So, Wi-Fi engineer here who used to work for Airgo Networks and Qualcomm and most importantly the WiFi alliance. Here’s the deal. Wait like about a year before spending $700 + bucks. Why? Because there is no doubt going to be changes that can’t be updated with software. Trust me. I sat through the IEEE for like 4 years before 802.11n was ratified. At Airgo we had the fastest speed, which is why Qualcomm ended up buying us (thank god they kept on the engineers… they really just wanted our IP) This is just an onsite from the the Silicon Valley. Got any questions? I’m all ears

I bought a wifi 6 - 3 node mesh before 6e came out and its not stable. From my research, I think you 100% need wired backhaul for 6 and with 6e or 7, its optional. Wired is still better of course but I mean you can get away without wired for 6e and up. Lesson learned.

Connect your outside ring to a 2.4ghz channel. 2.4 should provide longer range with enough data to get you 1080p resolution. And remember, the fastest car on the highway isn't always the most practical, and the highway might not be the best route to take. Sometimes we need back roads, or dirt roads to get to our destination. Having more roads to travel is always nice, however. Thanks for the video.

Welcome to the wonderful world of networking in a larger home. Covid taught me the value of a Wifi Mesh system. With Work From Home and two kids doing College From Home, a centrally located wifi router wasn’t cutting it. Thankfully I had an ASUS router that could support Mesh Nodes. Once I started adding Nodes, the disruptions and complaints disappeared. With a larger wifi footprint to create, it may be time to venture into the Mesh world one Node at a time.

You’d be better off going with a Unifi setup. Separating all the components and having multiple access points including outdoor APs. Then you can roam between APs like you would on cell sites on the cellular network. You’d have to do some cabling. Sure there are mesh setups, but those usually take a performance hit because you have to use bandwidth for the back haul and interconnects. It’s also good to setup separate SSIDs and isolate those to their own VLANs so you can firewall off less trusted devices like smart home tech.

You don't need higher download for yr camera outside, your camera needs to upload the video/images so the upload speed is more important. Seeing there's no difference in upload speed between the Wifi 7 and 6E, the improvement will be marginal to non existent.

Higher numbers do not always things go faster. I have 6E here, but the only machines connected to it is my MacBook, my iPad M2 and the rest is on WiFi6. Even the iPad falls back to WiFi6 5Ghz. The router sits at about 6 meters away, but my setup is not ideal for Wi-Fi. I have limited space and my DMARC sits right by the modem. I get about 1.6Gbps down and 60 up in Wi-Fi 6E but when I am upstairs my iPad gets about 850/30 which is still pretty darn good. I picked channels that nobody is using, and since I live in a retirement condo, the oldies don't know how to anyway. My biggest improvement came when they upgraded me and I got a newer modem.

Property of your size begs for a mesh WiFi setup. A few months ago I setup a mesh WiFi for my buddy on his 4 acre property. I used TP-Link 6e (3 nodes) for the router and a new NETGEAR modem. He was previously using a single WiFi 5 modem combo setup from the cable company. The coverage with the new setup was light years from his old setup with no monthly rental fees. I use TP-Link as well on my home setup. The phone App also is light years ahead of my old NETGEAR app.

The larger number of Ghz of the wifi signal, the shorter the range or distance. In order to use a certain wifi signal, you need to make sure your internet supports a certain required internet speed in a landline. Also, your device needs to support appropriate wifi technology. If all conditions are met, you can use the wifi technology and the speed could vary depending on various factors. The speed stated on the wifi signal advertisement is a theoretical speed, so usually the actual speed could be much slower. To use Wifi 7, you device and router must support the frequency compatibility to 802.11be. The latest Apple's Macbook Pro 16" supports up to 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6E). The higher Ghz of the wifi signal could be more vulnerable to signal interference.

The router under the sofa, even though there is a lot of people that like to hide their routers like that is a bad idea. Routers are design to be in open areas and even the instructions said that for optimum performance. Also, I believe routers with antennas perform better than routers with internals ones (I seen a lot of cases, but I havent had the opportunity to test and compare that hypothesis). And finally, like other comments that I seen a mesh system might be better for your case or have other router as an access point or in bridge mode. Btw, very informative video.

