They also made a LOT of money because they had GOVERNMENT CONTRACTS for their sleeping bags. I was issued is two bag 60 Below system when I was in Afghanistan and I WAS SOOOOOO THANKFUL TO HAVE IT . I was in Afghanistan for 3 years and slept in it every day EXCEPT IN THE SUMMER but certainly got my use out of it so when I came home I chucked out the money to buy a brand new one for myself.

Hey william james Rapp, good name , anyway govt. contract has to go into competition with other makers and this one WON the contract. Get the sun walkers Wiggy offers and man you will sleep in everyday. Glad your home bro.

I've owned my wiggys ultralight 20 degree bag for over twenty years, it's kept me warm at that temp and lower, and it still looks brand spanking new, through countless washings. Yes, YOU CAN WASH THEM! Huge selling point. Great bags. Heavy? Sure, but bombproof.

Those big zippers were common in the older 70's Down Sleeping bags. Older Military field jackets had them as well. I just picked up a Hinter rectangular hooded model today in mint condition from my local SAVERS Thrift store for $8.50 with the Wiggy's compression sack.. It's a beast but It's a small with 31" width, I'm pretty wide in the shoulders. Been wanting one for years.

They are heavy and huge. However they are the highest quality, warm AF and you can throw them in the washer. American made. Great emergency bag (very popular for this in Alaska)
@picklerick9578
@picklerick9578 3 жыл бұрын
They're the "highest quality" yes. But the MSS system actually uses a tiered system, which means that this system is already less usable than an actual MSS. While yes, it is also machine washable, it's still not made to a true milspec. Wiggys only has a contract with the F35 program. The concept of a side zipper is also retarded.

I own several Wiggy's sleeping bags of various weights, from a 70degree summer bag to a 60degree below 0 degree artic sleep system. they by far the best made bags, period, no exception. not only are they warm but can be washed many times to keep their loft and great feel. i can not say enough about Wiggy's quality and they are made here in the USA. I put my money where my mouth is.

I love all my Wiggy bags! I mostly go winter camping and the Kelty Redcloud backpack will fit the Wiggy two bag system along with all my gear! I usally use the 0 degree bag with the fishnet underware and am toasty in the teens. The lowest I've had here was 8, and was warm in the o degree, but I wanted to test the overbag and of course it was super toasty! I even have the Antarctic bag I got for a steal on EBay. I'll have to go somwhere -40 to -60 to enjoy it. Way to hot for Virginia!

@@picklerick9578 Incorrect. Some SF groups approach Wiggy's directly, and issue the bags to their troops. No NSN or contact competition needed. NSN's are for military issued items "across the board". Many individual units use specific items without a NSN. Additionally, Berry compliance always outweighs NSN classification.

I own two wiggy's bags. One black Arctic and one camo Arctic. They have not been slept in as of yet. But, when my wife and I do go camping, or have an emergency they do zip together. I'm an Overkill guy, and I like the extra padding and extra low temperature rating of the bags. I am not concerned with weight. I want to get extra bags for the entire family someday. And the ground pad which is beyond belief if you look at it. I have visited with Jerry quite lengthy at times and he is a wonderful man . Can't go wrong in one of these bags.

I have the Superlight XL/Long WITH the pillow, as well. I’ve never had a problem stuffing it in the compression bag. And I can get it to compress at just over the size of a basketball. Not sure why you struggle so badly. Wiggys makes a radial compression bag with straps on the long side vs the end of the bag too. It’s far easier to attach to a pack horizontally, or straight down the center of the pack. Until you own a Wiggys bag, no one will understand. I stole mine off Craigslist. Guy had 2 for $40 each! He used this bag one night in Afghanistan as they couldn’t guarantee him a cot when he got deployed. I should have bought both. For big guys like me (6’4”, 260lbs) my trick is to lay the bags facing on top of each other and zip them together to form a giant mummy bag with two separate leg boxes and doubles the width around my torso. I use it like a big comforter bag. Plenty of leg room this way. I don’t like my legs confined in a small foot box and this solved that, as well as more than enough material to wrap me like a blanket with no drafts. I only use one zipper to attach. FYI for anyone like me looking for more space

From a business standpoint, it makes sense. Brick-n-mortar stores are expensive to have. So by forgoing them in the 'lower 48' keeps prices down. Having on Up North caters to a special clientele as well as keeps shipping costs and times to a minimum.

