I’ve played this song over the years and as I’ve lived to see the Bible leave our schools, it makes me sick! I recall being in Mrs Hempstead’s 4th grade classroom when each day she would have us salute the flag repeating the pledge of Allegiance and then one student would stand up in front of the class and read a Bible verse. I had a terrible stutter and would hope she wouldn’t embarrass me but the day came and as I walked up I whispered to her to please not make me do this but she just warmly smiled and encouraged me. She gave me Psalm 23 to read and I had never heard of it so I began to read but with every other word I would stutter and then my knees also gave way so it must have looked like I was bowing! The class began laughing at me and I looked at my teacher with pleading eyes for me to stop but she gave me the most gentle and compassionate look, so I looked back down at the verses and as I read, “ Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil, for Thou art with me”. I completed the verses and realized my stuttering was gone and my knees weren’t shaking any longer! I then closed the book and was shocked as the entire class stood up from their desks and applauded me!! Mrs Hempstead came over and gave me a big hug! I never ever stuttered again after that day! Yes, these were the good old days! Now I pray for my Grandchildren to experience love, faith, charity, hope and peace in their lifetime! What good are degrees, mathematics, science, sociology, etc, if we live in fear, hatred, confusion, sin, mental and physical breakdowns, etc! It is more urgently needed to obey the golden rules and live in peace! What it all boils down to is just five words that Jesus said: “LOVE ME AND LOVE OTHERS!”

I remember in elementary school every morning praying being on the the little speaker from the office. Then the pledge of allegiance was after that. Then we got educated. Teachers went to church back then instead of gay bar's.

How sad! There was a day, when a short devotion and Bible verses were read over the P.A. System every morning. This was the way the school day began. BUT, then America removed God and His Word out of the classrooms, and out of the mouths of students and teachers. No wonder we are losing so many children through violence and through unbelief. Let's put a KJV of the Bible back on the desks of every teacher in every classroom. There is still POWER in the Word of God! We need to bring Jesus back into the lives of our children, and bring Him back into our schools.

Great melody, but lyrics are troubling and not Biblical. God/Jesus resides in the heart of every believer---- he has not left! Children in schools have every right to pray by themselves (such as before lunch) or with fellow classmates as long as it is not being led by school staff. Students can also talk to other students about the Gospel- again as long as it is not being led by school staff. I taught for 9 years and, believe me, you do not want many administrators and teachers leading religious prayer or any other Christian activity for your children. Remember, the Bible warned us about not praying like the Pharisees. It is so disappointing to me when well-meaning Christians jump on this band-wagon declaring that public prayer is a solution for problems in schools. The solution begins in the home and in our communities. If we want to blame anyone, we only have to look in the mirror for not doing our part in spreading God's word.

this is a great song....most children do not know they are allowed to pray....a moment of silence for them to pray in school or on a football field is not much to ask...seperation of church and state has gone too far!!!!!

If kids don’t know they are allowed to pray then they haven’t been brought up correctly. Of course they are allowed to pray, in silence as commanded by Jesus himself. No one is stopping them. If the schools lead them in Christian prayer it is exclusionary. then the must be lead in every religion’s version of prayer. No one asked God to leave. They just realized solely having a Christian prayer left out other faiths. Everyone can pray even in a group. It just cannot be school-led and sponsored.

Yes.... times are tough, but are they that unlike those in Jesus' time under the tyranny of Roman rule. Jesus made it clear that the path is narrow and that the Kingdom of God can be entered by those who love and obey Christ. I'm sorry, but the song's lyrics, "He wasn't there, you asked him to leave" in reference to schools is just not Biblical. Jesus Christ is present in the heart of every believer!

​@@jeffl8688 I didn't take it literally but figuratively because yes, we know that the Holy Spirit resides in every believer but the world who has banned school prayer, and most all public display of Bible verse and has made the Christians the target of hatred and scorn, so by their actions they have shown they have no desire and only hatred toward anything that proclaims Him to be the Way, the Truth and the Life BUT when disasters or when horrific acts of violence happen, God is the 1st to be blamed. So that is why this song makes sense because they deny Him and they want nothing to to do with Him but yet blame Him. Hopefully, you get what I, in my inept way, am trying to say. No, not Biblical at all, but a word picture of what the world demands and what sin has wrought. But praise God, He will never leave us, nor forsake us and one glorious day we will be with Him forevermore.
