This reminded me of the mother of a former friend, she had a promising future as a lawyer but when she got married her husband asked her to leave her job and take care of the house and the children. At first everything was pretty good, but over the years he distanced himself and finally she was left alone with the children, without a job, while he abandoned them for another woman. She and the kids suffered a lot from this. Now she managed to recover a little from that bad situation but so many wasted years affected her in many ways 😕
@앋이나2 жыл бұрын
yup, i seen someone like that too. cuz of these kind othings, here's what my mom said/taught, if your husband/wife (or just anyone in your relationship) says its better for only them to work and support the family, insist on you needing to work. at least in a situation where they died and no one cares for you and your children or maybe being abonded by them, you still can find others way to manage. its just that poeple have change of hearts so quickly that you sometimes just never even realized it until it hits you rock bottom. even worse, if they're blinded by greed. luckily, i've never had to go through it yet but seeing how others are affected around me, it really makes me scared of getting married (not that i dont want to, but im scared)
@mariapaulas1992 жыл бұрын
@@앋이나 I think as long as you keep in mind that marriage is about being a team of two self-sufficient people, you'll be fine. It is important for the couple to be on the same page as neither of them should make the other leave their education or their job without looking for alternatives. We also have to consider that today a single person (the husband, generally) cannot support an entire family with a single job, and if he loses his job or he gets sick, it's better to have other sources of income. So yeah, the future is too uncertain to leave your life in the hands of your partner to whom anything could happen or as you say, have a change of heart and look for another person and they leave you alone.

@@mariapaulas199 In my family we have to follow traditional standards. The wife has her roles, the husband has his roles. It is expected of a wife to take care of the cooking, cleaning, and be a mother to her kids. The husband is expect to get a job and take care of all the wife's finances. Those who don't follow the rules get shamed and are looked at as an embarrassed in their family. The people here really care about their reputation. However the issue is that there are a lot of restrictions to being a tradition wife. Your advice has helped me move away from tradition marriages. Due to what I've seen happen in other married couples lives and my parents life, I honestly always see wifes have their lives screwed up because they relied on their man financially.

@@MJ-ip7hs I think the mistake in following 'traditional standards' so strictly in marriages is that they are not really set up to be sustainable.There are many variations in what can go wrong and no ways to contain those who are affected, not from the government, nor from one's own close family, instead there is humiliation and it is almost always the wives and children the most affected when something goes wrong. I hope you can continue a life full of good times if you form a family, with someone who respects and supports you.

I feel seen lol. My boyfriend wasn't rich and wasn't supporting me financially, but he was weirdly controlling, without seeming mean, he said it would make him happy if I spent all my time in his room, if I stopped all my hobbies, if I stopped seeing my friends, etc. I wasn't into it, but he said it was really important for his happiness, so eventually I went from having a full life to just trying to appease him. I understand that the entire movie is a big metaphor yet I can't stop thinking about how she went to the bathroom, bath, how she even eat there? Probably it doesn't have to make sense... but girl when you husband puts you on a shelf with his trophies it's not even a red flag is ''run away and don't look back, the guy is a psycho'' alert. Also true yet bittersweet how this movie shows how an abuser doesn't select X woman and converts her into a victim, they have like a sixht sense for mental weaknes and insecurities and some women can become their own victimizer even after escaping their abuser which sadly happened her. Very sad ending, but I like it this way because in real-life a victim of such level of mental abuse and manipulation not only from her husband but her mother will not recover that quickly and certainly not without mental scars. Even after achieving success with her own talent and becoming a businesswoman, a self verification that she is not only good to be on display she still sits on that shelf as a trophy of her own, and maybe it's digging too deep but that shelf may also represent the mental damage of still wanting the validation and praise of others and how now she is unable to be part of a healthy relationship or even afraid to start one, therefore, she creates that distance between her and the rest of the people.

I would try it, like she did, flattered at first ("you want me to meet your boss? That's great!") then to just keep the peace ("Oh, you want me to meet your boss, but NOT talk about business...I see, gotcha). But, eventually, all of my pent up expletives would tumble out of my mouth like "word vomit" and I'd be done. It comes from being told you're stupid as a kid. Never even imply that to your daughters (in particular), folks. If they do something dumb, tell them they DID something dumb...and are too intelligent, too good to do things like that. Look at the average female celebrity who preach female empowerment, they shout feminist words while still acting like a barbie object overly showing their bodies in music videos... It's like they want to impress both sides of society and think they're fooling people as much as they're fooling themselves. They want to be seen as the perfect beauty and be admired at the same time for being a strong woman, not both at the same time like the woman in the movie said, they want to be seen as both to different kinds of people, that's why it's easy for them to say one thing then contradict it with their actions the next. They want to be both Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Pamela Anderson. And no i'm not a feminist calling them out, i just find them annoyingly ironic.

