Dear Hector, Cooked an amazing meal in the middle of a gorse bush and had a marvellous Burgandy to accompany it. Channel is growing all the time and am building up a loyal army of gastronaut fans! 👍🏻

I love that Seán! Was Hector a real person or just made up for those postcard skits?

@@tweedyoutdoors I read his (first) autobiography back around 2003 “From the frying pan into the fire” and from memory Hector and his wife were a couple that Floyd met when he was living on his boat in France. I seem to remember him saying they were a jovial couple that enjoyed a few slurps - i believe he said they were “permanently pis**d!” They seem to have been a wealthy retired couple and I think they must have paid for a few of Floyd’s meal/drinks bills (which may have been astronomical) 😂

@@Oscartherescuedog thanks I had always wondered about that! Nice to know there is (or I guess by now _was_) a real Hector somewhere!

Nice lunch. Many years ago my wife and myself (it was the summer), we went at dawn to the local park. Well before the e rangers had opened it up. When the ranger drove in we were sat there in the park, table chairs and a dual burner Coleman suitcase petrol stove cooking a full English whilst drinking fresh coffee (a bit early for wine! lol). The look on his face was priceless! lol

Not a camping video, not a wine video, and definitely not a cooking video (sorry Tweedy)😂. Yet, definitely works! Absolutely delightful!🎉

Switch on KZbin and the first recommendation is yet again a Tweedy Outdoor video. Was I disappointed, hell no. Another entertaining treat. Thank you for keeping alive the spirit of Keith Floyd. He would be delighted and no doubt be sitting a glass of wine beside you. 🍷🍷👍😀

Hi Tweedy, very nice simple and yummy meal. I will try that. Like your drills in finding a nice sheltered spot out of the wind. I will provide you my secret recipie 🇬🇧 🇳🇿. (Ok Red Neck Pizza. Fry pita bread in butter, flip it, let the grease soak in and add a slice of cheese and some sliced salami on the uncooked side - serve once cheese has melted. One of my go to outdoor cuisines). Cheers Dave

Watching a new video from you in the morning with my coffee always puts a smile on my face. What a lovely spot for a lunch which by the way looked absolutely delicious. Cheers to the guy in the Tweed Suit from your fan across the pond! 🎩🍾🍷💜

Thanks Jamie! Yes it was a really nice spot to sit for a while, I miss that gorse bush now! Also very pleased with how the food came out - it's a simple classic British dish, a pub staple, but I honestly prefer that sort of thing to the kind of food you find in Michelin starred fine dining restaurants.

That food looked really good and would work with veggie sausages. First time I’ve felt hungry watching one of these! Great views, scenery and history too. I think this area is long overdue a revisit.

They were veggie sausages! Yes I think the Vale of Pewsey / Pewsey Downs has some lovely scenery, all the better for normally being more or less deserted whenever I've been there. Plus there and the broader area around it is so densely packed with ancient history, you're literally tripping over megaliths, barrows and linear earthworks wherever you go. An embarrassment of ditches, you might say.

That looked amazing. We cannot buy gravy granules in Canada. I believe that they are for sale in 'British shops' where groceries cost the same as buying a car.

Good for you, to have curiosity and appreciation of being outdoors, to be as a kid again and not ruled by schedules, time and being productive! ... I bless your tweeds and wish you the best of good health and continuing energy. Nature is so wonderfully fulfilling, recuperative, 500k years and here we are stuck in houses wasting our lives. Whoops, I must award minus points fr instant mash, real pots take little heat on an enclosed vessel; fried pots are exc out of doors as you know already. I always fry with olive oil. Wow outdoor sound of 'sizzling' always is appealing. To obtain a 'good' sausage is not easy, supermarkets are near zero for this. Also, farmers often grub out gorse when in fact it is valuable shelter for sheep and the hare in the worst of winter weather. btw you need a cover for your pan, cooks so much quicker/ better / effectively; nothing can cook properly uncovered. However, I appreciate your enthusiasm and fun for all of this!
@tweedyoutdoors

Thanks Zebedee! Yes instant mash is definitely a bit lazy but very convenient for outdoor cooking, and the "Idahoan" one tastes better than I expected. I think I'd worry about running out of gas if I had to boil potatoes for 20 minutes or whatever they take from scratch! Of course that wouldn't be a concern if I could just cook on a fire instead, given that an unlimited supply of fuel would then be lying around all over the place, but of course that's generally frowned upon almost everywhere. I completely agree, living in houses feels like a step backwards in many ways...

@@tweedyoutdoors Actually I must confess that sometimes / often here at the hacienda I use tinned potatos out of laziness!! I enjoy them too. I find at the supermarket there can be often pots that are hell to cook, turn to mush etc if not guessed exactly right at cooking time. Widower here so have had to teach myself, I usually go for the 'idiot-proof' salad potato. Pls, try a batch of salad potato at 15mins on low heat in a covered vessel, its what I do every day (indoors) they are mashable too. Idea, my two stand-by's right now are fresh ground black pepper and dried thyme. I also am keen on gravy granules, v useful. Bread to mop it up too ... well done exc vid. ps with my usual lunchtime steak mince casserole I reheat yesterdays boiled potato in my benchtop oven, the flavour being enhanced.

Thanks Tommy! When I watch these videos back I'm often surprised by how enthusiastic I come across, when actually in normal day-to-day life I'm often quite a cynical sort of person, and increasingly turning into a grumpy old man! I think it must at least partly be the magic of being outdoors and not having to deal with the rest of day-to-day life for a while which causes these outbursts of ardour.

As you often say, "even though I say so myself" it came out surprisingly well. Although I suspect you'd rather not have used the gravy granules! They were very practical for outdoor cooking though... Camping stoves seem to have a habit of burning everything a bit if you try to fry anything on them but this is one dish where that's actually an advantage!

Bangers 'n mash comes a very close second to pie 'n mash, but I've yet to find a way of re-heating a decent pie on the trail. Having saved some dosh on the Burgundy, you could have bought some premium sausages, though. 😋😋

Yes recreating something like an oven outdoors is a bit of a challenge! I've seen some videos where people use a larger billy can on its side as a sort of oven, with a small shelf inserted to lift whatever you're baking off the bottom so it doesn't just burn - but normally this has always been with hot coals from a fire rather than on a gas stove. Also recently Dan from Camplife Bushcraft made a small pizza oven setup with a Trangia - again it relies on something to lift the thing being baked off the bottom: I think he it was partly down to nesting pans inside other pans, possibly also with some scrunched up balls of aluminium foil IIRC. I'm sure it's possible! ...but frying sausages is definitely a lot more straightforward!
