Fly fishing brown trout in small brown trout streams can be exciting and fun. Brown trout, of course, can also be challenging, especially when conditions are tough. In this video we head out and specifically look for brown trout first feeding on egg laying caddisflies before moving into heavily treed and shaded reaches of the stream in search of one or two nice brown trout rising in heavy cover. The tactics we share to find and fly fish brown trout in this video are how we naturally find and fly fish for brown trout in small to mid-sized brown trout streams.

If that doesn’t put a smile on a fly fisherman’s face I don’t know what will. I happened to see your appearance on the New fly fisher , I was impressed then even more so now. So glad I stumbled in to your channel, just beautiful photography and love the enthusiasm. Pretty much exactly how we fish the big wild trout streams of Central Pennsylvania, except bigger water and usually can only find fish when they rise other than years of knowledge. Really hunting as much as fishing, can’t tell you how much I enjoy the videos, rock on and keep them coming, Thanks!!👍👍

Thanks for sharing your appreciation:) It does encourage us in what we do. Sounds like you go about your fly fishing in PA in a similar hunting style fashion. When you do find that one interesting trout, it's so engaging for the entire experience of it all. Hope your time on the water is great this season.

Oh I forgot to comment on the wildlife at the beginning! Loved the birds and moose chomping! ❤️ And I’m so glad Dave got that fish the second time! I got to remember to skitter caddis.

Hey yes! That moose moment on camera for me (AJ) was one I won't forget any time soon. Seriously special:) The lesson I re-learned that day is always to listen to your gut. It's so often right. Had I not taken our camera one day when out on a "just exercise" hike, we never would have captured the moose and it's not every day you run into them chomping down so determinedly on weeds under water. 😍😍 Oh, the skitter...be sure to try it. I hear trout love it;)

Some wonderful footage there guys the last few minutes of take & miss with the fly pulling out of the browns mouth then the feeding & finally the take and set with great pinpoint casting was very enjoyable . Thanks Dizzy

Great video as usual. The gear you describe differs from what I typically use on most of the rivers I fish here in the UK, which I find interesting but not entirely surprising. My "home" rivers are chalk streams, that are usually gin clear and heavily fished, especially in May - July. The fish tend to be leader shy and spooky and in most cases, local rules state single fly only (no dry / dropper rigs). Wading is often prohibited. With that in mind, my dry fly setup is typically a split cane rod, 8ft - 8ft 9in, 4 - 5 wt, (7ft 3 - 4wt on very small streams), with an 8ft - 12ft furled leader tapered to 5x plus a further 3 - 4 feet of 6x or 7x tippet. For nymphing, I prefer a 10ft 4 - 5wt rod, a 9 - 12ft nylon leader tapered to 5x plus a further 3 - 4 feet of 6x or 7x tippet. I use a piece of poly yarn as an indicator.

Incredible casting skills to get into that fish, AJ! i'm wondering how I use a 13ft leader to tippet settup when fishing dries, when I am typically only 10-15 feet from the rising fish I can see? Should I back up away from the fish if there's room and use the m longer leader if I'm not getting any takes?

Hi Alan, You can still cast if you're under that 13 ft length away from the fish. All you're looking to do is have one solid stop on your single back cast to ensure your fly extends behind you and then come forward and place the fly on the water in front of you. You won't feel much in the rod because it's all leader, especially if you're using a very small mayfly versus a more wind-resistant bushy dry or foam pattern. You could also decide that a bow and arrow cast is best if you're only a rod length away. If the riser doesn't accept your fly, they may just not want the fly you're using and changing up is the ticket.

I have the same orvis pack. How do you retrieve and reinsert the net. Almost feel like that feature of the bag is impossible

The net slides in fairly easily and the opening at the base is wide enough to allow a thicker handle to slide through. Longer handles are definitely more cumbersome which is why we use shorter handled nets. We stepped away from using that pack because of the thin waist straps that cut into our guts and lack of hip support/padding that places all the weight on the shoulders.

how do you get those clear rises of fishing on a blue bird/sunny day? I have experienced glare and grain in my shots? I have tried to use a polarized lens but does not help. Anything helps! Great videos as always been watching these videos for years!

TIME. We take a lot of time to examine things, to find the fish, to slowly move into the best position, to take the time to wait for the fish to do its thing. If you spend an hour with a fish and let it do its thing while slowly moving about to get into the best position, you can begin filming in some cases :) The key is to find the position that avoids glare and allows you to do what you want while the fish does its thing. And that.... time.

Not sure what made you think we were tired. This is the water we love, so we were both were pretty into each moment that arose this day. However, the heat of the day maybe made us seem this way at a few points.
