Been waiting to see if the v&a would do another Halloween video. Another interesting, thoughtful presentation. The two ladies are so well spoken and knowledgeable. More please!

Great video, love it! Just a little remark: Dürer's witch is carrying a distaff. The spindle is stuck in the fibres tied onto it, but the big stick she is carrying is a distaff.

I love that at its' publication, the MAlleus Malefecarum was derided by fellow clergymen. "What's Heinrich on about?" until a king picked it up and ran with it...

My ancestor, Sarah Wild (es) was hung as a witch in the Salem Witchcraft Trials of 1692. She was killed on April 21, 1692. I have the transcripts of the trail. It’s very interesting, but sad.

My favourite witches are the Sanderson Sisters. 😊 They are good for Halloween costumes too.

I love witches and always have been obsessed by them. Them and vampires, its the dark side but very much misunderstood stories about who they were and what they actually were doing.

This overview seems well-intentioned, but it never bothers to define witchcraft or explain who or what a witch actually is. There’s no mention of Wicca as a spiritual practice with ancient origins and modern practitioners. There’s no acknowledgment that many of the women who were executed during the witch hunts were those with arcane knowledge - herbalists, healers - or simply eccentric loners singled out for persecution. And you didn’t investigate *why* the image makeover - from evil to sympathetic - occurred when it did. In any case, it was fascinating to see an actual copy of the Malleus Maleficarum and some of its chilling text.

I thought there was a women living in Ireland who was tried and executed as a witch in the 1880’s.

This was a really terrible history of witch trials which were rare in most of the UK, but in Scotland bordered on a consistent campaign of violence against women. Around 500 people were executed in England, while 2500 were executed in Scotland, which like now had a much smaller population.

Almost as if this video isn't about the history of witch trials but rather representations of witches 🤯

Almost as if it's all about representation because witches aren't real, @MissZeD10.

@@blueprairiedog If witches aren't real then being convicted of witchcraft is not possible...
@blueprairiedog2 ай бұрын
@slytheringingerwitch No, because people can be convicted of a crime that never happened. E.g., murder conviction when it was really a suicide.
@blueprairiedog2 ай бұрын
@@slytheringingerwitch So witches must be real because people were killed for being witches.

"L'art du travestissement" doesn't mean The art of fancy dress, but rather "The art of cross-dressing". You'd think the V&A could afford a professional translator.

10-15% of people executed for witchcraft in Europe were men. So a pretty small share of the total.
