Looks like this was filmed back around 2008, now, in 2018 the US is a net oil exporter.

Ok new post instead ing of responding to comments received. Electric cars are the future but are not the solution. The production of batteries and the actual production of the electrical energy from hydrocarbons is more energy intensive than traditional engineering solutions - fact. If you are using more energy then you can bet your bottom dollar that it's from fossil fuels/hydrocarbons in some form or another. The use of alternative energy sources has not proved to be 100% reliable due to the lack of power storage or more importantly the size and cost of energy storage. Until this issue is resolved National Grids who push for use of renewable have to employ some resilience from the hydrocarbon burning power generation. Otherwise revert to Nuclear which even some of the environmentalists are saying may be a solution. This is by no means an open and shut case. The fact that electric cars can travel at speed and for long ranges does not negate the fact that they use more energy during their lifecycle than traditional cars. This is the old case of letting future generations resolve present day problems which I for one thought we were going to move out of this circle of stupidity.

I wonder if the interviewer's nuclear-electric car vision could happen with nuclear fusion energy...

well boyos, this one sure as hell didn't age well did it. lol. Not only are electric cars some of the fastest cars on the market, they're some of the most sought after models out there. The peak oil nonsense (the US is now producing more oil than it ever has in history because of fracking in the Bakken), thinking cars are going to run on lead-acid batteries, thinking U235 is the only fissile fuel source for nuclear.... Christ. Pretty embarrassing for an "energy expert".

10mintwo a helluva lot of what this guy says is still correct. The main issue holding back electric cars is fuel/power storage. This is a similar issue for photovoltaics. The pursuit of power storage is now one of the main issues for Tesla, Samsung etc. Whoever makes the breakthrough, wins the race.

I don't think so. he didn't say anything about the second point, and as to the first point....not really. even the baseline model 3 from tesla has a 230 mile range.

Yes, the interesting part of the video is that it is a crossection of popular beliefs in the energy community in 2008 and how some things proved wrong. Really glad to see that they were wrong about electric cars, cars driving slower is moving backwards in progress.
