People who can't read subtitles: I've discovered that a shocking number of people choose to be functionally illiterate most of the time because they need glasses to read, but "glasses are for dweebs". They go shopping while being completely unable to read labels or signs or anything.

I just dislike them on media in my own language, I find myself incapable of ignoring them, and read them unstoppably focusing all my attention on them, I have glasses though by the way, I'll use subs for foreign content, but hate having them there if the content is in english, I would rather go out of my way to properly set up a center channel so people can hear the dialogue properly, because the main problem with intelligibility, is due to poor speaker config.

I have no actual proof, and yet I'm dead certain that Netflix split this round of Squid Game into two seasons a few months apart so that people would keep paying for a Netflix subscription in the meantime in spite of rising prices and a decline in the quality of their offerings.

Okay I agree with Lucas. Seasons used to be way longer and these 8 episodes a season every studio is doing sucks, not only is every show being shorter but it also makes it harder to get attached to characters and sometimes just worse written

It's a really interesting thing to bring up the whole breaking bad, Better Call Saul thing. And the whole thing about nacho. Because by the time I had watched breaking bad, and then watched better call saul, I had completely forgotten that nacho was not in Breaking bad. So I was genuinely surprised when he died, and I was pretty sure I was confusing nacho with an entirely different character that was actually in breaking bad.

I'll say the same thing I do about anime if you want to watch dub watch it, if you want to watch sub do it. What I can't stand are those people that do nothing but complain about how someone else watches a show

God the one piece live action was so good and squid games both give me hope for good shows again and the dub version is great but I think kung fu hustle is great

Yeah, I have issues with subtitles. And yeah, it is because I can't read fast, and I don't like the fact I have to put full focus on the text to read it, and I basically miss out on actually paying attention to the actors, their faces and emotions. Because I'm tunnel visioning on the text.

23:08 - that reminds a bit of the anime Blue Lock where the first episode focuses on the main character, but also focuses on a second character in a way that implies said character is going to be the secondary lead, only for him to get eliminated at the end of the episode. And his exit gets framed as if he’s going to return at some point in the future (context for those that haven’t watched the anime: it’s about a bunch of high school footballers that enter into a programme designed to weed them out to leave only the best footballers, and the guy running it professes an ethos of selfishness rather than teamwork) and there’s going to be a head to head between a team the protagonist is on vs a team this guy is on, to prove which ethos is better, but thus far he hasn’t returned (and iirc, from looking at the anime’s TVtropes page, he never does).

15:45 - I’d say that’s a fair assessment; at the very least I think it’s a factor in why I watch anime dubbed, not subbed. Maybe it’s just me, but I think my brain processes the spoken word differently to the written word and it can take an extra second or whatever to register what I’ve just read vs hearing it and because subtitles duration on screen usually match the duration of what has been said fairly closely it can mean missing the end of a line.

I've never had any inclination to watch Squid Game, but I actually might now. It depends. I hate live-action Dubs with a burning passion, but I've never watched anything Asian that wasn't animated, so I don't know how distracting a language I don't even slightly comprehend will be. I usually only subtitle things in English to help my brain hear dialogue, or in other languages to learn them.

Have you guys heard of the fighting game Mugen? You probably have seen it before as that game kind of feels like arcade fighter stock footage. Considering you guys seem to have an interest in fighting games I heavily recommend you check it out as that games lore is more insane than anything ever as it is pretty much an open source fighting game. Last time I checked there are over a hundred thousand characters. My favorite part of that game is the OP character lore with people further and further escalating the dick measuring contest that is making the most OP character. The character Nuke, a literal nuke that when anything happens it explodes winning the match, is the lowest tier of OP characters. Higher on the list are characters that modify the game itself and are borderline malware. The peak is a character that is literal malware and completely insane. Mugen feels somewhat like SCP, a never ending source of insanity.

Whilst i agree with you that subs can be a bigger hurdle for some people more than others, the cost of making a quality dub is not insignificant. That's why we end up with so many bad quality dubs, which only perpetuates the war against dubs. Edit: For the record, i watched Squid Games dubbed, and i never had a problem with it. If it wasn't dubbed i might not have watched it at all.

@tanovardan Accessibility options in video games are relatively cheap, in comparison to voice acting an entire show. I'm not saying they shouldn't do it, and bad quality is usually better than nothing, but saying that every show needs to hire a full cast of voice actors for every language that might watch is a bit much.
