There’s a lot of confusion when it comes to esd tools. Esd tools do not eliminate static unless you are using a grounding device. In fact the handles if used without a grounding device will allow current to pass directly through the handle and on to you or whatever your working on. Esd should never be used with high voltage projects such as doing electrical work on a house. Esd tools are specifically for assembling computer components such as a motherboard but again you must also use a grounding device otherwise the tool becomes even more damaging than a regular driver
@sween187
@sween187 2 жыл бұрын
Yep, it allows "electrical" (static) flow so it can be dissipated by the grounded device. Whereas electrician tools will be insulated stopping the flow of electrical.

It's just something to get you to spend more money. I know computer builders and I know a guy who owns a very successful computer shop here locally. It's a huge business. None of his guys use a grounded strap, i know what they are, but I asked him about it one day we were talking about them, and he said his hands are in all kinds of devices every day, and he's never needed nor does he want that thing. 🤷 i don't know, I'm not a computer guy. But if multiple people in the business say it's a waste of money....if it clucks like a chicken, you know the rest.

@@Chris.Rhodes esd tools are to protect the computer components that your working on not the user. He’s thinking in perspective of him getting electrocuted which isn’t what esd tools are for. The grounding device is to keep any static or current naturally found on the human body and ground it so it doesn’t transfer to computer components and fry their internals. Any static energy transferred to electrical components when it’s not in full circuit are extremely damaging to those components, ie when your disassembling a computer to change/repair component’s. It sounds like a bad computer repairmen who doesn’t understand the importance of using an esd tool. I guess it’s also important to state that esd tools aren’t for disassembling computer fans and other larger components. It’s basically just for working circuitry on something like a motherboard. It’s fine if one uses a normal screwdriver to remove the actual motherboard from a case but if one wants to change things like a receptor or microcontroller on that motherboard they should be using esd tools with grounding device

@@Flockingtheherd yeah I know what they are and what they're for, and so does he. But I couldn't tell you how far in depth they get with repairing to know if it really is needed with what he does. Doc, I just picked up a Vega Industries BR150 bit ratchet (excellent...the best yet, IME). It's 6" long, has an unbelievably tiny head, is reversible, polished chrome finish, and feels like an 80T or so. High-quality feel and is a must-buy. I overpaid at a tools supply, but I think it's about $20 online. They also had Vega bits and I was very impressed with the quality and feel of them, too. There are bit sets that I think you'd like, as well. I, too, am a Wera and Wiha fan, Klein maybe a bit (lol) less because they always have some weird "proprietariness" to them. I was also disappointed in my iFixIt kit, with several bits crapping out with basic use.

Most of what you buy nowadays is made in China, and the quality of what you get depends on who is ordering it. I have some very nice products made in China, and junk made in USA. Honestly I wouldn't trust most Amazon reviews. They are way too bias and subjective with people complaining about the most irrelevant things Somebody had rated a balisong utility knife stars 3 🌟 claiming it was too small, even after acknowledging the Dimensions before purchase. He said some like this: even though I checked out the dimensions when it arrived it was a lot smaller than I imagined. (Dimensions were correct it's his perception that was off) So essentially their giving a product a negative review and only giving them 3 stars because as a consumer "They" failed to understand and perceive measurements, and yet somehow that is the merchants problem. The level of ignorance of some reviews paint most these people as uneducated commoners

When I was looking around I came down to that little Hoto and the Megapro 24-in-1. In the end the Hoto is discounted so no brainer. But the sticker price is the same and price being equal, the megapro is ergonomic for the hand, the Hoto is comfortable in the pocket. Either one of them happily replaces half the tools for my 3D printer (with just a couple extra H3/H4 bits) and can live in a little drawer under it.

I like the Wiha System 4 and System 6 stuff. The advantage with the blade system is getting into those deep/tight places where bit holders won't reach. A System 4 handle with a PH1/4mm blade and a System 6 handle with a PH2/6mm blade covers 99% of everything I need in the data centre. Though I do prefer the old style System 4 precision handle even if the 2.5mm ball bearings have a tendency to get lost.

