Leopard Geckos are some of the best pet animals you could ever keep. Reptiles can make awesome pets and all sorts of lizards seem to be becoming more popular to keep as pets for children and adults. Weather it's your first or fiftieth pet reptile, Leopard Geckos make great cold blooded companions. These medium sized pet lizards only get about 7-10 inches on average and weight in at a mere 50-80 grams usually. Giant Leopard Geckos and Super Giant Leopard Geckos are outliers of course. The space requirement is also very easy with a minimum size enclosure being a 20 gallon long tank or about 30x18 inches in floor space. If you wanted to go larger with a 40 gallon enclosure or even bigger that would also be a great idea! To keep your new friend at the correct temperature I recommend an overhead heat source like a halogen light or maybe a ceramic heat emitter with a stone under the heat source to catch the warmth. You can also heat the enclosure form the bottom with heat tape or a heat mat on a thermostat if you choose. Offering hides on both sides and a humid hide to help the animal shed and hydrate is also a great idea. Bioactive enclosures are amazing for Leopard Geckos and I think these types of gecko setups really bring out natural behavior in your gecko friend. The diet is also simple and feeding all sorts of insects like Crickets and meal worms and Dubia roaches and black soldier fly larvae is super fun to watch your gecko hunt. These amazing little lizards are so fun and really there is no wonder Leopard Geckos make such amazing pets for beginner and advanced reptile keepers. Stay tuned for updates on Cheech and the gang and don't forget to smash that subscribe button!

My mom said no to snakes and I still do what I want cause they never come upstairs so I'm probably gonna get a small snake I can easily hide. Also don't be like me 🤣I'm crazy. But I also still live with my mother cause I'm disabled. I'm hopefully gonna get a house if I get on SSI and maybe have a friend stay with me. Maybe that's something you could do eventually.

@@ItsMasonMoney IAnd anyone else thinking this- for the sake of the animal, just make this joke as a joke, but don't actually really try to hide a snake or other pet. They need things that would be very, very hard to conceal, and if you happen to be without your own reliable funds and transportation you might not be able to provide veterinary care if and when an urgent need arises. Also it will be found and you will probably lose it with no chance to get another. There's a pretty good video on this channel I think about slowly convincing your parents to allow a pet, and sneaking would wreck your chances, whereas the slow approach and proving responsibility might change their minds eventually. I hope it does and you guys can have reptiles!

This happened to me with a tarantula. I was staying in town for a winter break back in college, and was happy to look after other students exotics while they went home. I ended up with the tarantula all spring semester and summer break. She was super low maintenence, so it just became my routine to look after. Most of a year later, the student reached out to me. Turns out, they had a medical emergency over winter break and was in the hospital for much of spring semester. They were super apologetic for the radio silence, and took back their invert. I'm just glad that I didn't have to decide if I was up for keeping it or not xD

It’s good that you’re planning on upgrading! It’s good that he’s on paper towel for now, new reptiles should be quarantined on paper towel for at least six weeks (ideally three months) to monitor their health. After, a suitable loose substrate such as a soil/playsand or soil/sand/clay mix is best for digging enrichment. I’d also switch to overhead heating. A halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer or dimming thermostat is the most natural and beneficial option, Arcadia’s deep heat projector is the second best option.

i raised my leopard gecko in a 20gal when he was a baby and moved him to a 4'x2'x18" (90gal) as an adult. he absolutely uses all the space, he scurries around, and i installed a second level of platform for him to climb. he loves climbing and has never fallen over, and he has six different hides to choose from. imo the 4x2x18 is the best tank for an adult, and now i put him back in his 20gal whenever i clean his regular tank, and he absolutely gets angry whenever i move him into his small tank. he tries to climb out of it and is generally unhappy in that small of an enclosure. i've been looking into setting up a bioactive enclosure for both him and my ball python since viewing your channel, thanks for all the tips :)

I just rescued three leopard geckos and one of them (has vitamin deficiency) immediately ran to the water bowl and chugged until he vomited. He’s fine now, but it just goes to show just how dehydrated they can get if you keep them on the wrong bedding (they were on dry reptibark) and with improper humidity. That being said, the only time I usually give water - other than after rescue - is when I give them a wet mossy bowl/hide during shed. :3 Good info here, as always! ETA: My rescue with MBD started eating after 20 minutes of UVB. She hadn’t eaten in weeks and was fading fast, according to the guy who dropped them off. She is resting and eating regularly today, just 12 hours later. ✨

Got my 7 year old girl in a 40 gallon breeder bioactive and she loves it! I also use a halogen light and a dark rock to create a basking spot. Halogen lights are apparently better then heat mats. They are super easy to care for and they don’t seem to lose their tails super easily unlike crested geckos. In terms of care requirements they are super easy to care for as long as ones getting them are okay only feeding insects. Also be prepared to kill plants and you may get fungus gnats with a bioactive they are great but aren’t for everyone.

