The reason for the high price, other than the fact that you're getting 2 routers, is that they have a second 5 GHz dedicated backhaul band. That adds cost, in fact is the main thing that adds cost to routers/APs is how many bands, how many radio chains, max channel width, etc. So when you consider what you're getting, it's not actually overpriced. And now 2 years later in early 2023, you can find these 2nd hand for as low as $100 a piece, so it's definitely a good investment.

I wonder if it makes more sense, in a mesh setup, to have the main router one expensive router and the 2nd a cheaper one. What is the point of having two powerful routers when only one off then is doing the hard work?

I have a Huawei 5G CPE WiFi router that support WiFi 6 supposedly . Not sure if this mesh will make a difference as I have a decent connection at the moment with 3 Mesh from google WiFi 1st Gen. I get 80mbps download and 30upload close to the 5ghz near the router. Throughout house mesh I get roughly 30- 50mbps at the moment. curious maybe in the future to upgrade to this. Very interesting video. 👍

With Asus, you don't have to subscribe to parental controls and security software for a monthly fee, unlike tp-link and a few other popular brands. The others are cheaper but you basically have no control over detailed settings. To me, that's easily worth the extra $50

Got my eye on these, but currently testing the Amazon Eero Pro 6 replacing the 1Gig Virgin Hub 4's wifi. Definite speed improvements testing with my S21 Ultra - some rooms went from around 400mbps to 800 with the Eero! mainly, I noticed the Hub 4 producing 400-700 speeds on average around the house, but the Eero does closer to 600-900. One thing is the 2.4ghz band speeds once I go further from the house in the garden seem to be quite crap compared to the Hub 4, getting 100-180mbps near the house (and near to the 2nd Eero) just outside in the garden, then at the back getting a measly 40-60mbps. The Hub 4 was giving me 300mbps close to the house, 200 in the middle of the garden, and a solid 100mbps right at the very back. I'm debating testing the Asus, but I've heard there are (or were) drop outs and connection problems, whereas most reports of longterm Eero Pro use as being rock solid. Either way, getting at least 1 of these wifi 6 routers seems to be a good improvement over the Hub 4 for now. Fingers crossed the Hub 5 comes soon to improve the situation, update us to Wifi 6, and finally gives a 2.5g lan port so we can actually get 1.1gbps speed instead of 940!!

Amazingly streamlined look. I'm in the states and it's still an arm and a leg, but at some point perhaps you get what you pay for... I did really love the way you described checking for Internet speed first, and then checking the ZenWiFi AX out from there. I just saw this router today -- from a distance, unfortunately as it was out of stock -- but I am seriously considering picking one up, especially since I just saw this video which you so graciously added to the web! That is, of course, unless I am blessed enough to receive one from you -- which, as a teacher and given Covid-19 and teaching "remotely," I would be ever so grateful to you for providing :) Thank you for the increase in my knowledge base!

Currently getting 10 down (did have about 25 when we moved in a year ago, not sure what happened there) and 5 up. The current killer for our house and our little BT provided ‘Smarthub’ is the fact that all walls are brick, not stud and plasterboard, so the WiFi anywhere other than the kitchen/dining room where the hub sits, the coverage is appalling

Just curious... I did not understand when you were doing the 1-3 wall speed tests and said the speeds were "crazy" - did you mean rubbish bad (I'm 56 y/o) or awesome? I have 500mbps from Virgin coming into the house and lots of brick walls. I have their powerline boosters but still have challenges upstairs (1st & 2nd floor). I am full ethernet downstairs (Ookla 500-600mbps over ethernet) but big wifi problems upstairs (Ookla 35-50mbps on wifi) and am looking at a mesh system - ASUS or TP-Link. Do you have a comparison anywhere? Thanks

Virgin 1gig (asym DOCSIS 3.1) package here. The theoretical speed is ~1.1Gbps down/52Mbps up. Using the included Hub 4 (gigabit ports only), I get 940/50Mbps wired, effectively maxing out the gigabit ethernet spec. Using a Note 10+ the speeds in the same room as the router tend to be around 400-600/50Mbps with a link speed of 866Mbps. Both my laptops are running the Killer AX1650 and the speeds are around the same, peaking at around 700Mbps down in the same room as the router.

Your ISP must be giving you 400 mps. If so seems pretty good speeds. I have 400 ISP and through 3 walls get 50-90 mbs through 3 walls with their providied router (AC router). So I expect putting a wired Zen satallite in that room would give me 400 mbs+ wifi 5 in that far room. I assume no loss in speed for cat6 wiring from Zen rounter to the Zen satallite (node). Appreciate comment if this is true. Nice professional looking video in your KZbin.

@joshuaewalker
@joshuaewalker 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. Any ASUS router that says it has AiMesh will connect to each other and any of those routers can become a node for the mesh network. Because the AX58U is only dual band you'll probably want to make it the secondary node on the network at the furthest distance and let one of the XT8's be the router and the other XT8 be the primary node between the first XT8 and the AX58U. If you're using Ethernet for a wired backhaul then you can continue to use the AX58U as the primary wireless router. I have the Asus ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 as my primary router hidden in a "network closet" downstairs because that thing, while awesome, is quite monstrous to look at all the time. Then, I have two XT8's mounted on the walls; one upstairs and the other in my basement "office"/kids are always in there treating it like a home theater room.

I just ordered mine but could use your link as I needed to buy in store with vouchers but your review was very useful and it was good to get a UK prospective as our upper 5GHz band use is slightly different to other areas in the world.

My broadband speed is 1Gbit‘s but i currently receive around 400-450Mbit‘s via Netgear Orbi RBK53 system. So the Asus system would be great to improve my speed!
