It is an unalloyed delight to watch the youth of today enjoying the music of Yes. The ethereal vocals, the spectacular guitar and drums: most of all though the fact that the bass monster racing up and down the fretboard in a prog tornado had a streak of the dirty funk in him that just had to find its way out. I miss Chris. There was a lot to the man to miss other than just for the reasons I know of... Son, husband, father, friend and then my reasons... The consummate musician... bass player extraordinaire, harmony singer, lead singer, song writer, showman, all around great band leader and member. Each year that goes by i miss him more. He has had a huge impact on my life and his loss has made me appreciate even more what we had for all those years. His ecstatic bass playing in this song is such an incredible foundation. It sounds as fresh as the moment it was laid down all those years ago. I love you and miss you.

Siberian Khatru is the perfect fusion of classic, rock and jazz. I love classic, prog rock and fusion jazz like crazy but this song is a class of its own.

What has always impressed me about Yes is that they can reproduce these songs note for note live! Listen to the masterpiece triple live album, Yessongs, to verify that! "Siberian Khatru" closes out an ESSENTIAL album of anyone's collection. The 1972 release, Close to the Edge, contains only 3 songs and each one is PERFECT! Maybe you're ready for the title track?? I think what sent YES off into the creative stratosphere was Jon&Tony&Peter&Steve&Rick(&Bill?) being smart enough to realize that they really did need to build their sound around Chris' Industrial-Melodic Bass grooves. Sure, they were all super talented in their own rights & in other bands they might have stood out more (right Steve?), but they understood that they were creating something special when allowing Chris to be Chris in dominating their sonic output. YES: the band Chris Squire was able to put together to showcase his special talent to the music world (which included his vocal contributions)...

YES! Yes! This song is totally amazing. I first heard it way back in 1972 I think. OMG, I was in my friend's dorm room. He had AR speakers and an Advent turntable, and ... don't remember what amp. Well, I don't think digital is better than his system of long ago, and listening to this song was outstanding!

The interplay of guitar and bass between Steve Howe and Chris Squire on "America" is simply phenomenal. One of the criticisms of Yes, although I don't agree, is that the individual members can go off into their own worlds and not play together, but Howe and Squire on "America" show just how well they can they can.

60 year old white Progressive Rock Musician Here. I really respect and appreciate your reactions. For this reason I have a request for your reaction. Artist: Argent Album: Nexus Song: Music of the Spheres This is a deep cut. Very few know of this tune. But it changed my life at the age of 15. This band and song opened my musical world to Progressive Rock, to Yes and so many others. It ultimately inspired me to co-form a Progressive Rock Band. I would be forever grateful if you could do this. Lots of Keyboards! This one is out of the world too. I too was in a Marching Band playing Tenor Saxophone, I also studied Jazz......any hope..

There are so many incredible bands from the 60s, 70s, and 80s, Some that you've mentioned, include Yes, Supertramp, Led Zeppelin. But among the progressive superstars, you have Yes, ELP, King Crimson and Genesis. A great introductory song for Genesis is "A Firth of Fifth," from Steve Hacket's Genesis Revisited at Royal Albert Hall," which you can find on KZbin. Steve was the second and best known guitarist in Genesis, and this is a spectacular version of the song, and it features the late John Wetton (of King Crimson and Asia.) People will tell you to start of with "Supper's Ready," and that's their masterpiece, but to really appreciate it, you need to work your way up to it, and "A Firth of Fifth" is a great introduction to the band.

Siberia is in Russia. In Russian, "Da" means: "Yes". Towards the end of this song, they repeat the word "da" numerous times. "Da. Da-da da-da da-da (etc)". In effect, they are saying "Yes. Yes. Yes-yes yes-yes yes-yes (etc)". Pretty clever, you guys.

