Another weird trait I've found over the years, is that some of my abronias (not all) refuse to use their claws when handled i.e on my hand/arm. It's very strange because its almost as if they know they can scratch you and so you see their front and hind gingerly walk and put no tension on their finger like appendages.

Adam. To help with your puppy to quit peeing whenever you get home. This is an easy thing to do. Go to whatever outside door you are teaching her to go outside to do her business. Never make eye contact and call her outside. Once she is outside, then make eye contact. I'm pretty sure you and everyone else might know this. Never get angry for a dog peeing g when you look at them. This is their way of showing you are the leader of the pack.

The idea of a small reptile wanting to get onto a very large, warm giant that's likely to protect them from predators and also regularly provides them with food and enrichment is def something worth considering. While it may be debatable whether they have "affection" varying from one species to the next, it's def undeniable that they do have *trust.* And that's enough for me :)

Put the words "small child" in the place of "small reptile" and tell me what the difference is. They seek the same thing and gain trust - which is a LOT! My bearded dragon is actually affectionate. When anyone in the home is sad, he will claw at the glass and cuddle to cheer us up. Anytime my daughter cries he tries to see why and comfort her. One time he bite my wife on accident and stopped eating and when she brought him out to show him she was okay he cuddled with her and refused to leave. He did the same thing for me when my dad died and I was a wreck. At the moment he's shedding so he's moody and wishes the world would burn. But when's he's not shedding he's loving.

My bearded dragons do greet me when I come inside, my male licks away my tears when I cry, never have trained them and they act trained and sometimes come when called! I must be lucky with the Beardies I got. Then again, I treat them like actual human beings and they have no rules, they appreciate that and it makes them the most respectful, sentient, understanding lil guys I've ever owned. Honestly, I have seen a lot of "affection" from the sliders I kept growing up. Similar to how the dog loses her mind when I walk in the house, the turtles would go bananas if I specifically walked in the room. Granted, a lot of this was begging for food, but it doesn't feel much different from how the cat treated us. My young sulcata is similar when he gets the zoomies. If he sees my hand drop in with fingers wiggling, he barrels towards it for a shell scratch, does a quick dance, another lap, and repeats the process a dozen times or so before he gets tired.

Bearded dragons are amazing and enjoy hanging with Loki everyday. Then there is Titan, mascot at the gym and he literally runs to the front of the enclosure when I arrive no matter what time of day it is. Interesting video. We cannot judge "love" from species so different from ours. Dogs were specifically selected to be visibly affectionate to humans, so we recognize their affection easily without having to put in the work to learn their language, we forced them to learn ours. Cats have their own way of showing affection, but because it's not the "human-sanctioned" way like dogs many people don't recognize it and say cats are heartless when humans are the ones expecting worship. Reptiles are much simpler creatures in comparison. I do not think they are capable of "love" as we understand it, but they are intelligent enough to understand when specific humans are good or bad to them, and to form trust bonds, and that's enough to form a relationship, even if it's a simple one. Trust is the basis of any relationship, after all 👍

I know this comment is over e year old but I just want to say that I think its less we bred dogs to be easier for us to read emotionally as opposed to our species having spent that much time with that animal that both evolved to recognize eachothers emotions.

Lovely video! I had a bearded dragon a few years ago. It was my first and only experience caring for a reptile until now, and it was truly awesome. She was social and affectionate in that she enjoyed my company and was curious, wanting to be part of what was happening. We enjoyed basking in the sun together, too (although she always had access to shade). She would call my attention by scraping the terrarium to tell me it was toilet time hahaha (she was very clean and preferred toilet time in a tub with about 1 inch of warm water). She lived for about 8-9 years happy and free. ♡ I am now considering a second experience and your video about their personality/behavior traits is very helpful, thank you!

The way I see affection in reptiles (or at least in *my* reptile) is that they may not love you like a dog or even some cats, but they'll learn who you are and for a non-domesticated animal that isn't really social, just having one beg to come out of its enclosure or for food or to or even climb into your hands is really amazing. My kingsnake doesn't tend to stick around me for too long unless he finds a comfy spot; interacting with him is basically "Hello human. You have mouse? No mouse? I go find mouse." It's still pretty great that he'll usually at least check me out before moving onto other things. Plus, based on his attempts to eat me, he's comfortable enough with me to try to eat in my hands, so that's nice. Sort of.

Firm agreement that the more skinks I get the more I realize skinks are some of the friendliest reptiles in general.
@rottweilerfun95202 жыл бұрын
I agree , skinks are really curious and friendly. I've managed to make friends with the wild Broadhead and 5 lined skinks that live in my yard. They are wild but I can hand feed them. I did the same thing when I lived in Tennessee. There was a pair of Broadheads that lived under a crack in the cement walkway to the house, a huge male and female. They got to where they'd crawl all over me and let me scratch their chins. The ones here I'm not there with yet but two of the female 5 lined skinks like to nibble on my hand. They're pretty funny.

My red eared slider is pretty affectionate toward me as far as a turtle goes, though most of it is probably food based. He goes crazy when I walk in the room and he will follow me around and climb in my lap ❤🥺

I agree about the warmth part at the end, I know my ball python doesn't love me like a dog would but she seems content on my lap on the couch and even tries to get into my pocket because it's dark and warm.