In general, WiFi 6e / WiFi 7 addresses the performance hit when multiple users are attempting to use the network at once as would be the case with WiFi 6 and earlier. Certainly, the boost in constellation size is certainly nice from a raw throughput perspective. Additional key features among many others include TWT (WiFi 6) and reduced latency. Multi-link operation was mentioned. This is an absolutely key feature of WiFi 7. This is in its infancy however. Do not count on future and more advanced versions of this feature being supported in APs that are produced now. For example, the AP hardware that is currently produced may not support concurrent multi-radio operation.

Yes, I learned my lesson in the “pre-n” router days that being an early adopter is expensive and doesn’t do anything to future proof. I’m still on my wifi 6 eero pro mesh setup, glad I didn’t bump to wifi 6E last year. Holding out until wifi 7 prices come down and more widely adopted / mature, but surprised it came out so quickly. I wonder if I wait long enough if wifi 8 will be around. 😅😂
@ItamarMedeiros
@ItamarMedeiros Жыл бұрын
Probably other people will have said this in the comments already: but most bump-ups on the performance you get from switching from wifi 6 to 6e to 7 are on speed within the same distance... the range is either unaffected or actually deteriorates. If increasing range is the desired outcome, you might benefit from Mesh Wifi (the easiest) or from setting up Access Points connected to the main router (more technical knowledge required)

Generally speaking a wireless router alone doesn’t provide adequate coverage for a house above 2000 sqft. If you want to maintain aesthetics you really should be looking at breaking up the components so that you have a router/firewall, network switch, and wireless access points placed strategically inside and outside your house. Use an app on your pc (inssider) or phone (airport utility) to look for decibel levels rather than speed. Your signal strength for getting decent speeds shouldn’t be above -65db you can still get usable speeds at -68db but you will notice slow (music streaming only) speeds at -70db to -72db above that is unusable. Standard uninsulated walls decrease signal by 3db, outside walls depending on construction type can be considerably more. Go with setup above (components) over a router only or go with a mesh system (go triband only, I can explain but this post is already too long). Anything else is a waste of time, other than making a video.

Greetings. I upgraded to the WiFi 6e just over a year ago with 3 devices. It works amazingly well compared to my old router that is probably a good ten years old at the time of replacement that went from one company to another and gave me at the end no way to set it up because I had no access to the router one day when I needed access to, so it was time to say goodbye and upgrade to the new Router and repeater setup that I bought from Costco. Increase power by decreasing the frequency bandwidth. I used to find reducing from 40mhz to 20mhz would more than double the range but decrease potential maximum speed. It will obviously increase speed in many cases over large areas. Slower with better range vs faster with less range. You need outdoor access and multiple access points.
@wmcomprev

Increasing the bandwidth doesn't help in crowded areas. The wider the bandwidth, the fewer channels that are available and, therefore, the more likely you are to be walking on a neighbor or being walked on by a neighbor. (If you're walking on them, then they're also walking on you.)

I'm a pure Ethernet kind of guy. Wi-Fi is good for your TV/Chromecast/Roku/Smartphones and stuff, so you can have that in the living room near the TV where you'd be using those and put the transmit power down to low so all your neighbors aren't spying on you. Or maybe your neighbors aren't like me....that know how to wireless radiotap and crack encrypted passwords like MD-5 and SHA-1 using your GPU. Edit: For the record, sure, I radiotap because that's legal. Your radiowaves enter my house. I don't crack and hack passwords, though. I only pen test my own hardware. That's the truth. For the love of god, don't use 8 character passwords. Those crack fast on my older mid-range 6700XT 12GB. A 3090 can crack an 8 character password in 8-10 seconds. Start using 14+ character passwords minimum. Use a word you can remember, capitalize a letter in there, change an E to a 3 and then add on a couple of old telephone numbers at the end. Example: Just@Guy42428096 (if those were the last 4 digits of some child hood landline numbers or something). Something like "JustAGuy" can be cracked in 60 seconds with a 3090. Lord only knows how fast 4090's are cracking SHA-1 and SHA-256 passwords now. The AMD cards may even be faster, as that's why they were so coveted for Ethereum mining. SHA performance. Besides, if you're gonna spend ridiculous prices on WiFi 7 routers, why not just get routers with 2.5GB ports? Need more ports? Grab an 8+ port unmanaged Ethernet switch with 2.5GB ports. I mean, 10GB is becoming more mainstream with PCI-e 5.0 becoming popular, but who has 10 Gbps internet, anyways. But by all means, if you want to transfer large files from one PC to another that much faster, go for it. That's about 1GB/s speeds lol... so have M.2 NVME's on both PC's. At the same time... nothing wrong with 1Gbps Ethernet. Still blazing fast with

