I remember asking my mom if I could see it. She said no several times but eventually gave in. My friends and I sat there in the theater, scared to death! It's crazy to think that scene was an afterthought. After a test screening, Spielberg thought he could get one more scream out of it, and came up with that scene. The studio wouldn't give him anymore money, so he shot it himself in editor Verna Field's swimming pool 😅

When you see Robert Shaw as a Bond villain and then as Quint you can see his range as an actor. Every now and then a movie comes along and all of a sudden everyone is talking about it and saying hey have you seen this movie yet? That's how Jaws was. Literally everybody was talking about it. Saying you've got to go see this movie. The soundtrack is awesome too. I remember taking the universal studios tour through the lagoon where they filmed Gilligan's Island and you're riding on the tram which went through the middle of the lagoon and all the sudden boom! Up pops Jaws out of the water scaring the hell out of everybody on the tour. How cool is that!

@@RabbiSteve1 yes he was. I honestly don't think you can find any part he ever played where he wasn't good. I also feel that as an actor he should have gotten an Oscar or at least a nomination for his portrayal of Quint. When they are all together in the boat and they are drinking and Quint is telling the story about the Indianapolis and the sailors who are attacked by sharks it makes you scared and makes you glad you weren't there beautifully acted by Shaw.

Saw it the weekend it came out when I was 9. Went with my step-brothers Steve & Ed. They were one and two years older. It was at the domed Century 24 theater on Winchester blvd in San Jose Ca. The first matinee was sold out, so we got tickets for the next show. They set up the velvet rope to one side of lobby and we sat on the floor behind it just outside the doors to the auditorium. We sat out there while the entire movie played inside for that audience. I had never heard screams at a movie like that before. When it was our turn to go in we already knew where the best seats were. We were not disappointed. Truly an adventure that I can still picture in my mind today. Thanks Dan! Cheers!

Very thorough, Dan. I'm glad you mentioned the first production meeting where the first question asked was literally, Who do we know with a trained Great White Shark? Two things I'd like to add. In regards to the Universal Hollywood Backlot Tour the original Jaws animatronic was one of the last shark bodies cast from the original mold that made the movie shark. Also, along with the screen used Orca you could have also seen the screen used "Ben Gardner's boat" until it too rotted away from a lack of maintenance and it was tossed in the trash in 2005. It was the last screen used Jaws prop on display at Universal Hollywood until then.

Quint's fighting chair would be great to put in a living room to just sit on it to watch TV. You can spin around and give people in the room guff.

I was 12 when this came out and the week after my parents and I saw it…off to Myrtle Beach. I don’t think I got within 50 feet of the water. And neither did a lot of people that were there. Phenomenal movie. My parents and I were actually at Sea World, Orlando in either ‘82 or ‘83 while they were there filming Jaws 3D. How cool is that? I’ll look for all the pictures I took and send them to you if I can locate them. Another master class on making a KZbin video Dan. You craft these with a lot of care. Thank you!

Loving this Dan! Thanks! Pausing it because having seen the movie so many times, I think Quint's line at the community meeting was actually more like "little shaking (as opposed to chewing), "little tenderizing, and down you go". Something to that effect. Excellent movie...scared the crap out of me. I was 14 years old when the movie came out and my dad wanted to see it with me. So we did. Then, that summer, we went to South Padre Island, stayed at the beach for a week, and went fishing with my mother and sister. He hooked a huge stingray, brought it in, gaffed it, and the blood in the water attracted a tiger shark at least 10 feet long. My mother and sister wanted to get back to land. The shark was more than half the size of our boat, gorgeous, and swimming around the boat. My dad wanted to catch it. He took us back to shore to get bigger rods. My mother and sister wanted nothing to do with it, nor did I, but he was willing to go out himself if necessary (Army Airborne, gung-ho, all that stuff). Anyway, I didn't want him going out by himself, and he and I went back out and thankfully...no shark. A summer vacation I will never forget. And now I will watch the rest of the video. Oh yeah, one more thing about our beach vacation. My sister and I were snorkeling, and I actually got scraped in the chest by a baby tiger shark (I think I scared it as much as it scared me), about 3 feet long. I was bleeding from my chest and thinking that if there's a baby then maybe angry big mama is nearby, so I came up, yelled to my sister to get out of the water, and we hauled butt. I agree with you the casting for this film was brilliant!

