Great review Michael! My Favorite album from my favorite band. So wonderful to finally have these demos and extra material cleaned up. They sound better than ever. The book is gorgeous. I haven’t put it down. Seen Wilco over 30x from Chicago to Paris. A terrific live set included. Well worth the wait and a steal at $270. 🎶☮️🎶

I have a 2021 pressing also from Nonesuch… probably the same remaster, and definitely pleased with it. But the box set was very tempting-however, for the same price I got the record and saw them perform it in Chicago earlier this year.

I've been a huge Wico fan from the beginning. Every time They came to my City I never missed seeing Them. Their music got me through some rough times in the 90's.Took my current Wife to see Them at Town Hall in NYC in September of 2011.Had my tickets way in advance,so glad They didn't cancel.Those shows were classic. She got me the original YHF on vinyl for my birthday in November. I didn't even have a turntable anymore. I do now. I cherish that album. Will always love Wilco.Great video.Peace to all.

This is a stunning box set. I collected mine on Friday lunchtime and have been slowly working my way through the content since then. In short: the remastering is wonderful. A beautiful, rich and warm sound to everything. The alternative versions of the LP are really good, in some cases the songs are as good as the original album itself. The LPs are nice and clean, silent and flat. The live LPs are great. The CD of the Sept 2001 radio interview and songs is a nice touch. The book is great - I’m still reading it. This is how boxsets should be.

Sky is my second favorite behind their greatest work by a mile: A Ghost is Born. Third (for me) is then Yankee. Nice to see some love for Sky! I know there is just as much worthy leftover material for a great Ghost box so hopefully that stuff will see the light of day.

I saw Wilco in New York in 2001 when they toured to promote this album. It was a strange time, but it was brilliant to hear these songs live.

Wilco was one of those bands I had on Ignore back when... money was tight, I was subsiding on a severance package and looking for employment when this was new. The few CDs I bought in '02 were Blue Note and Verve re-issues when on sale at Borders ;-) Caught a video from Mazzy this past summer and he spoke so well of this album I streamed it for the next couple of weeks and was duly impressed. My copy of the re-issue arrived this week and I'm obsessed with it - have it on repeat - kinda wish I had the boxset now! Nonesuch does a real nice job - would like to seek out their Emmy Lou Harris and Laurie Anderson releases. I did just pick up Bach Trios by Yo-Yo Ma, Chris Thile and Edgar Meyer.

I have both the original and this box. I tend to prefer the remaster. For some reason, Tweedy’s voice sounds more immediate against the backdrop of the dynamic instrumentals. Like he’s singing in the center of a storm. Great stuff indeed. Gorgeous

Glad to hear the mastering was done well. I stayed away from the mega box, got the simple LP of the album, but then got the CDs to get access to extra tracks, like Venus Stop The Train. I really love this album, but I feel Summerteeth was their true masterpiece.

Just to clarify, Sundazed only handled the original vinyl release, the CD was released by Nonesuch, which is hilarious as they were under the same WEA umbrella as Reprise, which was the original label that rejected it. Also, I love Jim O’Rouke but don’t sell Jay Bennett short. Ultimately I think this album was mainly a product of the creative tension between Bennett and Tweedy. They brought O’Rouke in toward the end of the process to just get the thing finished as the sessions and arguments were starting to drag on. Definitely recommend watching the documentary I am Trying to Break Your Heart if you haven’t seen it.

It’s a Sundazed/Nonesuch release. I think Nonesuch farmed out their vinyl releases to Sundazed at the time. Or maybe it was Tweedy and Management? The Uncle Tupelo Anthology was released on LP by Sundazed around the time of YHF as well.

@@LJMcG Right that's what I'm saying, Sundazed licensed the vinyl from whomever, probably from Nonesuch. That was pretty common in the late 90s/early 2000s back when the majors didn't care about vinyl. Here's a funny story, Beck's vinyl was released by a tiny company called Bong Load Records during that time while I was working at a record store. Bong Load were going under and to clear their stock of Midnite Vultures our store was able to get a bunch for like $3 each. I grabbed two of them for myself, but boy do I wish I had grabbed more! EDIT: Arggh, stupid multiple Google accounts! Yes, I'm the same guy as the OP, lol.

They were also pretty canny about the 3 versions reissued. The first is just the album. The second is the super deluxe that you reviewed. A third is the 'deluxe' version which has smaller book and no demos. I appreciate that they made space for the listener who wants the concerts but isn't seeking an archeological dig on the album (even if I opted to go that way myself!)

Great to hear this release is a success. I too am a big Jim O’Rourke fan - his three “pop” records on Drag City were a highlight of the 1990’s/early 21st century if you don’t have them. Bad Timing (1997), Eureka (1999) and Insignificance (2001). Will get YHF for sure.

Great video Michael and thanks for sharing your opinion on the comparison. I've seen Wilco many times, such a great live band! I have a 2008 vinyl copy I purchased when I started getting back into vinyl. It's my favorite Wilco album and as much as I love Jeff Tweedy, I truly believe Jay Bennett was a driving creative force. Check out the mini documentary on the making of it, talk about tension between Jeff and Jay, it's what got Bennet kicked out. Curious, do you have Alpha Mike Foxtrot box set? I do and if you you're a Wilco fan you need to get it.

Been a Wilco fan for decades I love this album it is one of greatest albums of the last 2 decades right up there. I really like the hd tracks version too I have a rip of the original vinyl and hd tracks is my go to. I can’t wait to listen to this new remaster. Did Bernie cut it? Who remastered it for vinyl? Tweety has been using RL for the last few releases?

There was the Sam Jones documentary released at the time when I got the original on release.. I grabbed both back then. Its a seminal piece in the history of this landmark release. Thx to the labels/champions for getting this back to fans that deserve this full story and hopefully it will create new audiences as well .

The box set is great and sounds fantastic. I compared the 2022 to the original and also to the 2011 and I am leaning towards the 2011 release. Can't go wrong with any of them. Tweedy/Wilco have the best value to quality ratio in the vinyl game over the past 10+ years.

I bought YHF when it came out and I liked it but I never got the hype from critics and fans. If they would put out such a box for A Ghost is Born, I would be on board - its by far my fav from the band, of course along with the Kicking Television live album.

Interestingly the 2LP YHF from the boxset is cut by Chris Bellman but the 2LP YHF released that is not part of the boxset is NOT cut by Chris Bellman. Just a heads up.
