Rick, Really enjoy all your videos. I use them as examples for my students at Notre Dame. Plus they are a great reference for me too. Now that I am retired from 36 years at Ludwig, I am enjoying teaching college students and also re-learning all these great snare drum solos I played when I was younger, especially during these pandemic times. They are all great building blocks materials to improve our drumming. Appreciate your video style, accurate playing and presentation. Thank you.

Love the point you made on vocabulary and how important this book was for the jazz drumming lexicon. I've read that so many of the great jazz drummers- Buddy Rich, Jo Jones, Philly Joe and others were tap dancers. I'd love to hear Wilcoxon and other drummers who grew up in the Vaudeville Era discuss the influence of tap dance on the drums and drum set.

It´s a great job because there are no good performances of this solos on youtube. Thanks a lot. For me are very good the last solos of the previous Wilcoxon’s book “The All American Drummer”, the full pagers solos (from 121 to 150) and the last solos from 132 to 150 have an interesting fact: they contain all the 26 rudiments in each solo. This don’t happens on the second book.

I'm really curious... Where did you add that one flam? There's a passage toward the end of "Heating The Rudiments" that I like to add a flam on - It feels a little empty without it.

Excellent introduction, thank you for this and the whole project. Been working this book for some time as student and teacher, it's tough love and outstanding for jazz drum kit players. Do you always recommend bigger sticks? I know Gregory Hutchenson does. Others feel use your main sticks you gig with. Thanks for your excellent conribution.
@rickdior4 жыл бұрын
When I warm up and work on my hands I use a heavier stick but not a stick with a wider diameter. This is so my grip does not widen when I am practicing. That's why I use heavier woods when I make my own sticks.

I've been doing these studies for some months, along with the 150 solos. I really suffer trying to add groove to written solos such as Wilcoxon's because I'm very minucious and perfectionist with tempo and rhythm. Is there any tips anyone could give me, or any video that help? Thanks

I understand the publisher went out of business. The catalog is apparently up for sale. The publishers' catalog includes a wide range of music. There are a number of other titles in the catalog that are of interest to drummers. It would be a great loss if that catalog does not find a new home. This happened in late 2019.

What's your thoughts on a vast majority of videos of Rolling In Rhythm being played completely straight on KZbin? Are most people missing the point that it's a book of swing solos? There's also a number playing Rhythmania that seem to completely overlook the fact it's obviously meant to swing
@rickdior4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jayne You can play the solos straight or with a slight swing. By swing I do not mean with a constant triplet feel at all tempos. The idea is to ghost the drags and rolls and interconnect the phrases so they sound smooth, not choppy. As you get faster the swing feel will dissipate as it does when you are playing very fast jazz ride cymbal patterns. A good example of this is the soloing of Philly Joe Jones. He swung some phrases in his solos and played others straight. His ability to stream together these two feels and his thorough knowledge of rudimental stickings and phrases made him an incredible soloist. It is well documented that he loved the Wilcoxen books and studied them constantly as well as teaching them to his students. So in a nutshell you can and should play these solos both ways so that you have a large technical vocabulary to turn to in all styles of music.

Regarding to the rolls, as you say, in this book, all the 7-stroke rolls are triplet based, instead 16-notes based (as are in Pratt book). Triplet based 7-stroke rolls are much more difficult than 16-note based 7-stroke rolls, because are much quicker. The fact is that in his previous book “The All American Drummer” he used a lot of 7-stroke rolls (16-note based), but he wrote them in a non standard way, he wrote them as a ruff attached to a 5-stroke roll. Some people complained about that, so Wilcoxon said: ok fuck all of you, on my next book I will supress all the 7-stroke rolls (16-note based) and all my 7-stroke rolls will be triplet based, to fuck you 😂😂