One of my favourite films of all time, with the greatest opening scene of all time. It's so scary and impactful. I tried watching Jaws without watching the opening scene, and it's like watching an intirely different film. The opening scene really sets the tone for the rest of the film, and not seeing the shark, makes it even better. The whole cast are fantastic, and John Williams score is so creepy and iconic, and just perfect to let you know the shark is coming.

Shaw's treatment of Dryfus is probably what made Scheider behave a little more fraternal toward him. You could see the two characters were bonding whereas there was this tension between the two shark experts. It created this claustrophobic atmosphere in the big ocean.

Dan this is my favorite video of yours so far. My parents had split up in 1975 & my Mom went to see Jaws with her friend Connie & when Dad picked me up for the weekend, she told him, he was NOT allowed to take me to see Jaws (Dad & I loved going to the movies) so of course we went to see Jaws. It scared Dad but I loved it. I was already completely fascinated by sharks It was back in the day of 35mm film & out local theater was still just 1 screen & everything was giant, like Imax nowadays. (We need a time machine)

The summer the film came out we went and found a line going around the block a couple of times, in Denver. Decided to go see _Hell House_ at a nearby theatre 😢 Finally saw it on TV, and while it was darn good, as a SCUBA diver myself I found it fairly humorous. Shaw definitely stole the show. 👍

As usual, you made a great video about a film my parents wouldn't let me see. To this day, I've never seen Jaws in its entirety. Why? We were a sailing family & my dad wasn't going to have me afraid of the water because of a shark movie. I'm serious. & he wasn't wrong in doing it. When we had friends go sailing with us during the Shark Craze due to the movie, many were terrified to go far out in the water, fearing a shark attack! I was puzzled by their fear, not having seen the movie. They were genuinely scared to death. I thought it was ridiculous, watching them literally squirm as we went out deep into the ocean. Keep up the good work, Dan! I look forward to more!

I remember watching an entertainment program back in 1975 talking about "JAWS" (I was 10) and hearing a snippet of the classic theme music. For some reason I remarked to myself that it sounded like classic Godzilla movie music. I think the first time I ever saw "JAWS" was on a network TV broadcast. I remember thinking that showing the one victim's severed leg floating to the sea bottom was a pretty bold move by the network to show something so graphic on TV in the mid-70s. I later enjoyed the movie many times on HBO in 1979-81, and enjoyed "JAWS 2" as well. I was on temporary duty in Panama (at the former Howard Air Force Base) in the mid-80s when I was in the Air Force. The TV service at the hotel I was billeted at in downtown Panama City had a channel (Channel 9) that showed American movies 24-7. Every couple weeks they'd change their movie rotation. I think "JAWS" was one of the films they showed and I watched it several times as the movies rotation repeated many times... drinking can after can of Olympia beer, the cheapest I could buy on base. Shortly before this, I also remember watching "JAWS 3D" at the (non-3D) base theater at Pope AFB, NC, my duty station at the time. I don't know if the movie would've been any better if I HAD seen it in 3D. A *BIG* "JAWS" memory was when my wife and I spent our honeymoon on Martha's Vineyard in July 1990. We enjoyed the waters at State Beach where the 4th of July Weekend beach scenes were filmed. We also saw Gay Head lighthouse seen during a particular scene in the film. We have photos of both in our honeymoon photo album.

Several decades after the film's release, Lee Fierro walked into a seafood restaurant and noticed an "Alex Kintner Sandwich" on the menu. She commented that she had played his mother many years ago. Jeffrey Voorhees, manager of the restaurant, ran out to meet her. He had played her son, and they hadn't seen each other since the original movie shoot. ~ Per: IMDb

One good thing about movies, I get it the Orca is gone and that's a shame, but it still lives on on celluloid (Bluray, DVD, et al). That's why digital cameras are one of my favorite inventions. More pictures have probably been taken since they hit the market than the 150 odd years before then when people had to economize how many pictures they took because rolls of film only had so many shots.

When I was a kid. my brother took me to see this film. To this day I remember where in the theater-long gone now-I was sitting. The woman who showered everyone around her with her popcorn when the head popped out. The intense scene with Quint talking about his youth. I have listen to the soundtrack very often. Even have the expanded score. I do have a good collection of books and toys from the fim. Nowhere near like that one guy!lol One of those films when your channel hoping and you see it you will stop. Dan you are like me in that we grew up when all the shows you talk about rewrote film fans joy of watching and collecting these blockbuster shows, props and items out there.
