche genre that if normies can just come in and feel like they've had a pretty good time and might be interested in seeing another musical someday, that's a win.

I saw an early screening...going in hoping for the best, but expecting the worst....and was applauding as the credits rolled, with tears in my eyes. I love the theater, but movie musicals have sucked for a while, except for Tick,Tick, Boom in the past decade. This one blew me out of the water in it's talent both on and off the screen. It was beyond my expectations. Yes, this is Ariana Grande's movie (expect an Oscar nom and maybe win), but Erivo may get a nom with this movie, but the depth of this role comes in part 2, so that may be her time to win. The stars and the director shine here, as the movie builds and builds to a wonderful final 20 minutes that sets up the second movie, but makes audiences applaud with tears in their eyes.as the credits roll. I wanted and was ready to for part two after 2 1/2 hrs....i found the second half tight, i felt the first half was a little loose and could've been tightened. The second half for me built up nicely and culminated in a great final 20 min.

Excited to hear this kind of review from someone who wasn’t an obsessed fan. Can’t wait to see it tonight. That being said, since you haven’t seen the second half, I promise you, her sister, and the other characters are both paramount to this story, and to the wizard of oz. I think you’ll be impressed with where it ends up, it blew my mind anyway. That’s the trouble with splitting it, some will be like wtf is going on with these “fillers”, but they aren’t. They’re all critical. Her sister not having the same skin color as her is imperative. Wait for it, it’s worth it.

I LOVE LOVE THE BOOKS!!! I never saw the play, but I do love musicals. However, the original book discusses all these things that you felt weren't wrapped up. I heard the play changed the father perspective. He did love Elphaba, but he knew she was a strong little girl and felt that she didn't need as much. The book skipped from Elphaba being around 3/4 to her being 17. Her father didn't come back into the novel until her sister became the ruler over Munchkin land. Elphaba experienced a lot during that time. The animal situation, too.. it's so much to the book that I am sure the play could not show. 😂 💯 So, I would say at least read the book. It will definitely keep you entertained. I read the book ten times when I first purchased it. I am reading it again now. I have the entire series.

I am so excited!! Seeing it on Sunday. I'm happy this finally got made because Broadway unfortunately is so inaccessible to so many people and when a good film adaptation is made (like they used to do in the 40s,50s, 60s etc) it gives everyone a chance to experience it. Your critique about the side characters is one you would probably have with the Broadway show as well and one I agree with in the production. They are utilized a bit more in the second act (the second movie) but I even though I haven't seen the film it seems like they did exactly what the show does which keeps them as very surface level characters. Great review!!

Read the book decades ago. Way before I saw the musical or even watched traded bootlegs. Though fun, I always thought that the musical adaptation was missing plot points and felt rushed. I haven’t seen the movie, but it’s interesting you say that Nessarose was just there in the film, it’s like that in show to be honest. Along with the Professor, Fieryo, and Bock (forgot how to spell his name lol) I would’ve thought they would flesh out some aspects for the film adaptation at least. Well, it’s nice they kept it true to the stage version. 🤭 It’s a fun show and No Good Deed in act two is amazing!!!

@ sure. I hated the way the songs were chopped up w so many breaks & interludes esp defying gravity. When a song’s original intention & build up is interrupted again & again the flow of emotional tension is hindered. The songs also had an annoying poppy electronic beat instead of the sweeping orchestral beauty ive come to love. I didn’t love the way Erivo performed the songs-she sang w less vibrato & brightness than she normally does for example giving a pop/ R&B quality to the songs which i hated. She sounded less impressive than the countless other Elphabas ive heard sing these songs. Goldblum & Yeoh can’t sing. The overall feel felt more like the Wizard of Oz than Wicked. Oz is an oppressive place & the environment of the stage show captures that (the barren vines, brambles, thorns, deep hues of purples, burgundies & greens) while this movie did not. The costuming lacked storytelling. For example in the stage show Glinda wears pink ONCE. Elphaba is supposed to dress in simple frocks & frumpy boots to portray her poor background and how all the family’s money is spent on Nessa; she doesn’t wear fancy black dresses from day one. There was absolutely no storytelling w the costumes. Rather they detract from the story. I cld go on. But anyway… glad others can enjoy. I obviously didnt.
