As someone who has been playing traditional ska, on bass, for most of my life, Gil here really seems to know what he is talking about. I am even slightly suprised this is the case, since so many people continue to get it wrong. His groove is pretty rad.

I was in the Allstonians from their formation and we were lucky enough to have had Lloyd Knibb train the drummers we had. Lloyd sat in with us sometimes as he lived just outside Boston.

A-W-E-S-O-M-E!!! You are really the first and only drumming teacher on youtube who explains this riding on the hi hat bell. I'm also playing the drums in a traditional ska and rocksteady band but I only had a teacher for four months. It was nearly all about self education. And this riding on the hi hat bell is so important to sound like Lloyd Knibb. But I never could imitate it exactly. So I think I'll get your DVD very soon!! ;-) Run di riddim!

Gil, if you read these, I am a reggae/ska (and others) bass player (played with itals, nysje, some of the culture guys, etc..) If you are in NY, hit me up please. I am looking to get into some serious projects again.

I've read a couple of times that the one-drop drumming style originated in rocksteady (1966/67), but the drumming in ska (which came before rocksteady) also seems to be a version of the one-drop.

The DVD is awesome..i've watched it a few times through already. I play rocksteady on an old slingerland kit that's very resonant...and i was happy to hear Gil confirm my setup that Ska / Rocksteady be done on a 60's kit....but that Marley-style 70's reggae be done on a really muted setup ( not my thing at all ).

@frezzeline ~ i don't remember what this Ska cover is called, or who it was [i think i heard Hepcat do it once as well], but the original jazz tune it's based on is called Coming Home.
