WILD BROWN TROUT ON THE DRY FLY (Fly fishing Big Green River, Wisconsin Driftless)

They say first impressions are everything.. If that is the case, this river made a lasting one! For my first time ever fishing the Big Green River here in the Wisconsin Driftless Region, I sure did well! My buddy Matt and I made our way south as the sun was just starting to peak over the hills! The morning splendor was in full effect as the vibrant green of the pastures were being amplified. I set my sights upstream and he walked down. The morning consisted of some absolutely amazing dry fly action book ended by two really great wild brown trout on the Meat Whistle. The Dunn emerger pattern I was using was right on the money. They were so keyed in on what I assume would be a Blue Wing Olive (BWO) hatch. I could see them shoot up from the crystal clear water and attack my dry fly like they were mad at it! As I snaked my way up the pasture I was really able to find a lot of success, picking really nice sized brown trout from each hole. I would say this is by far my best morning on any Driftless Region river I have had this far. Both the quality and the quantity of fish were right there! Not to mention they were mostly on the dry! How fun! Get out and enjoy the Driftless Spring before the Summer vegetation makes things a little more squirrely!

That’s a great stream. I’ve only fished it twice, both times with a guide. First time we fished with yellow and red roll on indicators with a scud and a small caddis pupa. He set the stage indicators up high and when they turned in the current to slowly retrieve them and man we caught plenty of fish. Next time the water was high and we slayed them on San Juan worms. In my opinion this is on of the best streams in the state. Yes, you’re right this stream is very popular but the fishing holds up.

Been watching for awhile but finally just got that sub button for whatever reason. I fish the big green often. Would be awesome to fish together sometime man. I’m pretty dialed on the steelhead too if you ever wanted to give that a shot on the fly. Tight lines!

@@FLYALLSZN Oh dude it's so much fun on a 7 or 8wt. They will be running into the tribs to spawn beginning in March through early May. You can catch them pre-spawn in March but also most everyone fishes for them when they are spawning since they don't naturally reproduce in Wisconsin anyway (Michigan is a different story). I've taken a few trips to Steelhead Alley in Ohio and fished the tribs there as well -- a few months ago I had a colored up buck steelie take me 300 yards downstream before I finally landed it -- had that Orvis Hydros reel just burnin! Definitely enjoy watching your videos and love your energy man -- seriously let me know if you'd ever like to fish, I'm actually headed to the Big Green this Saturday -- I went last Sunday and got like 5 or 6 but it was slowwwww. Never warmed up past 24 degrees. - Jake