It's very cool watching you enjoy these great Prog classics. I've been into Yes' music for nearly 50 years and I still listen to them with a sense of wonder and amazement. If you're into cosmic music, like Close To The Edge, then I HIGHLY recommend another British Prog band, Van Der Graaf Generator. They don't feature guitars, like Yes, but instead center their compositions around dramatic vocals, heavy organs, complex jazz rock drumming and countless saxophones. The singer and principal song writer, Peter Hammill, is a bonafied genius. VDGG's music is very jarring, dark, complex and theatrical. It takes a few listens to "get" them, but once you do, you'll come to appreciate one of the finest bands in the history of modern music! Prog On!! ✌

My recommendation for the next Yes song should be Sound Chaser. It features Patrick Moraz on keyboards. He brings a more jazzier feel to the album Relayer. It's a crazy, complex song that has a great guitar solo and a keyboard solo. Check it out!

One of my favorite Yes tunes, as is the whole album. You still need to react to Close to the Edge. Musical masterpiece. One of the first riffs I learned on guitar was Siberian Khatru. A high school friend of mine, who was also a gutar player, turned me on to Yes. He would listen to them and speaking of Steve Howe say " listen to that guy" and shake his head. All phenomenal musicians.

It is wonderful to see this music being ‘discovered’ by younger generations. I bought the album in 1972 when I was 16. Back then it sounded to me like music from the future, it still does. Siberian Khatru has a sort of musical gravitas, its tempo, the use of lyrics as what some have called ‘sonic impressionism’...Most Yes ‘epics’ involve some kind of solo where Howe, Wakeman or whoever lets rip..but Khatru doesn’t have that, though they seem to find ways to show their viruosity within in short bursts..all driven along by the incredible Bill Bruford. Though it sounds complex, I love this song for how it manages to achieve complexity from simplicity. I’ve played this on bass and guitar, and both instruments’ parts are made up from a handful of simple patterns and themes, which are combined in different ways using different keys and tempos.

John McLaughlin (Guitar), Jan Hammer (Keyboards), Billy Cobham (Drums), Jerry Goodman (Violin)...That would be the "Mahavishnu Orchestra"...check out "Between Nothingness and Eternity" Live in Central Park. An amazing show for many reasons besides the impossibly great performances but the fact that it started drizzling during the beginning of the opening number and as the tune got heavier...so did the rain..what was cool was when the tune faded to the end the rain slowed...stopped..and the sun came out. Marvelous. This band is as inspiring as Yes though they are a fusion band.

Keyboardist Rick Wakeman was jamming the harpsichord along with Steve Howe. That's the keyboard you were thinking about. BTW, once you play either Close to the Edge or Gates of Delirium, you will redefine the word masterpiece. Imo... YES is the greatest. I do love Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath. My first concert was Emerson, Lake and Palmer 1977. I saw YES in 1978, 1986 and 2001. I'm 64 I saw yes in 197D7 maybe in the round and i can tell you this song and every other song is so much better live. That's why I recommend you take the time and listened to the whole yes songs compilation and then you get it. Yes was so far ahead of their time. Another one to listen to is Wishbone Ash live dates. Unbelievable music.

Zep and Yes are 2 different pillars holding up the same roof. One may be he the fore fathers of metal with one of the best rock band member ensemble ever put together pound for pound. Yes was the epitome of prog rock and high music values in rock for their time ahead of their time... top tier musicians . I saw yes in New York at the Jones Beach theater they had a full orchestra I had seats nice road dead center and they opened up close to the yard after they finished everybody still up for at least 10 minutes because we were all blown away and Stone I agree with what you said about yes absolutely phenomenal my other favorite band I hope you check out I said something before it’s Emerson Lake And Palmer tarkus And by the way when I saw you said Jones Beach theater it was September 7, 2001 wow who would’ve thought God bless you young man because I’m 67 years old and I’ve been listening to them for 51 years irruption looking mind-boggling thank you very much

Was waiting for you to hit this album, Chod! For years, Khatru was their show opener, led into by prerecorded warmup music from Stravinsky's Firebird Suite. You can hear/see this on their Yessongs live triple album. Like everyone, I encourage you to hit the rest of this album. Then you can blow the top of your head off with the Relayer album. Also can't wait for you to hit Awaken from the Going For The One disc. You're gonna have such a good time!

