Only a reptile depending on who you ask, but there are quite a few parrots that keepers brought back from extinction. Blue Spix macaws were just reintroduced to the wild in Brazil after being declared extinct, and they were saved by entirely by private collections and animals donated from private collections to zoos.

Mexican here! Axolotls are pretty difficult to reintroduce to the wild, because as you mentioned there are invasive species and pollution in the lake of Xochimilco, also some people capture them from the wild and sell them illegally. Although there are lots of wild centers that are specialized in preservation of them, there hasn’t been a way to prevent them from dying in the wild. They are also so important in medical research!

Hey Wicken! First off, I know this is totally not related to the video. BUT! I wanted to ask you a question, so I just found your most recent video and am posting it here. What are your thoughts on keeping a wild-caught gecko? There's a tiny mediterranean house gecko outside of my apartment that I would love to capture and keep in a 10 gal bioactive terrarium I have set up. On Reddit though, they're all recommending against keeping wild-caught geckos. If it's just the shorter lifespan, I don't mind, but are there other considerations too? Like could it ruin the bioactive terrarium? Thanks a lot!

If you check out Creatures of Nightshade, they did a 2-year experiment on diet vs condition of Dragon Snakes and discovered that the ones fed exclusively on tadpoles and frogs had the best condition. The more fish included in the diet, the worse the condition of the snakes. What cool creatures these are, they hunt their food in water. If you have never checked out the site you should as long as you aren't squeamish about the snakes eating live prey. Some animals need to do this.

The electric blues are funny because in captivity they very prolific breeders, as opposed to in the wild where they’re only found on a particular species of tree, I think there’s a species of phelsuma that’s the same way, they very prolific inside of this one area, but as soon as you go outside of that area they are nowhere to be found Also, electric blues are no longer imported and haven’t been for awhile and earless monitors are almost nonexistent in the pet trade, despite how easy they are to breed once setup correctly

Great video! I believe humanity’s desire to seek, learn and explore should not be suppressed, but encouraged responsibly. When we permanently encroach on an animal’s ecosystem (which should be discouraged) I believe it is our responsibility to protect those species. Maybe captive breeding gives us the time we need to figure out how to live harmoniously with said species. All that to say, i enjoyed the video and You earned another subscriber. Thank you sir.

Has any effort been made to breed the San Francisco Garter Snake (Thamnophis sirtalis tetrataenia) in captivity? With climate change, disappearing food supply (frogs which are also dying out), etc. -- we seem to be waiting for the last 1,000 or so to die out so we can build yet one more strip mall.
