In L. Frank Baum’s book (which Wicked is a prequel to- not the 1939 movie) the Munchkins are not described as being super short like a dwarf, but just shorter than everyone else. When Dorothy gets there she describes them as shorter than the adults she is used to, but about the same height as her. Dorothy is significantly taller than the Munchkins in the 1939 movie, whose creators took it upon themselves to cast like that.

In the original wonderful Wizard of Oz novel, there are some munchkins who are actually tall and one of those munchkins is the tin man Nicholas chopper in in Gregory Maguire‘s novel. The reason why there are some munchkins, who are tall is because they marry somebody who has a tall stature And tall stature represents higher power because alphabet is family has a high power status. That’s why all her family members is tall.

@@laneyurban789 There's more a one can do with movies that you can't do on stage. On stage it's limited. Movies and screen plays can develop characters and the relations between one or another whereas stage productions can leave an audience filling in the gaps. There are many including myself after seeing the stage production with a crap ton of questions. After reading Maguire's book those questions have been answered. I honestly haven't watched the movie yet but I understand there's more book than stage production. So we'll see.

I happened to see Wicked last night at an early screening that Amazon Prime offered through Fandango. The theater was packed! I took a friend who has never seen the musical and knew nothing about it, and both of us enjoyed it to different extents. I'd give it a solid B with Cynthia Erivo's acting and singing being the standout in the movie. As a fan of the musical, I wasn't a fan of some of the creative choices in extending/changing some of the musical numbers. That being said, the movie could have down away with Jeff Goldblum's take on Sentimental Man. I'm really looking to seeing the next part.

The school that the characters are attending is a University. Glinda and Elphaba are college students and explain why some of the other students look older than what they are. I think this version of the movie is truly based on the novel and taking some concept of the Broadway production because the book is very dark. Plus some munchkins in OZ are all not small. Most of them are regular size according to the author of the book. It's just that Hollywood made them all small especially in the first Wizard of Oz movie...... Kristin Chenoweth stated in an interview that Ariana Grande is truly paying homage to her but put her own stamp on it. FUN FACT: The main reason why they didn't actually use short people in this film is because of Peter Dinklage. He kind of frowned upon that in Hollywood which he made a big fuss it was a controversy when they announced the live-action Snow White and the Seven Dwarf which he complained about why do all short people always have to play stereotypical roles.

I saw it last night. It does the stage play musical justice. It had so many Easter eggs from the Wizard of Oz, stage musical, the book, and some surprise cameos, music, dancing sequences, cinematography. The two actresses Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande owned their roles as the witches. The whole cast and crew I think did an amazing job. My husband went to the play with me and also to the movie last night. It was funny because it was mostly women and a couple of guys in the theater. I think most of the guys were going to Gladiator 2 and the women going to Wicked. But when he's not interested in a movie, he goes outside for a lot of smoke breaks and leaves early to go get the car. He stayed until the very end To Be Continued on the screen. Will probably see it again with mom, sisters, nieces that want to go.

I saw it last night, and as an older person (68) raised on the 1939 Wizard of Oz yearly on TV, i was enchanted and thrilled by this rendition of the Broadway musical. Yes, it's a fantasy movie, so there are bound to be moments or choices that require a suspension of your disbelief, but that is a part of art. Imperfections are slight, miscastings are based on age and bitterness, not the talent of the performers. Yes, movies are different than theatrical offerings, however, I found this effort not only well staged and performed, but exceptionally so. It takes the theatrical material and brings it to life, with extra material that enriches and explains material that is sparse in the original. I was enthralled and enchanted by the movie and look forward to the second part. I believe that both Erivo and Grande deserve an Oscar nomination for their wonderful accomplishments. I give it an enthusiastic 8.5 out of 10...or on your scale, a 4 out of 5.

For part 2 (SPOILERS BELOW)…. I think the best gift they have is splitting the movie in 2 because as a stage show, it Act 2 asks you suspend a LOT of disbelief for how quickly things move, get super dark, and then instantly wrap up with a nice little bow. As my one friend who saw wicked for the first time recently put it bluntly “if my freshman year college roommate told clearly dangerous people to use my sister against me directly leading to her murder because her fiancé fell in love with me by me doing…nothing, I don’t think I would forgive her that quickly lol” They’ve gotta lean into the conflict between the two of them more than just one “fight” scene that is largely played for a laugh.

it's Goldblumin' time! my interpretation of The Wizard in Wicked is that he's kind of a cowardly fascist dictator, which is linked to the "something bad" happening in Oz, the animals having their voices silenced; I absolutely love this musical for being about otherness, colour, disability, queerness, transness! (I always said that Elphaba was Assigned Green At Birth, and Wicked is her coming out story, and also the story of how losing people she loves when she is true to herself will be inevitable... oof, relatable)
