Nick, I cried right along with you, so please don't feel bad. Mike Baker was my best friend and soulmate and his loss devastated me. Thank you for showing SG to your followers. You made my day...❤ Glad Lex liked them, too.

Are you serious? I discovered Shadow Gallery a couple of months ago and haven't stopped listening to them since. Love these guys, and Mike Baker was awesome. Taken way too soon. This band should have been as famous as Dream Theater. My kind of music.

Yay this is great guys! Shadow Gallery is one of my favorites and like you said they're sadly very underappreciated and they were almost contemporary with Dream Theater. Tyranny is one of my all time favorite albums the whole thing is just epic and it flows so well. I kinda wished you included one of the epics like I Believe (with a surprise cameo) but the whole album is great

Great to see Nick rocking and singing along with one of most overlooked and underrated (unrated really) bands ever. Mystery was the first song I heard of these guys and then I was hooked. Haven't stopped listening to them since. Incredible music, incredible musicians, and incredible vocals from Mike Baker. Made my day knowing someone loves them as much as I do.

Thank you for this reaction! Shadow Gallery's Tyranny album is right up there with the masterpieces of the genre like Operation:Mindcrime and Scenes From a Memory. 99.9 percentile stuff. Wish more people were aware of their brilliance. A fantastic concept album that stands the test of time. Still gives me chills.

In 2010 I was 17 and very into Shadow Gallery. I found out the day before they were doing their first concert ever 2 hours away from me. I gave my dad everything I had in savings to take off work the next and drive my friend and I there. It was a special experience I feel blessed to have. I even lucked out and went to their Digital Ghost release party as well. Wonderful group of guys.

So is Echolyn Nick and Lex they are mind boggling Prog. As The World(1995) every song is a masterpiece but if you dare to play The Cheese Stands Alone you will be blown away. Echolyn never plays Metal.
@mvunit33 жыл бұрын
@@shyshift - You know what, I bought a used CD at a Warehouse Music Store that was close to my home at that time (for 99 cents!). I bought that album with the original cover as a Blind Purchase, I put it on, and I guess I wasn't "ready" yet? Just like almost a decade later, The Gathering - "If_then_else", it sat on my shelf for a couple of years. But I then pulled it out and really listened, and it struck me that they were a modern version of Gentle Giant! Years later, I was around MANY who LOVED Echolyn, on a Progressive Rock/Prog Metal internet station (and live chatboard) called Progulus dot com, where I found MANY folks knew the obscure bands I enjoyed :). The "Mei" album was also a big deal when it came out. As the World is like a full album of tracks that relate to the topic of Porcupine Tree's "The Sound of Muzak", only many years before!

Great choice. I first heard this band on the radio back in '95 and picked up their amazing Carved In Stone release shortly thereafter. Their guitarist/keyboardist Gary Wherkamp performed in another phenomenal group called Amaran's Plight (on their only release Voice In The Light). Highly recommend you check out Shattered Dreams.

They formed in Allentown, PA in 1985....every album is a work of audio art. The lead singer (Mike Baker) on this album died in 2008. His replacement is Brian Ashland, who performed on their latest album. Odd note, they never performed live or did a video until this last album (Digital Ghosts)in 2010 because they all had day jobs and families. Just for fun, here's a video of a track from the album before Tyranny - "Carved in Stone", also recorded in 2010 with Brian Ashland: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m5fanH2ui62Ub7c

All of their albums are fantastic. You cannot err with any of them. (Digital Ghost is a little bit weaker, but only because of the lack of Mike's vocals; the new singer is not bad, but doesn't mach as perfect as Mike had.) If I were you, I would start with Room V, then Legacy, followed by their first album, Shadow Gallery.

You should really listen to Amaran's Plight - Voice in the Light (The album is a concept album played by various members of the prog genre). The track Shattered Dreams is freaking awesome! Members include: D.C. Cooper (Royal Hunt, Silent Force) - Lead Vocals / Gary Wehrkamp (Shadow Gallery) - Guitars & Keyboards / Kurt Barabas (Under the Sun) - Bass / Nick D’Virgilio (Spock's Beard) - Drums.

Cool band, reminds me of older Symphony X. I remember going into music chat rooms on Yahoo messenger and a.o.l. chatting about music and guitars with strangers. I've heard newer songs from this band, but their new singer is kind of a screamer. I love this guys voice so much more. I have a DVD of Gigantor tour with them, Dream Theater, Megadeth and other prog metal bands.
@zoltandemeter9193 жыл бұрын
I think, it has much more common with Dream Theater, but more of Rush, than Metallica influences, and a more balladistic version of them. In fact SG writes better ballads with more emotional immersion. Maybe they don't have as high peaks in their discography, as their more famous brother, but the level of their production is more even.

Ufff Shadow Gallery, quizás la banda más subvalorada del Metal Progresivo, que joyas de discos sacaron en los 90s y 00s. Recomiendo su canción "Colors" o "The Andromeda Strain".

Shadow Gallery really is an underestimated band. But there is one quite simple reason: they never played live until 2010. Your selection contains 2 of the most typical "ingredients" of Shadow Gallery music: the Prog-metal with heavy guitars on one hand and beautiful melodies on the other. I first heard of Shadow Gallery in 2005 beeing part of my monthly eclipsed sampler of new music; they just had the released Room V, the follow up story to Tyranny. Great album but the last with Mike Baker. Most of Shadow Gallery's music is written by Gary Wehrkamp, who was also part of AYREON's Universal Migrator (you remember AYREON ? and the second reaction video from this album?) :-))))))) Mike Baker also sang one song for AYREON's Human Equation - Day 16 - Loser, one of a few rock songs that I know, which contain a Didgeridoo;great song, also played on AYREON'S Universe Live DVD. Also Shadow Gallery's Legacy album is great, but with the new singer after 2010 I lost interest. Talking about NuMetal, most of it I didn't like too much, but the beginnings of Linkin Park were good and I also like System of a Down ... sometimes music from another planet :-) I'm wondering, how you'll gonna start this genre

Shadow Gallery was a band that was in the CD Wallet of the late-great "Chuck Schuldiner" of DEATH (which his manager Eric Greif showed on his Fb page), including "Control and Resistance" from Watchtower. Bands like these would also inspire him to leave Death Metal behind and create the Tech-Prog Metal band "Control Denied" before his death (due to Brain Cancer). Again Nick, I hope you have been enjoying the Playlists I sent you (Melodious Progulus series - also see below in the reply) because this track also represents a lot of the Progressive Rock/Prog Metal that is on each part, along with the contemporary bands. Magna Carta was a great source for me to learn about new bands at the time (Enchant, Magellan, Lemur Voice, Cairo, Steve Walsh etc.). Sadly we all lost the vocalist Mike Baker in 2008 (edit: Oh! Nick said it). One of his last recordings was his contribution to Ayreon's "Human Equation" album. InsideOUT music has seemed to pick up the mantle for new bands as well (and some from Magna Carta). . . . You may be tearing-up Nick all the way through if you hear my playlists :').
