How do you practice CW when you don't have access to a radio?
@ChrisV_WP4PUV25 күн бұрын
I don’t yet own a CW capable radio (want to build a QMX or QCX-mini). I built a little no-solder straight key kit that I can practice sending with. For decoding, I practice with videos like yours and with the Morse Elmer app.

i tap on my leg like i have a straight key while driving.

I have both the dongle and assembled the box kit as I thought it may be good for some practice but have not gotten either to work. So I now use a Morserino I assembled. Since my success at kits is 50/50 I ordered my QMX pre-built to practice with next.

Ok I a totally new to CW but am dying to try. Is the purpose of this unit for practice? Do I need a HAM license to operate?
@Pa11en25 күн бұрын
@@doeleen It is to practice CW with other learning CW online. No licence is necessary as it over the internet and does not go over the air.

Very cool. This will be a Christmas gift to my 2 grandsons to get them interested in Ham radio. They both have iPads so I assume they can use adapters to connect & operate. They would need to see the translation at first to read a message.
@HamRadioDuo25 күн бұрын
Great idea! We actually have an Ipad and will test out the adapter on ours for you. To get started you can just use the VBand website and two keys on the keyboard to give it a try. Our other video is just about VBand itself if you haven't seen that one. It is the starting point to getting the CW Hotline. 73, Becky es Mike kzbin.info/www/bejne/apTMe4Vjnaqsd5o

Thanks Scott! I really is pretty fun to practice on and for sending and receiving with another person when you can't get on the air for whatever reason. 73, Becky es Mike

LOL yourmom I love doing funny ssid's. My current main ssid is "The Force" so when someone asks for my wifi, I say "Use The Force" 😃

HiHi, that's a good one! When you have teenagers and ask them what the WiFi should be called, you never know what answer you'll get and then have to stick with. 🤣 73, Becky es Mike

Add a POT between the speaker wires for volume control I did that to mine recently... It's a world of difference, I don't bug anyone in the house anymore.

That's a great idea. I think the sound just bounces around the box and regardless of the tape, it's pretty loud!! HiHi 73, Becky es Mike

This is very cool. Does it send tones in real time? Or does the sending device first decode the message, and sends it as text, and the "receiver" encodes it to morse? I was looking at the Morserino, but that one isn't real time. This one could be a lot cooler actually.
@HamRadioDuo7 күн бұрын
It sends the sidetone in real time so that there is no latency. You hear exactly what you key, even on a straight key, mistakes and all! When it sends it to the other side, there is a delay but it also is exactly as you keyed it, mistakes and all. If you use it as an adapter to use with the VBAND website, you hear the sidetone in real time and then the morse code is decoded or not decoded depending on if the code is good enough, which is great sending practice. 73 Mike N4FFF es Becky N4BKY

CW is a journey and mistakes come with the territory for sure. Sometimes you have no clue that you just sent a G and meant to send a W. HiHi! After getting off the air sometimes we look at each other like, I'm not sure what I just sent or heard, but it was still fun!!! 73, Becky es Mike
@Paul_KE9BHN25 күн бұрын
@@HamRadioDuo Let's air the dirty laundry: J is too long, so I just use W; every H is followed by a 1 minute pause, but 5 no effort; I like some numbers by ear, others I won't do. The practice itself is relaxing tho.

We definitely prefer to get on the air when we can, but found this is a fun tool to practice CW when you don't yet have a radio or the bands just aren't open for whatever reason. 73, Becky es Mike
