Around 25 or 30 years ago my son came running in the house yelling "dad, come quick!". When I went outside to see what was wrong there were two baby squirrels lying under a tree that were apparently joined at the tail bone from birth. One was dead and the other was trying to drag it with him. My first thought was to euthanize the live one to stop the suffering, but my son said "please, dad, don't". In the meantime the mother came down from the tree and ran up to me chattering. Wasn't sure what to do so I told my son to go in house and get a bottle of peroxide while I got my twig clippers from the garage. There was no way I could save the tail for the live one (it wasn't flicking around so I figured the nerves, muscles and bone were attached to the dead one), so l held him pressed to the ground and snipped off the tail while my son poured the peroxide on the area cut. All the while the mother was still at my side chattering. The baby let out a yelp when the mother moved in and the two took off running. I didn't think the baby would survive but it was all I could do. Latter that summer I was sitting on my patio enjoying a beer when I noticed a grown squirrel running on top of our fence, no tail, with his butt swinging back and forth for balance. That was a good day. (lol)

Squirrels are quite destructive unless given something to keep them occupied. And they chew just about everything they get their SHARP teeth on. Their claws are pretty sharp as well. If you plan to keep a squirrel, be prepared to clean up after them when they decide to chew woodwork, drapes, rugs, etc. They can be taught NOT to chew things, but it takes an unbelievable amount of time and effort. And as someone else commented: they are INSANE when going through young adult (squirrel) hood! I have a squirrel that I rescued as a baby when his mother was hit by a car, and I love him to DEATH, but he is a rambunctious little monster at times.

Squirrels who are so free from fear to humans are deeply asking for help because they are lost and can not find home. You should the her/him and take care for it. Because it´s really needing special help. Call a animal sanctuary or a special institution for Squirrels. When you´re hiking and a squirrel just climbs up your leg, like this little one does, they are really in danger. And they take all their encourage together and ask humans for help. In the mountains, where I am from, this happens sometimes. When a storm or heavily rain causes that the baby´s get trown out of the nest. yes she/he is homeless and don´t know how to react because don´t know how to eat food, so it´s a pretty young animal and need to take to the vet and then to a special animal sanctuary. It´s showing some fear because of unknown noises and is staying close to the boy with the caro shirt. He feels comfortable with you and you should take him and give him strokes and love, because he needs you. This little one has no experience with the dangerous world we live in. So they just get as near as they can to you for getting love and care. :) So please help those little souls!

Just FYI for people who might watch this video... Squirrels don't carry rabies. Neither do opossums. Skunks and raccoons do. And baby squirrels won't bite hard enough to break the skin. It could hurt, but not life-threatening to you. In some regions, squirrels can carry Bubonic Plague and Typhus. Both are very old diseases and can be treated with anti-biotics. That's the worst they can give you. His trembling back legs show that he might have been dehydrated and/or low on calcium. Mama may have been killed and he went out looking for food. Always rehydrate a baby squirrel with Pedialyte, and then get them warm. Try to find mama if you can. If not, then warmth, hydrate, call a rehab facility. Some states have strict laws. Some states pretend to have strict laws but no money or staff to implement the laws. And a few states, you can keep the squirrel no problem. But it is a commitment...like having a Cockatoo. They need a very large cage. Daily free roaming for hours. Can be destructive and moody and may bond to only one or two people.
@realherbalism10177 жыл бұрын
Any mammal can catch rabies
@eolsunder7 жыл бұрын
yes, but many animals have natural immunities to rabies due to their biological makeup. So while rabies can be in mammals, many types of rodents and rabbits won't get rabies nor carry the disease. Small rodents like squirrls, rats, gerbils, rabbits, hares won't carry it. Only woodchucks and groundhogs don't have a resistance to the disease and can carry it. You aren't going to get rabies from most rodents or rabbits they are highly resistant to the disease, and their lifestyle doesn't usually involve them biting or being bit by animals that can carry it.
@OriginalPinkbird7 жыл бұрын
Nope. American opossums are thought to have a natural immunity. Look it up.
@JanakiBananaki7 жыл бұрын
Joel Bishop True. When I say "carry rabies" I mean to carry the disease for months without showing symptoms like skunks and raccoons can do. It is very rare for a rodent to survive an attack of a rabid predator and actually contract the disease. They have to already have a low immunity response. They can naturally fight it if they are healthy. If they do contract it, they die quickly. A healthy looking baby squirrel without injuries will have near a zero chance of having rabies. Many laws about keeping and raising squirrels in many states are based off of very old scientific assumptions that have been proven false. But it is more than okay in all states to kill and eat them.

