There used to be hundreds of clearly definable dialects in Britain. Most of them are dying out or died out many decades ago. The advent of mass communication - Radio, TV and now Internet means that young people learn what is called 'Standard English'. In the 1930s, there was no TV of Internet and Radio took second place to oral prowess of our parents, whose conversations, instructions and advice were delivered in the rich, colourful idiom of the Wigan hinterland.
'howd thi din un cahr thi dehn' simply means 'Shut up and sit down' in a dialect or northern english from around Wigan.
In this is part 1 of a 10 part series we will dive right in without translation. As you progress through the series you'll learn the intricacies of Billinge dialect and will be able to understand better.
