I have researched them quite a bit, and I have done volunteer work in convalescent hospitals. I used to bring bluegrass bands in to play for the old folks, and several of the directors told me that they had never seen these patients quite so animated as when they were hearin music. Some of the musicians that i hired freaked out seeing old people in that condition. I think it strikes a chord in people, and they know they are heading for that too. Old age is sad indeed.

The more I watch this series, the more I hope I'll never have to deal with a situation like this. I believe Erica wants what's best for her parents but I can also understand them, not wanting to go to a home ...
@elizabethburt815612 жыл бұрын
Ruth is being very difficult, so it is easy to understand why Erica went behind her back. Her insinuation is that Erica's motives are selfish. Erica just wants to feel peaceful and know that her parents are safe. Ruth is the control freak, if you ask me. Her stubborness could easily jeapardize her husband, too. At some point, she is going to have to admit that they need assistance and that Erica is competent to make decisions. This situation is very real. Thank you Wigs, another winner!
@CharlesGuzman12 жыл бұрын
I didn't mean to say that perfection is what is expected in a situation like this. But a VERY simple understanding of empathy and respect for individuals can go a long way in helping the situation in the best way possible. People are all not like me, and it would be a delusion to expect that from everyone, but I think there are common understandings that people should have of each other. Empathy puts yourself in the other's place and shows maturity, understanding, and wisdom.

There are a few good ideas that could fix those problems, for example, mats on the floor of the bathtub/shower, grip handles as well. They could also allow them to use the stairs, but they'd have to build in a wheelchair system. Erica could easily put up signs around the house, and pictures to help her dad. :) Reminders always work! (unless you have dyslexia like my mother)

No one should be forced to stick to their parents for obligation, people move on and make their own lives, considering what Erica is doing she is actually putting more effort to her parents than most people I know. And yes "stuck" is the right word its a very hard responsibility that could put a stop to her life for many many years and financially speaking I don't even want to imagine.

As an only child preparing to deal with this same issue, I have to say she was right. Her parents are aging and they need help caring for themselves. They don't have to be in a nursing home, but in a retirement community for people that can moderately care for themselves, she would at least have peace of mind. No couple at that age should live alone in a three story home with the memory and functional incapacities they are dealing with. It isn't safe- whether they want to admit it or not.

Zavan, you're a really great guy! I agree with you. She could move in with them and make sure they lived on one floor. But the place also needs to re-do the bathrooms so they don't slip in the tub and can get in an out easily. And then there is always the problem of her dad leaving the pot of soup and the curtain catching fire.
@QC24French12 жыл бұрын
People say that about most of their parents when they're that age. My mom always says my grandma is stubborn, but I bet one day I will think my mom is stubborn when she gets to that age. I think at that stage everyone would stubbornly deny they are growing old, because it simply sucks to embrace a crappy reality.
@TheBhumiChannel12 жыл бұрын
My point is simply that it is a family decision. She is entirely a part of that family and that's what children of aging and ailing parents do. Technically, the house belongs to her parents, but since she is part of the family and the only child, her opinion is important.
@BloomingWithBrittney12 жыл бұрын
Yessss "stuck" the way parents who have unplanned children feel "stuck" it's reality. Erica is unmarried and her clock is ticking... if something happens to her parents she will be living for them... quit her job and move home to take care of them with no real life of her own. Not all retirement homes are crappy...but they certainly could down size to avoid further incidents

Look people to clarify treat your parents like they treated you when you were starting life, with patience and understanding above all love, so before anyone start looking at options to place their parents, remember how would you have felt if your mom thought, when you were very young and needed her more than ever! "looks like little Bhumi is getting hard to handle so she needs to be placed" No you are there for your parents like they were their for you!

It just takes a little time to realize that at some point we sacrifice part of our lives to be there for the ones we love.It may seem that we´re losing ourselves when actually we´re only changing priorities. I have a 4 years old son and I completely changed after him. I don´t do anything dangerous because i need to be here in the next 14 years at least. I´ll do the things I hate most, stay behind an office desk, be a lawyer, as long as by the end of the day I´m at home with him and my husband...

When Erica took the realtor upstairs, she should have hid her in her own room instead of putting her in her mothers room where now she will be discovered. Then when her parents were occupied, she could have discreetly left without being noticed. Of course, in a panic, you don't always think of these things.

I don't think Erica is suggesting they go to live in an old age home. Rather she wants to assess what options are available so they have as nice a facility as is affordable for them. There are many communities that cater to the elderly and some are very nice, for those who can afford them. They are not necessarily going to get better care staying in their house or be treated with more dignity and kindness, even if they move the beds downstairs.