I am so happy that people in the United States and Asia are just starting to attempt to breed the Peter's banded skink, which is a very smart idea considering the fact that it has the potential to be just as popular if not more so than the leopard gecko. For Desert reptiles I would use the powdered blue or powdered orange isopods since they can thrive in a dryer environment then other isopods, as a combination cleanup crew and secondary food source.

I had a leopard gecko that I lost in a house fire in '09. Her name was "Dottie", and I miss her to this day. I got her as a baby, and I was not ready for her BEAUTIFUL colors! Whenever I took her out in public, everyone would go nuts on her bright yellow background, deep purple spots, and her pale purple tail. I kept her in a 10gal aquarium, with ground walnut shell substrate to prevent her from getting impacted with sand. I had a shallow "stone" water dish, some fake plants and driftwood to explore, and a hollow log hide. I used a UV "day" spotlight on a timer, and a cooler red "night" light on all the time. I fed her a mix of gutloaded and dusted crickets, with the occasional waxworms or mealworms. I once fed her a pinky mouse when I was considering breeding her, but all she did was kill it and leave it in a corner of the enclosure without eating it. (My wife was traumatized!) I sprayed her enclosure daily, and took her out regularly to "play". She seemed very happy and healthy, with a nice plump tail! I have also kept African fat tails, bearded dragons, and green angles. The geckos were by far the easiest to care for, and my favorites!

I have a small exotic pet rescue/sanctuary (small lizards and snakes, arachnids/other invertebrates, and ferrets) I rescued my leopard gecko about 2 years ago from an extremely dire situation. It took lots of time, money and patience to get him in prime condition and tolerant of human contact but now he (and the uromastyx I rescued along with him) looks and acts like a whole new animal.

If you're not grabbing the tail and pulling it about or handling them roughly they shouldn't drop it 😊 They're such wonderful little characters , don't let that put you off getting one 🦎💚

He is the sweetest boy when my boyfriend handles him but with me he just loses his shit. I do the exact same things as my boyfriend and I’m even the one who always feeds him, cleans his enclosure and overall spends the most time with him. It really breaks my heart… I’m really trying my best and his temperatures, enclosure, hiding spots are all perfect so I don’t think that’s the problem. Some people wash their hands with something strong before handling their gecko and their gecko bit them cuz of the smell I think (So dont wash ur hands with a strong odor if u do xd) Furthermore it might be the way you grab them? Or you wake them up while they are sleeping? (When I was a kid and dumb pet owner my hamster bit me cuz of that) and last reason might be in my opinion that you have extremely cold hands and ur boyfriend doesnt? Anyway, I would give it time. @@nightinggale6470 you’re right- I think my dimensions are off maybe it’s the 36x18x12. It’s huge, like a 50ish gallon maybe? Exoterra with the two doors and removable screen top. Does that sound right? It fits five hides for him, two underground, one hot one hot humid and one cool and I used 3 inch pvc elbows for the underground tunnels. He’s still a little guy, maybe about a year old now, and he is dwarfed in it. I also made the levels to maximize his space since they’re not arboreal, but he loves to dig and I know I didn’t get the full sized one, I got the biggest but shorter one. He’s got plants and his roley poley bug- speaking of- how many isopods is too many isopods? I can’t see the spring tails so those might be dead but I have so many isopods. They like exploded in the tank.

Man, I'm extremely happy I saw this today. I went into a pet store to get crickets for my Emperor Scorpion. They were bringing in some new reptiles to sell I believe, and I said the Ball python was quite cute. The lady (manager I presume) was surprised to see that I said that since people are the way they are with snakes and such. I got into telling her about how I raise Retics and 1 Green Anaconda, but somehow she seems to have translated that to me being a reptile expert because she just out of the blue decided to give me a Leopard Gecko! She pointed out some of the starter stuff for it and I have heat mats and other things I keep for my snakes, but I was stressing out over just being given something like this. I do like to make sure I can take the best care of my reptiles, but this is my first lizard, so I'll likely get it a bioactive setup. For now, I'm happy it can thrive in a tub for now since that's what I keep my very small baby snakes in when they're too small for a PVC enclosure. This video definitely helped me know what path to take to make sure this little one thrives in my care. Thank you!
@nightinggale6470
@nightinggale6470 3 жыл бұрын
Just fyi: heat mats are not a good heat source. A halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer/dimming thermostat is the most natural and beneficial option. They produce IRA and IRB like the sun, heat that penetrates deep into the skin tissue and heats them far more effectively than heat mats. Whereas heat mats only produce IRC, which only heats the surface of their skin. If you search “Frances Baines heat” on KZbin, the first video/podcast that comes up is worth watching. Also, there’s no such thing as too small for a PVC enclosure. As long as there’s enough clutter and coverage, baby snakes can go in a large PVC right away.

coco coir is actually kind of looked down upon in the Leo community now just because it's very dusty.
