When I was little, the first snake I got to handle was a wild Garter snake. That snake was so chill about being handled by 4 little kids for probably an hour. Never musked or anything. Absolutely took off like an arrow the moment it was back on the ground, though. I'm always going to have a soft spot for Garters because of that experience.

Love that garter snakes are getting more attention and it makes me wish people would get into water snakes more too. They may not be the prettiest of snakes (my local common water snakes are typically brown or grayish brown with little to no pattern), but they tame real easily, seem to cohab well with themselves or garter snakes (personal experience), and you can make some real cool enclosures for them. I had a water snake and two garter snakes in a 40 gallon (36 in by 18 in) back in the day that I had built a small pool in on one end with a submersible pump that I put feeder fish in. Since I no longer do wild caught I'm not likely to ever keep them in the near future, but I still enjoy having both snake species in addition to my regular ones.
