Here's the next episode of Three-For-All with 3 Jimmy Herring Licks From 1998. As I mention in the video, I did feature Jimmy in a Three-For-All lesson in 2019, which was focused on some ideas from his days playing with The Aquarium Rescue Unit, while this lesson focuses on some ideas during his stint playing with the mighty Jazz Is Dead.
The licks in this lesson come from a bootleg from 1998 featuring Jazz Is Dead on their maiden voyage tour, which included drum legend Billy Cobham behind the kit, along with T Lavitz on keys and Alphonzo Johnson on bass, as Jimmy held the guitar position for the group. Their take on updating/jamming an assortment of classic music by The Grateful Dead is beyond inspiring. While I respect The Dead, it wasn't until I heard Jazz Is Dead that I actually understood how good their music actually was, and it converted my original opinion on their music in a new and respectful way. In other words, I didn't really "get it" until I heard Herring & Co. playing their music - then I finally "got it."
The ideas in this lesson include some of Jimmy's signature melodic phrasing, along with a few wicked legato phrases that have become his trademark. You'll also find plenty of emotive string bending and vibrato moves along with Herring's signature jazz-rock stamp during all of these phrases and ideas.
I've learned a lot from studying Jimmy's phenomenal playing and while the ideas shared here are only a small sample of his gifted fretboard skill, they should serve as a springboard to help you uncover more of his playing style and secrets, not to mention exposing those that are unfamiliar with his name or music during this episode. There are some great ideas at play here, so even if you're new to his music, you should find plenty to sink your teeth into and explore in this lesson.