Crazy that people can’t enjoy a story without tearing holes in it when it wasn’t even trying to cover those holes in the first place. Also crazy how people think this movie is anti women? It’s supposed to make you think about how women see themselves and their role in the world and subsequently how we spend our life or even let people treat us as a result. Not to mention a great commentary on how we let the values of our loved ones influence our world view. Not everything needs to have a happy ending or work within the rules of the world we live in.

So in the end she actually never changed. I mean nothing wrong with using her beauty for opportunities as long as she is happy. She was happy with being beautiful in fashion until she was not and then married. She was happy being married until she wasn’t and then she left and opened makeup store where she was again being admired for her looks and happy.

This movie is one of 30 short stories "Roar" by Cecelia Ahern. She is a great young Irish writer I like her sense of humor. Wicked and intelligent book. Yes, the book is about women. All stories are metaphors and symbolic. Recommend to read the book.

This hits home. Growing up and even now, I saw so many girls around me get married (and eventually divorced) without working on themselves beyond their appearance. They became trophy wives and it was a superficially glamorous lifestyle that masked the deeper pain of being objectified and dehumanized.

wow... so many lessons, real life lessons, in that video.. How the messages parents give can lead to the downfall of a child, what a person who is trapped in a controlling relationship goes through, the struggles to get free, and the self-doubt that they typically retain even after achieving great success and struggle with for the rest of their life- the imposter syndrome so to speak that they end up struggling with.

This movie also shows what true feminism is all about. Women can't wait around for men to change, they need to be the change they want to see in the world - first! My mom and nena came from very poor families, but that didn't stop them from taking care of themselves. They didn't need tons of makeup or expensive clothes to look beautiful, it didn't matter how hard the world was on them, they always found a reason to smile and laugh. I wouldn't be the man I'm today without those strong and gorgeous women. And now that I'm raising two precious daughters, changing the planet into a better place for us all is the only thing I really want in life.
@arshameghtedary3442 жыл бұрын
there was no feminism in this movie except the stupid idea of feminists always blame men, She was a weak person and even when she did realize she can be much more than a beautiful doll she chose the same path again! i believe this movies shows what is wrong with 80% of women!

@@arshameghtedary344 always blame men? There is literally an abusive man in this movie that treats her as an object and puts her on a 'shelf'. It's not her fault that he is terrible, it's his. Feminism is needed because of these sexist double standard. Just like when a rich old guy dates a young woman, everybody calls her an evil gold digger but nobody has a problem with him buying people with money. 🙄
@jonas33332 жыл бұрын
@@AngelDeed I don't think he's being abusive. He's just being himself. He can afford a beautiful woman to dote upon until he tires of it. It goes both ways. I've seen many a relationship where the man truly loved the woman and nothing would make her happy. It's not his fault she's nothing but a trophy wife, it's her mother's. Her mother trained her to value beauty over everything else. And there are plenty of cougars out there paying young men to "escort" them around. They call them an evil gold-diggers because that's all they(male OR female) care about. That's all that type EVER cares about. Why else would they date/marry that older person?

This is a movie about the road (and pitfalls) to self actualization, not abuse or even particularly about beauty culture. Rich white women problems are very cliche because Hollywood likes to write about them (no surprise, they’re very familiar with them) but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist. Frankly, some days I prefer to watch a colorful movie with Danial Day Kim acting while being hot with a decently attractive lead actress playing rich people saying basic things like ‘don’t forget to pursue and ask for the things that you need from your loved ones while you try your best to make them happy too’ than a gritty look at the terrible realities of poor indigenous or immigrant women. If you think about it, the depiction was very realistic. No one wakes up one day and turns their entire life around and becomes a perfect being within a year. She’s doing better, she’s no longer lying to her husband (and herself) about what makes her happy, which is very good considering where she’s coming from. Hopefully one day she won’t be on the shelf, but she’s trying and that’s all any of us can do.

Kinda sad ending, but not totally doomed. The new shelf shows how Amelia is now using herself as symbol of empowerment, instead of a trophy. But it is still a shelf focused on her beauty because the message is that awareness doesnt happen overnight. The effects of misogyny takes a long time to remove. But she will keep in evolving. She didnt like how the people in the store admire her looks but ignore what she has to say, so she will keep in changing that. Perhaps, someday, without havibg to put herself on a shelf (a metaphor on putting beauty above all else).

Not really. The expression "putting someone up on a pedestal" means that you follow someone unconditionally thinking that they cannot do any wrong. It's a submissive point of view and this episode it's not about that. This episode is about treating someone like an object: putting her on display and value her just for her sheer physical appearance and nothing else.
