It’s such a pity that these wild type of Bettas isn’t more seen in the trade. It’s the fancy Bettas that is to be found in the stores. Well, here in Denmark at least. So far the only Betta I’ve found is the Betta imbellis, which I obviously bought four of to take home. They’re still in the growing state, but hopefully there should be a pair out of them. Fingers crossed.

I bought a betta from a pet store that looks to be a wild type. He's so thin and pale though, that I think it's going to take time for him to get his color fully back and see what type he is. I think he may be an imbellis but not sure.

@emilythestorier44282 жыл бұрын
@@quaaquatics9416 yup! he's definitely an imbellis! within a week his color started coming back and after three weeks he looked incredible. His fins are a bright red and indigo and his body glitters with teal scales. He turned out far better than I could have imagined! So happy for the little guy. He's very active and lives in a 5 gal with some shimp.

So Can all of these fish cross breed
@Someone-zx7xd2 жыл бұрын
But what did those bettas used for gambling in Thailand evolve from? Were they those fish that were just picked from the wild or did they go through a long course of evolution and conditioned for fighting? When did plakats diverge from wild bettas?
@NovitaListyani2 жыл бұрын
They went through selective breeding too, rationally once you have a strong fish, and assuming you know how to breed Bettas, most likely you breed them, as for when, if historical records are to use, maybe about 150++ years ago selective breeding started in South East Asia. The fancy Bettas were started in the west in the 19th century ( Introduced in France around 1890+), so relatively not very far from then. This video is based on genetic analysis of the fish and researchers found out that the time range should be between 1000 to 10000 with 4000 quoted as most likely.
@Someone-zx7xd2 жыл бұрын
@@NovitaListyani Thanks for the quick response. So, do you mean that today's fighting bettas diverged from the wild population around 4000 years ago and have been used for fighting since 150+ years ago?
@TedH71 Жыл бұрын
@@Someone-zx7xd people started keeping bettas around 1 thousand years ago but weren't serious about it until the 1800s when people realized they could make money from fighting fish. The betta types you see in the pet stores are 100% hybrids. The common betta is considered to be a combination of 3 species.

Hope wild betas get popular enough to get humanely mass produced. It's not looking good though cause COVID shut down the supply lines and they're already exotic betta imbellis with dark blue. That exotic one I want but it's probably not good for the ecosystem.

Can you also house betta imbellis in one tank?
@NovitaListyani2 жыл бұрын
No, unless they grow up together, even with that condition met, you still need a very big aquarium with enough plants and other hiding places for the weak ones to hide.
@KarlCalica2 жыл бұрын
@@NovitaListyani thank you for clarifying it. i really though we can keep them in a community tank since most of competitions requires pair wild betta
@NovitaListyani2 жыл бұрын
Imbellis Bettas, while relatively smaller, are actually very aggressive, so extra care must be provided if you want to put them together. Dennisyongi Bettas, Simorum Bettas are more suitable for single species tank.

Actually the Betta that you see in the pet store trade is a combination of 3 betta species. Virtually all of them are hybrids in the pet trade so breeding pure wild ones and keep the babies separate from other betta species is a good way to keep them going.

At least domestication is better than death. The original cows went extinct now we just have domestic cows.
@kenjiro26762 жыл бұрын
5:31 YES! So many hybrids are mistakenly sold as the wild pure species, when in fact they are hybrids. This is ruining the hobby and messing up the gene pool for people looking for pure species. I think wild lines can be preserved in captivity if we don't inbreed them too much, making sure to outcross them often when breeding, and advocating for outcrossing fish to reduce inbreeding as much as possible. If more people do this, they will remain healthy for the long run, often times people capitalize and exploit their resistance to inbreeding, so they opt to inbreed their fish by breeding sibling pairs for generations. I sincerely people don't mess this up this time.
