My dad is a pharmaceutical scientist; he deals with this regularly. A placebo is a "sugar pill", or in other words, a treatment without any actual pharmaceutical effect, e.g. aspirin reducing pain by thinning the blood to allow it to flow more freely would be a pharmaceutical effect.