Ah, the trust of the innocent. I used to live in the country and one winter night this baby mouse came staggering up to me while I was in bed. She was so unsteady and looked malnourished. I put my hand to the floor thinking that would scare her away. Instead she came to me. So, what could I do. I built a little place for her to live in an old blueberry container (I named her Blueberry) and basically fed her, etc, until her strength returned and the weather got better. I let her go. She didn't seem eager to leave at first but did eventually get curious enough to do so. Sometimes they get desperate enough to take a chance.

Thanks for that. I learned my lesson long ago when out in the Denver area visiting my cousin. They claimed to have a strange large toad in their garden. It was dark when we pulled up the the property and someone yelled, 'There it is!' I jumped out and caught it only to have it copiously excrete on me twice. I never did get it into the light to determine what it was. Once back in the car, my cousin said I should wash myself off as soon as possible. I agreed but shortly afterward recall rubbing my itchy eye. The next day I felt odd and lethargic. I was not able to drive home. Long story short --- I ended up in the hospital two days later. The doctors never quite figured out what it was except I began bleeding internally and was an hour away from death by the time I made it in. I am a lot more careful these days. I still trun no animal away - I just take a lot more precautions.

Kaylee is right. Because most squirrels are very afraid of humans there must be something wrong when they get this close to humans. Baby squirrels normaly dont do that.. But when they lost their mother or are starving because of any other reason, they tend to do that. Many organisations are informing that in spring/early summer events like this can occure and you should not put the babys back but rescue them and take them to a shelter.

I read that if you find a baby out on its own, chances are it's just learning to forage on its own and likely knows exactly where home is but on the off chance it doesn't you playing with it, keeping it entertained was really good of you and filming was really good for us.

When I was a tween I found a young squirrel at the foot of a tree and it seemed his mother abandoned him, ended up convincing my momma let me adopt him, we had him for about a year I named him Bender and he was awesome so friendly and fun. He pooped CONSTANTLY but they are just little poop circles that are easy to clean. We released him into the wild at a park and I never seen him again :(

Aww what a sweet furbaby. Thank you for being so kind to an animal in need. Just FYI though, cashews aren't good for squirrels to eat. Their phosphorous content can be toxic to them and can cause severe calcium loss. Hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, walnuts, pecans, and pistachios are best to give them.

Poor little guy he was coming up to you looking for food as something has happened to mom and he is now all alone. He would need to drink Esbilac puppy formula with Probiotics, feed 5-7% of his body weight every 5 hours..... later you can add in a good quality squirrel block, then vegetables, fruits and nuts.

TravelingDirector : This little one seemed to be a bit wobbly on it's feet. It may have been ILL. The best thing to have done, was to call your state's environmental conservation department. They would have given you a list, with all the information as to how to alert government licensed wild life rehabilitators. Thank You so much for your kindness. 👼😘👍💖 P.S. Until help arrived, perhaps especially formulated nutritious "kitten" formula purchased at your local pet store, accompanied with a kitten baby bottle would have helped tremendously. BLESSINGS ! 😇

I fed a squirrel for a couple years, it got to the point where at the same time everyday he would scratch at our door, if we were outside he would come and hang out and climb up on us. One day after getting home from work, I was getting out of the shower, I heard frantic scratching at the front door. Much louder and intense than what the squirrel did. I went down there opened the door, and whatever it was was gone. But I never seen him again:( I still wonder if that was him scratching that day and that maybe he needed help.

Adi Adrian it must be the environment. I noticed that squirrels by my family’s house are typically scared to come around us and I think its because our outdoor cat is always hunting them so they see everyone as a predator. But on my college campus squirrels will run across your shoes while your at the park and I think it’s because they feel safer with no natural predators nearby

When I was a kid there was a neighborhood squirrel, some of us used to feed it. It would actually crawl up on my dad's lap and take nuts from him, and I petted it a few times. Another neighbor used to feed him too. One day he knocked on the neighbor's door, she wound up letting him in (not realizing it was the squirrel) and it went into the kitchen and began looking for nuts! She gently chased him out with a broom. Pretty funny!

I can't quite hear it but at 3:33 I think the guy is saying something about "The Mama" - as in Mama Squirrel I assume? because that would explain it. He then goes on to say "I never ever petted" - But that doesn't matter, it just goes to demonstrate how mammals can learn to be fearless by simply *_watching_* how their parents react just as we humans can become phobic of things by watching how our nutcase human parents respond to such things as spiders when we are kids.