Interesting you mention other brands being more China quality than German. This set is made in China and is of zero German quality. Wiha also has many bits / bit sets made in Vietnam, which seem to be better quality than Chinese. You can still find German made Wiha bits and bit sets but they are few and far between. When I do find them I buy in bulk and they are expensive. The German bits, especially the Torx bits do last considerably longer than the Chinese or Vietnam made bits. what I would personally consider doing is getting the HOTO, as you can get 2 of them for the price of 1 and then you can mix and match bits from a bit set. something important to me is to have more than one driver so you can swap drivers instead of bits. the wiha is probably the better quality option, but the compactness of the hoto speaks to me. personally I would like to get a precision to normal size adapter and carry a small set of screws so I can adapt between the 2 bit standards. although i really like those really cheap kits with the driver that has the drop down extender so you don't have to carry a seperate tip to extend it out. if only those had bit storage...

I have that iFixit precision kit in my bag. I feel it gets kind of a bad rap, I get it in your use case. Overlanding you don't need to bring another anchor, but for me the size and weight work. The thing that bothers me most is the toolkit it came from. That big bulky thing is marketed as an end-all be-all for everyone. I think every IT tech has one, and they aren't cheap. But a lot of that kit is geared at cracking mobile devices. I avoid cracking anything smaller than a laptop, smartphones are personal. And, every place I've worked we've had a nice contract. I felt a lot of animosity at that tool kit, until I bought a bigger better toolbag that allowed me to break down the iFixit kit. I'm not carrying the extra crap (grounding-strap anyone?), and all the good from the kit breaks down in a logical way in the new bag. The animosity is gone. I can't hate on anything Wiha yet though.Keeping that kit in any desk drawer will at least keep your glasses properly adjusted. I love tools.

Occasionally, the quality of the metal used for the bits are a bit too soft. Some are soft enough that the bit's profile can get stripped. I'm not sure if it's to protect the screw or a manufacturing issue.

Good stuff, again! Dig your philosophy/methodology. It makes sense. Especially the overland kits. What truck do you use? Headed to any expos? I appreciate your data.

I wanted to get my brother the Zai Hause collection but it's twice the price and it doesn't include the extension. I think I'll get him this instead.

Disappointed with the Klein set also. Although the driver is very nice, the proprietary bit size was a poor decision against the consumer. I have since replaced the Klein with Ifixit, but they are not without issue either. Maybe time to try the Wiha.

It looks like a winner, but twice as expensive as I was expecting, especially for Wiha. I'll keep digging.

Great video, question, did your Wiha set come with the pico-finish driver? I ordered the same kit and, on Amazon, it appeared that the driver came with the kit. It didn’t. Had to order the driver separately.

I've been pretty let down by Klein. I have that same bit set, and was kind of disappointed it is Tiawan made, and not the standard 4mm bits. I also have a few pairs of side cutters that are just poorly made. Might try to warranty them. I have the large Wiha bit set and love it.

Hey there! Have you heard about the HOTO Compressed Air Capsule? It's a powerful and compact device that offers both vacuuming and blowing capabilities. With its versatile features and reasonable price, it might be a great addition to your desktop setup. Check it out!

Hi Doc. Have you tried the Stanley 66-344M 4 in 1 pocket driver yet? I know it is not the usual class of tool you buy and nothing like the sets seen here but it is a very handy pen size precision screwdriver set.

The 4mm bits are fine, but in my experience the handle is not great (replaced with a machined aluminium one) and the bit ratchet was so unusable that it immediately got thrown in the trash (replaced by a Wera one). Also bought a Wiha 4mm to E6 adaptor and it also literally fell apart on first use. My initial Wiha experience was so disappointing that I've crossed them off the list of suppliers.