That house is enormous. While it is spacious and elegant, it is an accident waiting to happen. They need to live on one level and have assistance. Her father is already showing beginning signs of dementia. Erika is a responsible daughter, and these decisions are never easy. She wants to see her parents protected and out of danger. Is that so wrong? While she may have acted deviously, we can see from her mother's attitude why she felt she had to do it that way.
@elizabethburt815612 жыл бұрын
I understand what you're saying, even though perhaps using the word "stuck" may push buttons with some. It isn't a cut and dry matter and Erica is immeshed in this situation, too. She must step in to make sure her parents are safe from harm. If she acts sentimentally, letting them keep going as is, they could kill themselves, and she would be responsible. People are getting too idealistic and not so realistic. Old folks must me taken care of and sometimes hard decision are made doing so.
@KellyLudwin12 жыл бұрын
It's not like Erica has any right to tell her parents what to do, especially since she is making poor choices in her own life by wasting herself on a married man.
@TheBhumiChannel12 жыл бұрын
The most selfishly lucrative thing for Erica to do is to talk her parents into holding on to the house and then sell it later, after they die. That mansion is in San Francisco and is probably worth 5 or 6 million dollars. If she sells it, she will be set for life. The fact that she wants to get her parent set up, shows that she is thinking of their welfare. At this point, Erica, even if she doesn't work at her career for a few years will be fine, financially.
@omshanti568412 жыл бұрын
Living in a hospice was not what Erica was suggesting. A hospice is a place for people to live out the last six months of their life with round the clock care and is a hospital, more or less. Rather Erica probably wants them to get into a nice house in a NICE retirement community. She wants her parents to be safe from accidents. This is a dilemma which many children face. If they burned the house down or killed themselves because she failed to act, she would never have forgiven herself.
@CharlesGuzman12 жыл бұрын
If Erica in this show would do that with her parents, I believe that she would gain more ground with them in the short term and the long term and she would be able to gain their trust. Relationships are 97 percent based on trust, and right now her parents don't trust her. Notice how the mom asked for the house key back? If Erica gains their trust by wisdom, she won't have to fight with them every step of the way. Sure this is realistic, but it's also sad how much people lack understanding...
@roselovesmakeup12 жыл бұрын
It is less expensive to hire a live in caregiver than to live in a retirement home, but many might not like strangers living in in the house, then again, in a retirement home there are lots of strangers.

@rmoc100012 жыл бұрын
So, for the single ones the advice: travel, climb a mountain, have a motorcicle, face death closely, because we get to this point where we´re not even allowed to die. Eigther because your parents, or your son, or your husband needs you. The older you get more responsabilities with the loved ones you´re gonna get. Erica is facing this transition. From independent to the mother and father role... I guess she´s going to be ok. If she didn´t want to help her parents she would not be flying home.
@TheBhumiChannel12 жыл бұрын
They DO have medical issues that are getting very serious and are accident prone and already several potentially deadly incidents have happened. Her father, while a lovely man, has beginning stages of dementia. He fell asleep at a stop light and nearly burned the house down. Her mom fell down the stairs. If it was my parents, I would be extremely concerned and start weighing the options so that they are safe. Erica would be irresponsible if she didn't start intervening on their behalf.
@elizabethburt815612 жыл бұрын
0.15 Erica looks like she is hiding a vase of wilted roses from the realtor, then she turns around with it behind her back so that she can see it. Why hide it, then show her?
@hope2471812 жыл бұрын
"stuck" caring for her parents? Wow. This is the type of thinking people have? People should never feel "stuck" with their parents, at least not when they are as decent as Erica's parents. Erica probably grew up in that beautiful house and now she wants her parents to move to some crappy retirement home, shame on her and all the people who think like that...what a brat
@TheBhumiChannel12 жыл бұрын
Sorry, but it is hers to sell since they are a family. Erica is putting her own life on hold to care for her folks the best she can. As she said earlier, if one of them dies, she will have to go live with them or they with her. So, this means that this decision is a family matter. If it affects Erica, she has a right to make some decisions. When people get too old, their care is always put in the hands of the children and if they are lucky, their children unselfishly do what they must to help.
@TheBhumiChannel12 жыл бұрын
She is also loving, responsible, facing a difficult situation and very human. Can't we cut her some slack? It's not like her mother isn't all those things too. If Erica doesn't take some initiative, they might kill themselves in that house with the three flight of stairs. Her father already almost burned the house down and her mom fell down the stairs..... what would you do?
@TheBhumiChannel12 жыл бұрын
Well, sue her cuz she isn't perfect. All I'm saying is she does the best she can considering the flak she gets every time she tries to make some arrangement to secure their final years. She had some tender moments with her dad, so we see they have a loving relationship. Dealing with aging parents, especially ones who fight you every step of the way is upsetting for all concerned. This is a family issue, and the way WIGS presents it is very real, and I can relate to all of them, warts and all.
@elizabethburt815612 жыл бұрын
Actually, that's what I would do, too.
@elizabethburt815612 жыл бұрын
Agree with you about it being understandable, but how could she have approached it differently? Already, Erica was trying to bring in the appraiser during a time when her parents weren't around, so that she didn't have to deal with their resistance. Maybe that was too devious? But being up-front with her mom doesn't seem to work either. It's easy to say she could have done it differently since this way obviously carried with it the chance of being found out. But how?
@BeautifulxInsanityC12 жыл бұрын
She probably shouldnt have reccomended a retirement home but a smaller house deffinetly one with no stairs but still enough room, I believe her mom is in denial and doesnt she shes only looking out for her, they want to still be independent but that can only go so far at their age, her father doesnt seem as against the idea its the mother mainly but her stubborness could end up hurting the father.

True, not all are crappy. But in this case, it's obviously not wanted by the parents. And it's not like they have terrible medical issues where they need to be cared for 24/7. They can maintain their autonomy just fine. "Erica is unmarried and her clock is ticking" WOW. It doesn't seem like she'll get married anytime soon, and her biological clock has made its last tick considering she's 50. It's such a selfish action, YES Erica is selfish!
@rmoc100012 жыл бұрын
Yes, I think Erica looks a bit selfish by trying to talk them into selling their house to have money for retirement place. It looks like she´s trying so save her life instead of her parents. But i don´t think it´s because she wants her parents out of the way, She just hasn´t realized yet that at some point she takes over the mother/father parents. Well we clearly don't disagree. I guess the thing we are debating then is whether Erica is a crazy bitch. I am sure she loses her patience -- after all, her life is up in the air and her career is taking a dive. I just know how family dynamics go, and I think this one is very realistic. They both push each other's buttons and get upset. Everything you say about how to do it is probably wise and right, and yet in the heat of the situation, we don't always act like saints. She is no different.