@@heliotropezzz333 All music is subjective. To me, Led Zeppelin can't hold a candle "musically" to YES. Led Zeppelin plays great music, but most of their music is basic blues. They just do it better than almost anyone, but the music of YES is complex, which is what Progressive Rock is all about. Sadly, the 80's killed Prog, cause bands tried to adapt instead of just keep playing what made them great. No clue why they all did that.

@@Lightmane Only the first 2 LZ albums are 'mainly blues' and even then they are a mix of blues, rock and invention. The Punk movement was basically anti prog rock and maybe pushed prog rock out in the 80s, though Pink Floyd sort of imploded on its own, as many bands do. All taste in music is subjective, I agree. Yes can't improvise live in the same way as LZ and for me their music lacks personality, personal expression and warmth. They are not such risk takers either.

@@heliotropezzz333 Yes, but Led Zep is known as a blues oriented rock band. They actually are somewhat Progressive too. The Rain Song and I'd also include Kashmir and Stairway even, along with several other tracks. Prog pushed itself out in the 80's as far as I'm concerned, but yes, Punk too

Wow, and you have so much more of YES' best compositions ahead of you! *Close To The Edge* the song is probably their best _complete_ epic creation overall. Here's a list of what I consider some of the absolute best of YES that you haven't reviewed yet (besides CTTE): *Gates of Delirium* *South Side of The Sky* *America* *Tempus Fugit* *Silent Wings of Freedom* *Sweet Dreams* *I'm Running* *Machine Messiah* Of course, all of these feature Chris Squire's amazing bass playing as a highlight, especially *America.* Enjoy!

The progressive rock giants are Emerson,Lake and Palmer, Jethro Tull, Genesis and Yes. Honorable mention would be Gentle Giant and Kansas. You should react to Tarkus,Karn Evil 9 all three movements and Pirates.

so the last album in the sequence of more and more technical albums from Yes is Relayer. The song on Relayer that plays kind of the same role on that album as Siberian Khatru does on Close to the Edge is Sound Chaser... it will blow your mind... in a good way :)

My favorite of all Yes lineups. Someone did an illustrated Yes Family Tree you can Google. 30 different lineups over the years featuring 20 different musicians. The Prog Rock Family Tree is also worth looking up and as good as any rabbit hole to explore for new content.

I don't know if anyone told you, but Jimmy Page and Robert Plant almost formed a super group with Chris Squire and Alan White. Plant left the project early because he couldn't get into it but Page hung around for a while. They were going to be called XYZ (cross Yes Zeppelin). There is a surviving set of demos from those sessions (which I have). When Steve Howe left Yes at one point Jimmy Page was approached about joining but he passed on it. I love Led Zeppelin too but in my mind Yes will always be my favorite because they have created a unique art form. There is still a version of the band out there touring and supposedly working on a new album. How many years have Zeppelin been gone? Thank you for having an open mind by the way because this band goes way, way back and I'm an old guy so I've been listening to it for about 50+ years.

If you want some more "out of the world" music, Yes keyboard player Rick Wakeman with his current band The English Rock Ensemble has a new prog album: The Red Planet. All of the tracks were inspired by geographic (aresgraphic?) features on Mars. Very timely with the landing of the Perseverance rover last week. Check out the video for "Ascraeus Mons" (a volcano). Highly recommended.

Steve Howe, guitarist, was self taught; Rick Wakeman went to music school and spent time as a part time session musician (played on Bowie recordings) before joining Yes. I don't know about Chris Squire or Bill Bruford.

Zeppelin is like a fighter jet and YES is like a luxury jet. Both are bad-ass. Just depends on your mood on a given day. (But we do tend to indulge in luxury as time goes on and we get older and wiser)
