Common misconception here; Gaelic and Welsh are both Celtic languages, but Welsh is not gaelic, and Gaelic is not Irish, and scots is not gaelic, kind of like how a square is a rectangle but a rectangle is not a square. Celtic split into two groups, Britonnic (obviously those related to the isle of Great Britain) and Goidelic, which stayed on the islands on the fringes. Britonnic languages include Welsh Cornish and Breton, whereas Goidelic include Scottish Gaelic, Irish Gaelic, and Manx. Now SCOTS, is completely different. That is a Germanic language very close to english and frisian. The more you know.

+Seán Leahy Not the OP, but I have a Cornish uncle who regularly sends birthday cards etc in Kernewek and we understand enough to get most of it but not details, although it's a bit tougher when spoken. Breton is a little further removed from Welsh so I understand very little spoken or written Breton. I've heard Breton and Cornish are more mututally intelligible than Welsh and Breton though, which sort of makes sense given the geographic distribution of the languages.

Irish and Welsh shared a common Celtic ancestry. Before 1700, the word “Celtic” meant nothing to the average Irish or Welsh person. But early in the 18th century, two linguists, Paul-Yves Pezron and Edward Lhuyd, discovered that the Gaelic languages and Brythonic languages were members of a single language family. They implied that the name for this group of languages should be “Celtic”, because one of these languages, Breton, was the language of the ancient Gauls. As the Gauls were Celts, it seemed reasonable to classify all of the related languages as “Celtic”.

Very beautiful language. I once went to the Porthmadog area, Welsh was predominant. Fascinating and different. On TV at least one Welsh-speaking channel. Ambiwlans and heddlu were the local emergency services.

Some words of English come from Welsh. Welsh and Cumbric (a now dead Celtic language) were the languages of what is now England before the Angles, Saxons and Jutes arrived and conquered the Celt people living there. These people spoke Germanic dialects which became one of the components of English ("Anglish"). Later Danish speaking Vikings briefly ruled England and added a Danish component to the language. Finally England was conquered by the Normans, a French speaking Viking people who added a lot to the English language.

Welsh is a close relative to Breton. The Bretons were apparently people who originally came Cornwall in England. Breton has been heavily influenced by French over recent centuries whereas Welsh was not.

Try Duolingo, it is quite difficult (I find) because the word order in sentences isn't always the same as English and the language is quite sneaky at using different first letters for some words depending on which other words you are using in the sentence.

Arthur Bugorski She says she was born in North Wales and her parents speak (or spoke) Welsh but didn't pass it on. She learnt a little bit at school but has in later life studied it at night school. For someone who learnt it later in life she speaks very fluently though she says things like 'rydwy' which I think is more formal or literary than the usual 'dwy'i' (I am), but I'm certainly no expert and I suppose it might possibly be a dialect thing. I'm not Welsh myself. I can understand it but have never spoken it (or had reason to) because I don't live there (although I can imagine trying after a couple of pints) but it is a fine language with an ancient literature.

Yep, she's speaking incredibly clearly and carefully as she learnt the language later in life. She is totally fluent but has a slightly formal way of constructing sentences, I guess similar to international English compared to a regional accent of a fluent speaker.

It didnt sound natural to me at all, very written sounding and scripted. I like hearing the mistakes and the shortenings of spoken language, and this just lacked a lot of the realness. Sounded like she was reading text, which anyone can do if taught our Wales's phonetic alphabet.

I believe she was just distinguishing between two of the forms of Gaelic: Scottish Gaelic and Irish Gaelic - there was no need for correction. "Wales" is the England language name of that country. It is "Cymru" (kum'ree) in the Welsh language. The Saxons invaders who conquered southern Britain referred to the Celts as "Waelsh' (foreigners) even though they were already there!

It's definitely not boring! I'm not a native speaker although I began learning and using it daily since age 3. It's a beautiful language too. Japanese is absolutely amazing although some verb forms are difficult lol and Welsh is absolutely beautiful indeed.