I would have Ball Pythons on my top 5 affectionate reptiles list. Especially my Princess. She is always trying to come out and when I take her out she just loves to be with me. My male snickers also enjoys being with me but sometimes he is more like a cat he loves me but sometimes he just wants to be left alone.

My Burm shoots out of the bin every time I open it. It's not a feeding response. She just wants to see what's up. It's so cute and why I chose her over all the other hatchlings, even if they were all fancy morphs and she's just a wild type.

I have an ackie monitor that absolutely loves people. He loves me so much he tries to mate with my hand almost every time I get him out of the enclosure 😂. He is the most dog like lizard I've ever seen and I love him to death

As far as "reptiles" who love you back goes, definitely turkeys, hands down. They're so affectionate that you want to give them a name, and not feed them to your family on Thanksgiving. The last time we kept them, every time I'd walk into the barn, I'd have two happy turkeys run at me with their wings out wide, wanting affection. You'd think they just wanted food. Nope. They ignored it and crowded me while I was going about my business. Yeah. They're still alive. Clever girls. 🦖

Hen turkey are awesome pets! You want something you won't feel bad about making into stuffed roasted goodness? Get an aggressive Tom turkey😢! My friend had one, and we were never so glad to see "D*ckheads" head roll and smell him in the oven! Basted with almost a whole stick of real butter and spices. Sadly, if I tell the rub recipe, I have to kill ya!😂

I had a pet duck as a child who acted that same way! She would fly into my arms if I whistled and loved following me around to see what I was up to. She eventually flew off to the lake in our neighborhood (I think my dad’s fish pond wasn’t interesting enough anymore lol) and would still visit me even though she was now technically feral. I brought her some duck food and fruits/veggies a couple times a week and would look for her every time I happened to be riding my bike in the area. When she ended up having ducklings she brought them to me and let me get up close. It was really cool and unexpected to have such a lovely bond with her! Side note: we have a lot of wild turkeys out here and they are funny little things! A lot of personality 🙂🦃

I absolutely agree with the idea that reptiles may not “love” in the sense most people think of, but they can absolutely bond and trust their owner. I also fully believe they can get to a point where they enjoy being with their owners. Our Blue Eyed Lucy (named Lucy) not only seeks to come out of her enclosure, but she has legitimately responded to my voice when I talked to her while in her enclosure. While our other Ball Pythons seem to enjoy affection and being handled, literally none of them seek attention and handling or respond to my voice talking to them the way Lucy does. Reptiles are incredible creatures, and who’s to say they aren’t over time slowly evolving as we continue to own and work with them to become more and more “intelligent” and or capable of “feelings” that we’ve never known them to be capable of??
@user-rd3ou5ev6o Жыл бұрын
I hate to break your bubble, but im 99% sure Ball Pythons literally don't have ears to respond to your voice with.
@tracysweatt5401 Жыл бұрын
@@user-rd3ou5ev6o, they absolutely do have ears. They have all the main parts of the ear, it’s all just internal. “Snakes do not have an external ear, but they do have all the parts of the inner ear that we do. Their stapes-called a “columella”-is slightly different from ours in that it connects to the jawbone, enabling them to sense vibrations. However, they can only hear a portion of the sounds we hear.”

I may have a one of one in the entirety of corn snakes, but the girl I have chilling in my hair on my profile, she is a major sweetheart. I open her enclosure and put my hand at the entrance, I call her name, and she comes crawling right up to my hand and comes up my arm. Also anytime I play some rock, when shes in her enclosure in her cave, she will come out. It's almost like she enjoys the music and she will almost give me a look of why aren't you taking me out. I love your videos! They further prove that reptiles do have personalities and are truly amazing animals!

At one time in the past , I had a Senegal chameleon. Whenever I went near the tank , it always climbed a branch near the corner of the enclosure. It would walk right out and sit on my arm and seemed to enjoy being handled. Never had any other chams do that.

My mom has a beardie that I interact with every time I visit. They also tend to kinda have their own unique personalities too. My mom's "Thor" is definitely a goofball, but he's loves to nuzzle into your arms or behind your neck where it's most warm. Very cute.

I think reptiles do feel affection. So they go to you because you provide food, warmth and security. Yeah, exactly why a human baby wants it's mother. When you break it down all affection is a conditioned response to someone who can provide something that you need.

I *thought* some of the ink looked new! Congrats, it looks fantastic. I do think a lot of reptiles will actually choose to interact with the giant warm trees they know are safe. It's a special kind of Trust, if not love exactly like a mammal may show with oxytocin involved. My tortoise would come to my hands when he saw them offered. I think he associated me with food and good things.

I remember owning a Schneiders skink before, he had only three legs so I named him Trey Waltz. He was the most affectionate little devil on three legs and I loved him so much. I spoiled that guy, and I miss him a lot. Now I'm trying to decide between a beardie, BTS (owned both in the past), or some other odd lizard. My two Argentine tegus and Ackie monitors are also very affectionate, sometimes my big red tegu wants me to hold his paw while he eats (he won't otherwise depending on his mood that day) and he runs up to climb onto my shoulder when I open his cage.

I call my BP affectionate because of how it trusts me. When I hold her, shes often turns completely relaxed. She knows that Im not just warm, but Im the thing that would never let her fall, even when she seems to be scared of heights in every other occasion.
