That's something that always bugged me. So much of his story is left out. There are various versions of him only becoming an "ape" after he had already reached adulthood, but so many others where he has always been blue furred. Considering also that he got his education before the internet and online classes means he had to show up, in person, to those courses and classes. How did the faculty and other students react/treat him, throughout his life? How many different schools/colleges/universities has he attended? Much of the 50's - present in the Marvel Universe saw mutants being treated with utter disdain and mistrust. Did he face those prejudices during his education? Were his thesis' so good that no one could deny his graduation/degrees based on any prejudice alone? So much about him left out....

Hank is Goodest Boy! Controversial opinion though: I liked the feline secondary mutation. I have vague memories of a Grant Morrison era story where Hank thought he'd found a traumatised woman with an identical mutation to him and was doing his best to help her, then Jean looked in her mind and established she was a street cat who'd developed a feline X-gene that mutated her into a humanoid form during kitty-puberty. It was dumb as shit but it still broke my heart a bit when Hank found out.

The ball of yarn was when Joss Whedon was writing X-Men. Wolverine was brought back from his altered state in the same issue by drinking a beer. To be fair, Xavier's training was to throw everyone in a room with flamethrowers and projectile circular saw blade launchers that came out of the walls and floor and see if anyone survived, so don't discount Xavier's training, it was pretty hardcore. It was basically Rip Torn in Dodgeball type training. "If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball". Beast was also an Avenger back in the 80's so that's probably when he trained with Cap. That's where he picked up some more refined hand to hand skills. He's on par with Wolverine in terms of hand to hand combat now.
