What is wifi calling? Why use wifi calling? Will wifi calling work on my carrier? Will wifi calling work on my phone? Those are a few questions you may be asking yourself. We cover all of those topics and much more in this video so check it out to learn more.
How is wifi calling different than using apps like Skype, WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger? Wifi calling uses a wifi network to place a call or send a message instead of sending it through the cellular network. This can come in very handy when you're on the edge of a cellular network and get poor reception. It also works great if you're in a building which can block the signal from getting in, especially in the basement.
Wifi calling is Free! You won't need to add a special plan or package onto your existing plan. You'll just need to be on a carrier that supports wifi calling and be using a device that is compatible as well. All major carriers currently offer wifi calling so whether you're on AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, or T Mobile you'll be covered. Many smaller cellular providers like Republic Wireless also offer wifi calling. Which phones work with wifi calling? Many smartphones are wifi calling enabled but it will depend on your carrier which models are available.
Will wifi calling use my minutes? That's another question you may be asking. That will depend on your carrier and plan, some don't count the minutes used over wifi and others do so check with your particular carrier to see how they handle this.
Not sure how to set up wifi calling on your phone? Not to worry, we cover how to turn wifi calling on in this video as well. Both for iPhone (iOS) and android phones.
How do you get better wifi calling? If you want to get into even more depth on how you can make your wifi calls even better we'll explain the settings on your router and how to maximize your call quality. This will improve the clarity of your calls and make using HD Voice even better. What is HD Voice? HD Voice is premium call quality through your cell phone. It doesn't cost any extra you just need a compatible device and carrier.
If you don't want to mess with settings we also cover plug and play solutions to get you going and peak performance.

Thanks for nice explanation of WiFi calling. I would like to add one more thing, when you are abroad you can also use the WiFi calling to avoid expensive roaming charges. I tried this and works excellently. So when you are in Bangkok for example your Family and friends remain connected with you and vice versa.

If you don’t have service, chances are you’re not gonna have WiFi. And if your power goes out, that’s a whole different story. My carrier told me to put WiFi calling on for the hurricane coming (Dorian), but what use is it if your power goes out? Do people usually lose service during storms?

This video was excellent on finally explaining this concept to me, thank you so much. Important follow up. At 1 point you mention the amount of data a wifi voice or video call uses. I'm not an expert on the lingo, but I thought the whole point of Wifi in general is to not use your data. So if Wi-Fi calling is using your Wi-Fi service, why does data come into play? This is important to me to know because I don't have unlimited data and so I don't want to use Wi-Fi calling through my wifi service if it turns out it's still going to eat up my minimal data anyway. Sorry for my confusion and I hope u answer!

One thing you forgot to mention is when you set up WiFi calling, you will be required to provide a physical address for 911 calls. For this reason, I don't normally connect to other WiFi, as I wouldn't want to find myself providing a wrong address, in the event of an emergency. As for whether WiFi calling uses minutes, it's irrelevant for me, as I have unlimited Canada wide calling & texts and 90 GB of data (which I have never even come close to using). Also, HD voice is also available with regular voice over IP via the Internet. I have set up several office phones that use it. I have a Google Pixel 6 on Rogers, a major Canadian cell, Internet and cable TV company.

Great video. Very informative. But I still have a few questions. How can Aunt Carol have wi-fi set up to work out in the pasture? If I'm at home then I have my own wifi and I know the password for my wifi, but if I'm out around town or at Aunt Carol's ranch then how will wifi be available? In a coffee shop I can use their wifi but only if it's free/guest wifi or if the password is posted. How will wifi calling work when I'm near OTHER people's wifi? I know, dumb questions, but I'm still a bit confused.

I don't know why Aunt Carol has WiFi in the pasture, youll have to ask her, but any WiFi that you can connect to should work, unless they block it with their firewall. In my local community centre they seem to block everything other than browsers, so it wouldn't work there.

I still do not know the difference between having my regular Wi-Fi turned on and Going into Cellular settings and turning on "Wi-Fi Calling". I do have unlimited plan, but my VPN only works until I reach a certain limit on data usage for the month. So, my goal is to figure out how much of my Wi-Fi data to use, versus how much Cellular data to use (which does have a limit). Any clarification, or suggestions?