So the ratings are the for the lowest safe temperature and the bags are way over their stated weights? No wonder some people call wiggys a scam! Sure they may be robust bags but when someone orders that huge thing online and discovers it much heavier than advertised and doesn’t really keep you as warm as the temp rating of the bag states then I would be annoyed
@BackPackHack
@BackPackHack 2 жыл бұрын
Temperature ratings aren't an exact science. There's no way any of them can say, "You WILL be nice and toasty warm at __F...". And I think you'll find MOST manufacturers tend to fib a bit.
@impermanenthuman8427
@impermanenthuman8427 2 жыл бұрын
@@BackPackHack they all seem to be fibbing to an equal degree I guess, I suppose we need to just allow and accept that margin of exaggeration 😆 What are your views of the Snugpak Special Forces sleep system? I’m struggling to find any direct comparative reviews of Snugpak ‘Softie’ insulation vs Climashield? I have a Helikon Tex Swagman roll (hooded poncho liner) with Climashield in it and it is surprisingly warm for how thin it is, but I also have a Snugpak Sasquatch jacket and was surprised at how ‘un-warm’ it seems relative to how thick and puffy it is. I know the ‘thru-hiker’ crowd seem to really like the Enlightened Equipment Apex (Climashield) jacket and it takes a lot to get them to choose synthetic over down (they almost all still choose down quilts) I am slightly allergic to down, so I am considering one of the Enlightened Equipment Apex Quilts, they are almost half the weight of a comparatively temp rated Snugpak or Wiggy bag, although the materials would be less durable, but at least the product weights are genuine as weight is important to me

These are built for normal people, 6 foot 200# and its roomy, most others are for 5'5'' 145# uno Hobbits. So if you see a need to sleep in all your gear in crappy weather then why not get a good bag that is your size. You will sure feel better warm and relaxed than twisted in a knot all night. I log roll all night the bag stays put I just tumble inside it and have no issues.
@picklerick9578
@picklerick9578 3 жыл бұрын
Because there are better systems out there. The snugpak is arguably a superior product. It basically took what the MSS Sleep Sytem tried to do and just made it better. You can fit literally everything into the stuff sack. This is big, bulky, isn't a tiered system, weighs way more than it should, doesn't have a water proof layer like an actual good bivy, etc.
@johnedwards6419
@johnedwards6419 3 жыл бұрын
I have the Wiggy's sleeping system FTRSS which is a 2 bag system and will keep you warm down to -60 degrees. You may never sleep in that cold of temp but realize that you have 2 sleeping bags that will mate one on the outside of the other (OR) side by side to double the width. The quality is excellent, Check out William James Rapp review about 7 months ago who used his sleeping system in Afghanistan for 3 years and loved it. I winter backpack and camp in the winter and I always have a bog or bags to keep me warm in any weather.

I'm not a fan of Wiggy's it's way too bulky and you can only carry one of his bags at one time. They're also just way too much material. The general MSS system is still better than all of these systems on the market. The Wiggy FTRSS isn't even a kit. It's just a line of products. The Snugpak at least has a whole kit that's actually a tier system.

Nothing against Wiggys but a military contract only means stuff made to the lowest acceptable standard at the highest price.
@picklerick9578
@picklerick9578 3 жыл бұрын
And the lowest acceptance standard is good durability. That's not an argument. First of all, it's not the lowest set of standards, it's a minimum set of standards, meaning they have to meat a quality level that is acceptable for field use. There's a reason why the military only goes through Tennier Indistries and ThermaRest for a sleeping pad. Wiggy's had a limited contract for the F35. Even then, they would've been replaced every like 3 years because they're required to keep their products in a vacuum. Other than that, they don't have any other contracts. That's why its...oh yes, Tennier Industries.
