Marie - the growling is essential to the song. APEX is a concept album telling a story. He is the voice of the monster that is imprisoned in the mountain. Brittney is the person summoned to set him free.

Sorry, this is incorrect. The growl is the voice the of the person summoning the entity in the mountain. It says "Come to me, awakening. Follow my voice, come to me". Brittney is the voice of that entity, as well as the story-teller. She even tells the story in an interview, that there is an entity which is timeless, immortal and all powerful, who gets awoken from time to time, by various people throughout the ages, to do their bidding, and has no choice but to obey them. The second verse is: "My path begins with the new dawn; a voice is calling my name, It always starts as whispering then manifests to a scream. I'm drawn to the creature that wakes me, bound to them by the curse. My soul exists only to serve, a covenant of birth". Clearly, that's the voice of the entity in the mountain.

The "cookie monster" vocals are a perfect fit -- and I, on the other hand, call those kinds of vocals "beauty and the beast" vocals, because of the light vs dark dichotomy.

i agree and it wasn´t even that deep. I don´t like the really deep growls, like Marc "Xenoyr" Campbell from Ne Oblivicaris is doing them. But when he sings together with Tim Charles i don´t even have a problem with it. Only when he sings alone, then i don´t like it.

The whole album is a concept, with each song representing a chapter. In this one, the evil sorcerer awakens The Immortal and forces her to do the dirty work.

Slight correction, the story is about 'The Immortal' who is being summoned from the mountain by the Sorcerer (or in this case, the Matriarch). The growls in this case are meant to represent the Matriarch, while Brittney plays the part of the Immortal.

Canada represent!, From my hometown of Vancouver too. Great reaction guys and yeah I'm a headbanger and the growling/scream has never really been tops on my list but I do listen to it and if you really want to know it does take incredible talent and stamina to do it, People think it's easy to just "scream" but the way they do it is not.

Excellent reaction! For decades, I too, was put off by the "Cookie Monster" style. And I've played guitar in metal bands (but mostly classic hard rock). But I have to admit, I've been sort of acquiring an ear for it over the last couple of years, especially when it's done tastefully. This song is a perfect example. Brittany is portraying a character in the context of the song. The guitarist is portraying another who is speaking to Brittany's character. When you think of it that way, it kind of works.

i wasn't a fan of the cookie monster(as you call it) until i listened to Jinjer whose female lead can sing as well as Britnney Slays (Unleash The Archers) but can also do the rough voice as well.

15:10 something comparable? Check out Ad Infinitum - Chapter I: Monarchy album that was just released. Singer Melissa Bonny had a great clean singing voice, yet can also do the cookie monster vocals (mainly sings clean in Ad Infinitum).

why have growls alongside clean vocals? for contrast obviously... Especially if there is a lyrical contrast as well. I'm not huge into bands that only have growls, because after a while it starts to grate on me. Having cleans contrasting with growls I often like very much because of the contrast (also one of the reasons I really like Jinjer). Also minor niggle, doing growls healthily takes a whole lot of talent and is most definitely a singing technique. Like I said I am not huge fan of growls either, but I will always acknowledge the time and effort and talents it takes to pull them off well, because it is by no means easy.