Thanks for a really interesting video about the wifi 7 user experience. I'm working in the wireless industry on the software side talking sometimes to antenna designers. Positioning the router is key, maybe more important than directing the antennas. It's a black magic, it's a balancing act between aesthetics and performance. Putting the router on the floor or on the wall, might have some performance issues, but wins on the aesthetics side. Try to keep it in line of sight as much as possible and away from electronic devices. Easier said than done. If you are really concerned about the throughput speed, I would suggest balancing your load. you might not expect from a wireless guy this suggestion, but in my house I got a ethernet cable to the other side of the house, where the wifi signal strength dropped and got an extender there, that will prevent retransmission, plus you have a low latency hub in the 'remote spot'.

When I had older routers with external antennas that screwed on with connectors, I got terrific signals by using directional antennas on both the computer and on the router itself. It's like a pipeline connection. My computer had 2 antenna connectors on the wireless adapter, so I used 2 directional antennas on 5GHz (and 2.4 GHz as it was a dual band antenna). I believe the antennas are still available on Amazon. They are waterproof and about 5 X 5 inches square, and would work outside if necessary. That's what would make your Ring camera have a stronger signal. Too bad you can't put a directional antenna on the Ring camera too.

Depends on how many neighbors you got around you and how many have hacking knowledge, too, though. That's why I'm an Ethernet house. Wireless IP cameras? Pshhh... all ethernet. Samsung TV with Wi-Fi? Pshh... Ethernet. Always use Ethernet when feasible. Grab some switches when you need more range or ports. I mean, no matter how fast all of this looks, it's nothing to the basic 2.5Gbps Ethernet coming out on the most basic mobos and the 10 Gbps coming out on the newer mobos with PCi-e 5.0. So, if speed is your concern, Ethernet. If cable management is too much work, just go Wi-Fi. It's VERY rare you have any neighbors with knowledge like me on radiotapping and password cracking (MD-5, SHA-1, etc., I'll grab it in a pcap file and crack it if I want to).

I did the same mistake: Buying one big router, expecting its WiFi to reach everywhere, reliably and fast. Wrong! That never works for a house with acceptable results. What you want is coverage. And the only way ro get that is more than one access point, strategically placed around your home. If you're with TP-Link already, go with their Omada setup and you'll never have coverage issues again. Yes, you'll need to run some cables through the building, but once done, you'll benefit from that in the long run. And the mesh systems are not that big of a hassle. You need to wrap your head around on what you actually NEED where and how the devices at those places can benefit from that. A 4K stream doesn't need 100MBit, a 1080p stream can be done with less than 25MBit. Does the play house in the garden need super speed or would the kids be alright with a little bit less? Or do you plan on placing data servers everywhere with them shoving around data all the time, bogging down your WiFi? In my opinion the media devices and everything stationary should be hardwired to the router. WiFi should remain for all mobile devices. These don't actually need huge bandwidths most of the time.

