Each instrumentalist/composer left an imprint in the violin repertoire whether Paganini, Wieniawski, Vieuxtemps, Sarasate, Ysaye, Sauret, Dont, Joachim, Heifetz, yo name a few. From these, only Paganini, Wieniawski, Sauret & Dont produced their own Caprices or Etudes or Studies that have been used until present day for the development of a worthy violinist. As a side note, Wieniawski’s studies are just as difficult as Paganini’s, and you can quote me on it !!!

Comparisons between Wieniawski and Paganini are of course inevitable but in truth the two men were wholly different as musicians and also moved in different circles that made different demands upon them as artists. Wieniawski's compositions do show perhaps a little better integration of melodic themes and virtuoso effects but he was able to build upon techniques and ideas pioneered by Paganini. When Paganini composed it was to showcase those techniques so of course they were employed more overtly. Wieniawski as a youth was able to travel to Paris and rub shoulders with the likes of Chopin whereas the young Paganini had to endure the Napoleonic wars which made travel almost impossible. Wieniawski does come across as the better composer of the two but he had far better opportunities at the start of his career. He would always have been a fine composer but he would not have been the violinist he was without the innovations in violin playing laid down by Paganini.

So even though Wieniawski showed better compositions and equally astonishig technique it was all already done some 30 -40.years vefore him..

My grandfather studied at the Warsaw Conservatory with Mieczysław Michałowski, who was a student of Wieniawski's. Michałowski had one other student at the time - Bronisław Huberman, who became one of the top violinists of the 20th century. According to family lore, Michałowski declared that of the two of them, my grandfather was the more talented. Unfortunately, he decided that music was too unstable a career for a family man, started a business, which failed, and died in 1935, thus avoiding being killed by the Nazis.

No point in comparing Paganini and Wieniawski. Their character cannot be separated from their performing ability and style. Paganini was a total egoist as well as a supernatural wizard with the violin. Wieniawski's technique might also have been astonishing, but his human nature seems to have been perfectly normal. It's rather like trying to compare Liszt and Chopin; you just can't. Their aims are so different.

But one thing you do have to realize is that Roman's compositions are decorations of the original songs, it's more like he adds cadenza to make it seems trickier. In contrast, Wieniawski's composition was all done by himself so he's is right at some point that "modern violinist can't compare to him since no violinist nowadays can compose." if you're comparing the originality of the song.

Paganini was one of the greatest virtuosi and an innovator first of all.I see completely ignorant people commenting... bullshit. But, have any of them played the Sauret cadenza (which is by far more difficult than the actual concerto, compositions and transcription by Ernst or Lipinski? Did any of them played the Wieniawski etudes? So, bottom line, Paganini is great because he introduced all the innovations for the virtuosi i have mentioned to expand the limits of violin technique.... but this doesn't make him greater as a player/virtuoso than Wieniawski, Sarasate, Sauret or Heifetz. But most people ONLY know Paganini and easily make poor judgments. As the same as for Tesla and Thomas Edison for example....

Do Not compare apples and oranges. The polish are so preoccupied with their national identity, so a boy named Henrich who spends most of his life with other polish emigres like Mitzkevitch in Paris are still called patriots. While talking about him we constantly hear how Polish he was, on the other hand , when talking about Paganini we talk about his virtuosity.

My opinion is, that Paganini was the better composer. Who of them played better the "wretched wood case", I don't know. Wieniawski's music is more or less salon music, pure show pieces. Paganini was not a composer of the quality of Schubert or Beethoven, but in his time a good composer. The great violin composer at his time was Louis Spohr, who is not very known in our days. The great violin composer of Wieniawski's time was Vieuxtemps, who made a few salon pieces too, but with his violin concertos he made some great violin compositions of the rate of Berlioz' compositions. Here the best Wieniawski concerto recordings I know: Concerto No.1 Michael Rabin: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6DWhKKQg6uLY7s Concerto No.2 Michael Rabin: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jYq6pHZma9GNpdk And for comparision a nowadays nearly unknown concerto of a contemporary on the level of Mendelssohn or Schumann: Alexei Lvov violin concerto A-minor in form of a vocal scene: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jYq6pHZma9GNpdk with the great Sergei Stadler! Written also in form of a vocal scene is the No. 8 of Louis Spohr, but it is written in 1816, (the year of Beethoven's Opus 98 An die ferne Geliebte - Liederkreis and the time of the composition of Paganini's first violin concerto!): kzbin.info/www/bejne/jnK1o5-BodF_l5Y

This is where the mistake lies: Music and the way you perceive it is entirely "subjective"... there is no possible way to determine who is ever "Best" ... you can compare the crowds that show up, the applause, record sales, whatever, but there is absolutely no way to tell someone that a particular player is "The best in the world" .... That is like Saying Eddie Van Halen is "Better" that Jimi Hendrix. Well, they both turned the corner on rock and roll, in that they were both great innovators. You could say that Yngwie Malmsteen is "the best" when in fact he is just extremely technical in his style... "creative' not so much. Leave the creativity for composers like Steve Vai. The same applies to any great musician in any field of music. This also applies to artists and artwork. The beauty and love is entirely in the eye or ear of the beholder. What people really need to try to comprehend is "Subjectivity".... and stop using the word "Genius" as it does not apply to music or art. Impressive, yes. Popular, yes. Renowned, yes. The "Best?".. no. Not even Paginini. Think of all of the artists and musicians who have had no desire to be exposed to the public eye. People would be confounded to listen to ten different Paginini's. You could come up with "most well-received" or "most popular" but never, ever, ever... the "Best" ...there is always someone perceived to be "Better"

No doubt he was a great virtuoso, as in those days the judges of such were far more critical than they are today. But to say, or even ask the question is both juvenile and ludicrous. Henryk never did command the staggering prices of his concert fares for the obvious reason he wasn't a unique performer. And neither did Henryk's compositions posses that spellbinding, shadowy, outline in which aside from his incredible virtuosity Paganini's works were known for. The difference is, one is a timeless legend, and the other is hardly even known.

Alas the world of the classical music has started to compare with old masters like rock'n roll fans. And there is no end of all stupid arguments. Rock is suffering with who's the best guitarist ever. Please don't do that.

The first is undoubtedly the best......Anyone imitating or simulating Paganini, is obviously second best...Without hesitation, a weaker version of the original master....

Have you ever heard any Wieniawski compositions and you claim that he imitated Paganini? Or any "second best" like Sarasate, Sauret did they also imitated Paganini, seriously??

Why, oh why, do people insist on comparing virtuosi who died before any of us were born, AND, were never recorded since no recording technology existed during their lifetimes? Therefore, it's obvious, isn't it? NO ONE alive during our lifetimes has EVER heard either Paganini or Wieniawski play. I find the arguments in this list of comments to be totally specious and stupid! I WILL agree with anyone who considers Heifetz the greatest of all time. I can't comment on Paganini or Wieniawski. The whole comparison exercise seems ludicrous to me.
