One of the best mini-expeditions yet. Definitely picked a good day weatherwise. Great curry with wholesome fresh ingredients (washed down by a top Burgundy, of course) and topped off by an excellent full english in the morning. You certainly know how to camp in style, Sir.

Super stuff, Tweedy - don't those Dartmoor skies look great! I'm going to have to make more use of Okehampton station, especially after seeing that fry-up - it must have been amazing after a night on the hills. Will make sure I catch you next time you're down this way!

As a trail runner on Dartmoor we just go straight through the mud and water it soon squelches out or the warm feet warm up the wet socks either way its par for the coarse. No point in waterproof/gtx trainers as most puddles are deeper than ankle height on Dartmoor. Nice video btw

Thanks Alan! I'm generally quite a rational minded / scientific sort of person, but a place can give off a sort of atmosphere. There have been times in the past when I've been considering a spot to camp and it just didn't feel right somehow. Whereas this time the stone circle didn't give off any such vibe - just a very peaceful spot with lovely views. Although I did hear a couple of weird noises in the night - maybe just the wind? So anyway if indeed this is some kind of demonic portal then I suspect that aspect of it is currently closed for maintenance.

Thanks Tony, yes it's a spectacular part of the world - I'm envious you have all that on your doorstep! I was slightly surprised by the OS map coverage of Dartmoor, I guess it's almost all open access land so on some level it's not so important to know exactly where the footpaths are - you don't have to worry so much about accidentally being somewhere you shouldn't be. ...but if you've got distance to cover it is generally much easier to follow an established path! Especially where there are streams to cross, or boggy areas - in general a well trodden path is going to provide an easier route across that terrain. ...but maybe finding your own paths and getting a bit lost is all part of the joy of it!

Thanks WC21! Yes Dartmoor is glorious, I feel like I don't get there enough either. Plenty of ancient history there too! Although I think you're more interested in the Roman era perhaps? I don't remember hearing much about Roman involvement on the moor, but they must have had at least some interest given the natural resources (tin etc)...?

@@tweedyoutdoors very little is known about Roman activity beyond Exeter - it’s almost as if they saw it as another country and left it alone! I think they do find Roman pots from time to time, but they could have been trading. Who knows! I’m planning some stone circle “content” once I’ve had my fill with the Romans, so you’ve definitely put Dartmoor on the radar. It really looks stunning in this video.

I'm terrible at that sort of thing! I tend to focus on frivolous things like where the nicest view would be when I open the door and don't give nearly enough consideration to weather conditions etc. Anyway it held up fine on this occasion. Unsurprisingly as an ultralight tent it definitely isn't extremely robust and I wouldn't consider going out with it if the forecast was for strong winds, or even very heavy rain. However I think it does at least slightly benefit from the wind resistance point of view from being very low to the ground. Even if pitched in the wrong direction!
@thewestonfront
@thewestonfront Жыл бұрын
@@tweedyoutdoors The view is important. I'll compromise my pitch to get the view if the weather is only mild to moderate - after all isn't the view a significant part of why we are out there?

The nine maidens is also known as the seventeen brothers, it is a burial cairn rather than an actual circle. The embankment you followed looks to me like a reave, a Bronze Age boundary, the fact it went to a settlement would endorse that somewhat, although it could be later. I'm going to have to investigate that one.

Yes I did get a bit confused about the name there! I think it's just marked as "Nine Stones" on the OS map, but wikipedia calls it "Nine Maidens" and also gives the alternative name "Seventeen Brothers".

Thankyou Tweedy outdoors for a great video. Weather was so still when you arrived very unusual for dartmoor ! Food looked good can I ask where you source your wine from ? @tweedyoutdoors
@tweedyoutdoors Жыл бұрын
Thanks Richard! Yes I agree the still weather on Dartmoor felt very unusual to me too. Obviously it couldn't possibly last for the entire time I was there but I felt very grateful to have those few hours of calm and warmth considering the time of year. As for wine sourcing, I spend a ridiculous amount of time hunting around for decent Burgundy at (comparatively) reasonable prices and end up shopping absolutely all over the place! That particular bottle was from Huntsworth Wine (huntsworthwine.co.uk), but I only very recently discovered them and have so far only shopped there once. Other places I have shopped at more than once include Fingal Rock (pinotnoir.co.uk), Hand Picked Burgundy (hpb-wines.com), Berry Bros & Rudd (bbr.com) and Seckford (seckfordwines.co.uk). More broadly I find wine-searcher.com very good for finding Burgundy "bargains", but again it's all relative - let's be honest Burgundy is pretty much all crazily overpriced, and the market relies on idiots like me being prepared to shell out way over the odds compared to just about every other wine region on the planet... but I can't help it, I absolutely love the stuff!
@tweedyoutdoors
@tweedyoutdoors Жыл бұрын
If I were to just suggest just one wine merchant in the UK for really excellent value for money Burgundy it would be Tom at Fingal Rock (pinotnoir.co.uk). Two producers he particularly champions are Domaine Gachot-Monot and Domaine Philippe Gavignet. Both have some really good wines, but I think Gavignet in particular can be absolutely outstanding. The Bourgogne Hautes Cotes de Nuits "Clos des Dames Huguettes" from Gavignet is around the £25 mark and in a good year can be really great. Gavignet's Nuits St Georges "Vielles Vignes" typically sells for £10 or so more than that, but that's still not really beyond the pale by Burgundy standards and it is frankly obscenely good, especially the 2017. Incredible fruit expression and purity, silky smooth, very concentrated and an absolute joy to drink. I'm not sure now why I am sharing this information as I'm sure his stocks are quite limited! 😁

Excellent video. One small thing though. The purple area is only part of the rules, the list of places where camping is not allowed includes archaeological sites which I believe includes stone circles even if they are within the purple zones .
@tweedyoutdoors
@tweedyoutdoors Жыл бұрын
There are some areas around the edges of the wild camping map where it appears a wide berth has been given to some specific stone circles - such as Scorhill and The Grey Wethers near Sittaford Tor... And there are one or two "islands" of exclusion on the map, surrounded on all sides by areas where wild camping is permitted (although I suspect those are more down to ownership issues rather than areas of historical importance). However White Moor Stone Circle is not one of those islands, it's very much in the purple! I searched just now and couldn't find any additional rules/regulations which said camping in purple areas on the map is not allowed if it's a site like a stone circle - surely this would be marked as another one of those "islands" if that were the case?
