A Plymouth community that has been gripped by fear since the discovery of a Second World War bomb four days ago has breathed a collective sigh of relief following its safe detonation at sea. The unexploded device was found in a garden on St Michael Avenue in Keyham on Tuesday, February 20.
It resulted in what has been described by the Ministry of Defence (MOD) as one of the largest evacuation operations since the end of World War Two. The bomb was successfully detonated yesterday evening, February 23.
Huge praise and admiration have been given to the Royal Navy by Plymouth residents and officials and their bravery has been commended on X, formerly Twitter.

@@maureenwood2752 In 1977 the queen passed through our town while we all stood and waved, everyone was out waiting for the big moment. I was about 8 years old and while everyone was looking up the road I suddenly turned round to see some bloke, maybe in his 30s or 40s in a long black leather jacket carrying a heavy looking holdall walking past us all on the pavement. Even as a kid I thought BURGLER ! He just didnt look right. Bet that bag was full of stolen goods. Twat.

I do get pi**ed off when anyone reporting anything is ALWAYS saying" you know" OR " like" halfway through a sentence ....surely our language has sufficient words to use for the right occasion and is more PROFESSIONAL. She was more concerned about hitting her target!

From the North East. Seems like all the Agencies involved were very well coordinated and integrated. Those Military types who approach such a situation never cease to amaze me….most people in their occupation can make a mistake….those guys and gals cannot. Pleased it all ended well.

While I am 400 plus miles away, appreciate Plymouth has a rich history. Despite the risk, danger and hardship…this bomb episode adds another chapter to Plymouth’s story. Regards from a not so sunny Sunderland.

Numerous German bombs found on sites near us and in the Grand Union Canal. Street blocked off and all sorted within a few hours. We get blown to bit by Irish t.errorists and I go through a display cabinet smothered in glass. All back to normal the next day. Talk about " make a meal of things "..... I dread to think what will happen when real emergencies hit us.

I just LOVE how the two servicemen driving the lorry ( with the bomb on it) have put their seat belts on. They'll be glad of them if they have an accident and that bomb goes off... "Phew that was close" they'll think "Glad we were buckled up nice 'n' safe...."
