The standard of discussion on the subject of WMD on this channel is as ever found wanting. The reality is Iraq had and used WMD between the late 1980s up till 1998 including 19,000 litres of botulinum toxin, 8,000 litres of anthrax, 2,000 litres of aflatoxins, which can cause liver fatality, Clostridium perfringens, a bacterium causing gas gangrene; and ricin. They also admitted to conducting research into cholera, salmonella, foot and mouth disease, and camelpox. There were some truly terrible experiments carried out by Iraqi 'scientists' which I won't be commenting on here. To cut a long story short after the UN inspection and recommendations which Iraq acted on between 1995 and 1998 and bombing runs by both the RAF and the USAF there were no WMD left in Iraq something that was officially declared by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. (what follows is of necessity very shortened) Unfortunately, this is where the disagreements and the 'necessary' reasons to go to war intervened. John Bolton the then Under Secretary of State pushed the intelligence services into admitting that Iraq still had the means to deliver and that they had hidden the WMD in Saddam's underground storage and his many palaces. Saddam who didn't want to lose face never corrected this and it suited Bush, doing badly in the polls, to push for a war with Iraq. Britain in the form of Blair was not convinced by the American 'evidence but after receiving reports from the Joint Intelligence Committee that Iraq had the means shortly to launch nuclear and other weapons made the decision to go to war. His reasons were published in Iraq's Weapons of Mass Destruction: The Assessment of the British Government, also known as the September Dossier and Campbell as press secretary was the guy who had to explain it all to unfortunately a very willing press (especially the Sun). The vote to go to war was supported by both the Conservative Party and large numbers of the Labour Party with the only opposition coming from about a quarter of the Labour MPs and the Liberal Democrats. That it was a wrong decision and that many people on both sides of the Atlantic and in Iraq were to blame wouldn't come out until the war in Iraq was over. In my opinion, politicians, the intelligence services MI6, CIA, and NSA all used the evidence that suited them to justify a war for which there was no legal status. It's not fair to blame Cambell as the mouthpiece though, his job was to sell the September Dossier to a mainly willing press and public (a million people did march across Europe against it). There are a lot more people with a lot more power at the time to blame - he's too easy a target and the real culprits have gotten away with it, as usual.

Inviting Campbell on for this segment was about as arrogant and ignorant as it gets. It's about the same as inviting Paula Vennells on to a discussion about the Post Office scandal whilst not inviting Alan Bates. Craig Murray who campaigned tirelessly for Assange would have been appropriate. Campbell to this day remains unrepentant about the invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan. To this day none of those military personnel that murdered the Reuters journalists and innocent Iraqi civilians have faced any sort of legal proceedings for their crimes.

Assange never should have been subjected to this. In the UK we are not protected by our government. The extradition of British citizens to the US should not be so easy to accomplish. He can also travel and give lectures at forums and universities, also give interviews and participate in numerous podcasts, giving him a very, very healthy income for the rest of his life…OR… He could decide to hook up with his old WikiLeaks buddies and continue to find whistleblowers, informants and people that are ready to hand him classified documents to be released on his platform… What path do you think Julian Assange will choose?