I drove for a company that had a terminal in Lorado, TX, and every time I went to the new building I had to go inside and use Wi-Fi calling to make calls. At the old building I didn't have any issues and could use either data or Wi-Fi to make calls. The new building was five or so miles north of the old one and was made of metal. The good thing was I wasn't awakened by telemarketers and scammers calling. That Qualcomm system in the truck worked though. I started using Wi-Fi calling at home and sometimes I'll have a dropped call. I've never had that happen using regular cell towers except with another carrier.

so you can get your incoming calls thru wifi as well? We have Verizon network (USA) and want to get rid of our landline phone. I think we'll have to upgrade our iPhone as we only have a old iPhone '5'. Maybe a serious cell signal booster could do the same thing for us? We can text reliably but voice is always iffy. If the same booster system that could be used in our RV as well, that would be a bonus. Any help would be appreciated.

I was going to set this up on my att s7 edge but it wants you address for 911 purposes. I decided not to set it because I'm assuming if I'm on a wifi network away from my house and need to dial 911 it will use my home address as the location I'm at, not the real location I'm at. So if I'm at a coffee shop and dial 911 it will send emergency services to my house... What good is that?
@weboostsignal
@weboostsignal 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Duchy, that's an interesting dilemma. The 911 address sounds a lot like what MicroCell requires for GPS Location Verification. If you are at your home address, linked to your WiFi network and using WiFi calling, the 911 feature should work. However, if you're using WiFi calling on a different WiFi network (coffee shop, for example), I don't think it would still link to your home address. Not sure which carrier you are using, but Verizon posted some really helpful information about the 911 addresses purpose here: www.verizonwireless.com/support/knowledge-base-204184/

If I'm in a different country (on travel) (Roaming) how does it work ?
@JovenJB
@JovenJB 4 жыл бұрын
When you're out of the country is when you get most of the benefit. If your phone is logged on a wi-fi spot and wi-fi calling is selected, you can make a call to the USA without roaming or sounding like long distance/international call. I've done it many time as T-Mobile subscriber.

That is the gyst of it (the entire point) no need for cell service, only wifi required. Think of it like using facebook calling, or skype - but you don't need the app.

weBoost I have used wifi calling at home for several years because I don't have cell service there and it is fantastic. I also have an RV and use wifi calling in it also. I am being successful using wifi calling in the RV. My question is what would be the benefit of a cell booster over wifi calling assuming a good internet connection at the park?

I still don’t completely understand if long distance charges apply. For example. I have Rogers wireless with free local calling/ unlimited incoming. Now if I’m at home with wifi calling and I make a long distance call am I charged long distance. I have already called Rogers wireless and I’m more confused. First she said absolutely not. Then she changed her mind.

I knaow this has been a long time comment but I hope my response helps - if you call someone internationally using wifi calling, your service provider may bill you whether u make regular wifi call or using an app such as whatsapp. To avoid that, turn on your airplane mode and turn on wifi. With that, no matter how long you make calls, there's no way your service provider bills you.
@James_Knott
@James_Knott 9 ай бұрын
It makes no difference for billing. If you paid for a long distance call when connected to the cell network, you'd still pay on WiFi calling. It only improves your connection to Rogers. BTW, I'm also on Rogers and have unlimited Canada wide calling and texts. However, I have a poor signal in my condo, so WiFi calling gives me good service.

My friend is still using an analog cell phone and has problems with dropped calls when at home. Is there any way for him to connect to WiFi?
@James_Knott
@James_Knott 9 ай бұрын
Analog? Does anyone still support that? Where I live, analog was shut down almost 20 years ago. Perhaps they're using a 2G or 3G phone? Those don't support WiFi calling. They'll likely soon not work at all, as 2G & 3G are phased out.

It's a long story and there are videos about it, but essentially VoLTE (4G), VoNR (5G) and WiFi calling are all essentially the same thing. WiFi calling is just another method for connecting to the cell phone network.
