@TechThatDoesntByte2 жыл бұрын
You'll still be able to receive phone calls to your original number. When someone calls your Google Voice number (not your original number) it will show on the lock screen the incoming call and the Google voice icon underneath it. That indicates that someone is calling your Google voice number. One thing to note is if want to make an outgoing call using your Google Voice number you'll need to make the outgoing call within the Google Voice app.

Love your video.....but I have a question. I am using Tracfone for the past 15 years and just installed Google Voice because our vacation home has poor cell service. I can make GV call over wifi, but just like your phone on this video....any incoming call triggers the call banner and vibrates.....but no phone ringer? Is there any possible way to get the phone to ring like my regular phone app? I have watched a ton of tutorial videos and nothing seems to get me to the point I need....the phone to ring. I need it on wifi...not my carrier.
@TechThatDoesntByte3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark. Thank you for your question. We'll try testing it on our end again. There should be way to get the phone ringer back.
@jb8888888882 жыл бұрын
I noticed that too.IDK why ring isn't on by default. I had to go to Settings > Notifications > Advanced > Sound. "Default" is the same as "none." So I changed it to a ringtone. It didn't take at first, still missed calls, had to do al that _again,_ then it worked.

@@spiritofMongan I don't think there is a native Google Voice app for computers. You'll need to use a web browser such as Chrome Edge to login and use Google Voice on the browser. If you're using Chrome or Edge there is app install button on the address bar that will make it as a web app.

Hi there. It should already be enabled if you're attempting to make and receive calls from a computer using a web browser. I am moving from the US to Portugal and may not have Wi-Fi in my home. I need a service to occasionally make and receive business calls and texts to and from the US. I keep reading that you can't use google voice without Wi-FI. Will I be able to use Google Voice from home if I don't have Wi-Fi? Could you please confirm this. Thank you
@TechThatDoesntByte2 жыл бұрын
Hi Michele. You can use Google Voice with mobile data from a wireless carrier if you don't have Wi-Fi. The one thing you have to do is to make sure to select 'Prefer Wi-Fi and mobile data' within the Google Voice app. Google has a support article on how you can change the settings. support.google.com/voice/answer/7649189?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid&oco=0 I highly recommend to test the calling ability once you have made the changes. You can test it by turning off your Wi-Fi on your smartphone and make sure you're connected to your cell service provider (i.e, AT&T, Verizon, etc....) and call your Google Voice number from a different phone.

With GV can I cancel my cell service with T-Mobile or At&T?
@TechThatDoesntByte2 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris. GV is meant to be used as a second or backup line. However, you should not cancel your cell service. GV is not a replacement to your cell service because you still need some form of data connection (Wi-Fi or mobile data) in order to use GV. GV also cannot make emergency calls.

I hope you can help me confirm something regarding my situation: 1) I currently have a Verizon plan with a US number. 2) I am going oversees for a year and do not want to cancel my Verizon account. I want to continue paying for my plan so I do not lose my phone number. 3) I would like for people to be able to still call me on my local Verizon # and still reach me overseas w/o paying international fees. And I would like to call from overseas local numbers w/o paying international calling fees as well. Keeping this in mind, I should do the following: 1) Get the Google Voice App on my current iPhone with a Google local phone number. 2) Forward my Verizon # to Google Voice # 3) When overseas, use wifi to receive calls from the US and make phone calls to the US from the Google Voice app. Is this correct so far?? Also, I do not intend to buy an international SIM card for my phone but rather get a different phone and plan for calls in Bosnia. I am just worried about downloading/installing Google Voice on a new device with an international SIM card and having to verify my Google Voice number on it. What are your thoughts on that?? Thank you in advance for your input/advice in this matter!!!

Hi Violeta. Thank you for the comment. I'm currently reading through your comment and I should have an answer for you very soon.
@TechThatDoesntByte3 жыл бұрын
Hi Violeta. Everything you mention in this part is correct. "1) Get the Google Voice App on my current iPhone with a Google local phone number. 2) Forward my Verizon # to Google Voice # 3) When overseas, use wifi to receive calls from the US and make phone calls to the US from the Google Voice app." I would also recommend checking with Verizon about long term call forwarding. I'm not sure if they have a policy about call forwarding. Technically you should be able use Google voice on your new phone and plan since your Google Voice account is already set up. However, I do not know if the international sim will trigger some sort re-verification. It's something I still want to test once I start traveling overseas again. I recommend that you check out Google Voice reddit page. There's a lot of advice given on that page. www.reddit.com/r/Googlevoice/ I hope this helps and let us know if you have any other questions.

@TechThatDoesntByte3 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew. Thank you for watching! I believe you can only use google voice for phone calls only. You'll need keep Google Fi for data usage. I recommend that you forward your Google Fi phone number to your Google Voice number so that you'll be able to pick up the phone calls with your Google Voice number instead of your Google Fi number in order to avoid roaming charges for voice calls. I would also look at eSIM data providers like Airalo, Truphone, or Dent Wireless. You can purchase data plans for many different regions. I hope this helps!

This is great. I have a question. I live overseas. I have had an AT&T number that I want to move to Google voice so I can mostly receive bank verification codes. I believe this is one way to receive those codes when the AT&T phone does not work over here? I understand it's a 20 dollar fee to port my cell number. How do I activate the AT&T carrier when I go back to the states? If I land in the states, and I'm in the airport trying to call family, am I able to do that in advance or once I'm on the ground? Any ideas and help?
@TechThatDoesntByte Жыл бұрын
Hi Judy. Thank you for the comment. It would be best to not move your AT&T number to Google voice if you want to get bank verification codes. Most banks and other services are starting to not allow Google voice numbers to be used as a method to receive those type of verification codes. Do you have Wi-Fi calling enabled with AT&T? This should allow you to make/receive calls and receive text messages from the states when you live overseas. www.att.com/features/wifi-calling/