I decided a long time ago that I would use tp-link APs around the house instead of just one « maxi router ». On my « old » wifi 5, I’m getting 500 to 600 mbps speeds all day long. Gone are any dead spots in my house. And for the backyard, no problem either, there’s an AP for that too. And I can even reduce transmit power to something my neighbours won’t complain

Why omit the 2.4GHz range results when 2.4GHz strong point is reaching further than 5GHz. Just use channels 1, 6 & 11 (combining 2 of those is also possible for higher troughput 😊

For your particular example of the outdoor camera. Would placing a network cable or using directional wifi-antennas do the trick as well? Especially considering the hefty price tag of the router. Looked like there might be a direct way across the lawn from the house to the tree or is there a pavement in the way? If the first, burying it would be ease. I am generally not a fan of using wifi when it is not necessary. Also, for security cameras, I would worry someone can try to jam the signal while not yet in range to be seen. However that could still happen if the camera is as remote as this and people can disable it from within its blindspot.

I currently have 3 TP Link 6E mesh system in my house. They are all connected to a switch (ethernet backhauling) so I am able to use the full WiFi 6 bandwidth (it also puts out 2.4 & 5 Ghz for older devices (security camera, streaming, etc). I consistently get 800-950 out of my ATT 1 Gig service in both hardwire and wireless. I can't imagine needing more than 1 Gig internet so WiFi 7 wouldn't make sense for me.

Awesome video! So interesting! Congrats on your new house, too 😃. I live in Argentina, so I think that specific model of TP-Link router might never be available here (inflation, lousy economy, imports restrictions, etc.). As a matter of fact, the one that you’ve decided to keep using never was. Anyway, I got an Archer AX20 3 years ago, and I’m very happy with it (I live in an apartment, so it’s an “easy” use case for a router, distance wise, although not that easy as regards interferences 😆). Wifi 7 is still a little bit “raw” I think, but looks like it will be great in the future. Please keep up the good work with your videos. I love the channel!!! Just one question, and I think some of us viewers are wondering the same thing: why do you put the router under the couch? 😳

You really should employ a mesh network for your home. On another note, I really wish the technology could increase the transfer speeds on the 2.4Ghz. Right now, the 2.4G band is the best of the three that can penetrate walls and doors but it's transfer speed is limited, ironically because of its frequency. If only there was a way to improve higher frequency penetration and range without resorting to a mesh network, range extenders or powerline APs.

Do you realize for the example of the front yard camera that increasing download speeds to that location doesn't help your camera at all right? Cameras upload footage, so going from 15Mbps to 15Mbps upload is exactly the same quality of network for that camera.

To do real life test, you should stream something from one direction and then do speed test from one direction. Then only solution to ip camera issue would use mesh routers (also possible install outside) or PoE cable to ip camera.

Thanks for the very helpful and interesting video. Ihave a smaller property than you but my isp provided modem didn’t reach all bedrooms so I used older modems as extenders. Started thinking about a Mesh system about a year ago but kept getting confused between 6 and 6 E. Then heard 7 was coming! With delayed wifi 7 (I’m in Australia) i finally decided last week to go with a low cost Wi-Fi 6 with 3 nodes (my house is wired for Ethernet) because I suspected that I won’t need all the extra features! So far it works fine. The hardest part of set up was detangling all the Ethernet wires around the modem!

Lmao, $199 not going to happen. Apple left the Wi-Fi game for a reason. Profit margins are not good for commodity hardware like Wi-Fi routers. Unless you can do something, truly unique that no one else can do (like AirPods magic pairing) you can’t charge a premium for basic commodity hardware.

I don’t understand why you need a 700$ router to improve your outside connection for the camera, just place a wifi extender(you can even do it cheap by using a old router and put it in a wheater proof inclosure)outside if you don’t want to hardwire your outside camera

How much bandwidth do you actually need to the devices you are connecting? Do you ever come close to using the 1,200 Mbps of service you have? Just curious. Streaming an 8k movie will work with a 50 Mbps connection. I can't imagine a 1080p security camera needing much more than 5 Mbps using H.264.

The 46.4 Gbit/s mentioned for maximum data rate on WIFI7 are not really usable in real life applications. That is the theoretical bandwidth. But WIFI is only a half-duplex medium, so the maximum real bandwidth without overhead is half of that. If you have range issues, why not connect multiple mesh points that are connected via LAN cable to the router. That way you get a way better range.
