Wigan CRDC Abandoned Locos for Scrap

Around 2002 a visit round Wigan CRDC can be seen with many derelict locos heading for the scrap man. Only one loco I can see in this is saved in the form of 37407, 47768 also featured still exists albeit in a non running conditon at Carnforth.

A former driver from EWS once told me that EWS really stood for "Every Working (loco) Scrapped". Anyway, another 37 survived Wigan - 37170 became 97302 - now called 'Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways'

Ews were investigated for anti competition practices, because of there policy of scrapping working locomotives instead of offering them for sale. The investigation uncovered evidence of some locomotives being deliberately cut with a torch so they were unsuitable for resale. Many of the locomotives targeted this way were Ets fitted. As these were the most sort after.

Pretty sure those red 47s used to pull the royal mail night mail train, and those Loadhaul locos used to pull the MGR coal hopper wagons into Drax Power Station.

Yes they did Steve, I’ve got videos of 47s on parcels collection if you would like to watch. Unfortunately haven’t got any videos of the MGR trains.

What a waste of good usable loco's we need them now more than ever as they're far cheaper to do up than build new! Ews was ruthless and they just trashed all decent locos and sent them off to the bone yards when they could have made more money than scraping them no wonder they went bust as they was just evil and didn't want anyone else to profit from there sales of locos as that's how it looks! A good video but sad 😥

To be honest I’ve had a good nosey at that point and I’ve come to the conclusion it looks like the engine room of a class 47. Hope this helps 👍🏼
