When I was a kid I worked a few gigs as the stage monitor mixer - the bands would look over at me and mime some hand signals that I completely didn’t understand. I would reach over and pretend to adjust something then look back and hope I got a thumbs up. Never could tell if thumbs up was for louder or that’s cool.

Thumbs up means louder, the ok sing means “that’s cool”. It sounds like you weren’t a very good “stage sound mixer”, basically because you don’t even know that’s called a monitorist.

Not as many Monitor Guys (people/monitorists) now. Depends how big the show is or how much money thrown at production. Just one sound guy (people/sound engineer) to do it all now foh and mons.

Yo Dawg!! I heard you like a volume pedal, so I put a volume pedal on your volume pedal that goes out to your volume pedal. Then I put another volume pedal on that volume pedal so you can control the volume of the other pedals you're using as a volume pedal. I then put 7 volume pedals together to control the monitor volume, using a volume pedal. It's all pretty simple really.

Controlling your own monitor levels live. With individual monitors. Drummers started this after vocalists with their own monitors. What a brilliant concept. Especially in today's BASS DRIVEN SUB frequency NIGHTMARE. I mixed live sound and put 95% of my efforts into live monitor mixes on stage for the muscians. And, the musciians loved me for it. I made them all play INSIDE their BUBBLE of PERFECT sound.

Man, I wish I had a setup like that back in the day. In my experience with musicians, we all want to be louder. If I had a way to turn down the drums and the other guitar player I may have played in the band a little longer. My band was so loud it became unenjoyable to me a lot of times. They were though, some of the best times I’ve ever had!

So I get the concept, the simplicity during the set. Pretty ingenious. I'm guessing sound guys love this. But isn't it more of a pain in the butt to set up? I wish they had gone into more detail of the (literal) ins and outs of these monitor volume pedals. Anyone care to explain the lines in for such a set up? Does it come from the board, or are they all directly from each player?

I'm a metal/rock player who has zero interest in this band's music, but anybody who's ever played live will tell you that volume pedal setup is probably the most practical "guitar player solution" for monitoring that's possible. Wow. Get ready to see a lot more guitar players doing this.

This is an okay start. But I need to be able to pan my fellow band members, so I have a stereo volume pedal for each of them set up as panners. Then, I like to control basic EQ, nothing fancy, just bass, mids and treble, so that's another three modded volume pedals per colleague. I wish I could have volume pedals so I could control everyone's FX Aux, but they told me there was no more room on stage for all the volume pedals, so I'm working on an iPhone app for that. I'll mix and master our next album with my feet, btw. It'll be exclusively distributed by Zappo's.

It's not " the most unreliable volume pedal design ever". I've had mine going on 14 years and bought it used from a pawnshop and haven't had a problem out of it yet. And I used it constantly and always have my foot on it riding my level and doing long ambient swells. On another note he probably uses it cause it has a real pot and a smooth even accurate sweep. Unlike other VPs that tend to be nothing for the first half and then all at once your maxed out. I've tried almost all of em and have to say the EB(notEBJr.) is one of the best. He's a serious VP player and could have anything he wanted and has probably tried em all and that's the one he chose. That says a lot about the pedal.
