The gallivanting days are over for wild Bulls who have been roaming through East Galway.
It took nine days and 30 local people to round up and pen the 9 bulls and 14 other cattle which have been roaming through east Galway for seven or eight years.
For years they raged out of control in the hills above Loughrea.
The runaway bulls belong to local farmer Martin Kelly who admits he is unable to control them. Kilnadeema farmer Bob Callanan recalls the many dangers the bulls have posed to their cows over the years.
Officials from the Department of Agriculture did nothing to solve the matter, eventually deciding to bring in the army to shoot the animals. It was at this point the local people got together to stop this action from going ahead.
A local politician stood forward to take on the role of a latter day sheriff.
Local councillor Michael Regan directed the volunteers involved with rounding up the wild bulls and other cattle. As well as helping with the roundup, local people also provided transportation to bring the animals to a nearby farmer’s slatted shed.
The herd of 25 bulls, cows and calves has an estimated value of 25,000 euro. The intention now is to sell the herd and Martin Kelly is happy to be compensated. He plans to start again with some tamer cattle.
