New to the channel, great videos thanks for sharing. Really like black Tor, approached from Belstone when I stopped there. Good cover behind the rocks and great views down on the edge of Dartmoor👍

I always like the warm atmosphere that a set of lights and a little radio creates in camping videos. At times the silence and darkness can be a small trigger of anxiety for me so this is certainly something I'm going to look into adding to my own camping adventures.
@rorymchenry3737 ай бұрын
Yes I’m a strong believer in trying to make my camping experience as ‘home like’ as possible, a little radio and a set of lights is a very lightweight addition and makes a big difference!

Hi Rory, I love your channel and I hope that you don't mind more thoughts. I have a Jetboil and if I am trying to save weight on a multiday trek, I boil 1 lire of water-half goes into my dehydrated meal and the other half goes into a hot drink . I guess that I am a 'bit of a lightweight' when it comes to trekking but like you, I always have a bottle of wine with me!
@rorymchenry3738 ай бұрын
@@paulbendall6229 I’m always happy for more thoughts on this! I’ve just been on a multiday hike but it was very last minute so didn’t have time to prepare any dehydrated meals but will be doing some more soon and might look at a ‘complete meal’ type option that requires zero prep and just boiling water. I’ve recently discovered red wine in a can which could be a game changer!

Hi Rory, good to see you back camping with a too heavy pack (as usual). That was pretty intense overnight weather, glad you survived. The meals, strikes me that whereas you are interested in food (I'm impressed by the thought that goes into your meals), not sure the average camper putting up a tent in the howling wind is so invested. But, what you may find as a niche market is those who go "glamping". If you marketed the product towards those who hire the yurts/pods (so people who at the end of the day have somewhere comfortable, dry and warm) you could find a market. This is entirely from my prospective, I like the idea of camping but I don't have anything like the fortitude or physicality to actually do it. But I would enjoy the "experience" of opening a bag, rehydrating the food (just like a real backpacker) and it tasting good. Kind of "faux" camping, not the real thing but the fun part, ooh new foods and a different way of "cooking". And as a woman/wife/mother, do you know how often a self catering trip turns into "so I'm shopping and cooking again then, that'll be a holiday (rolls eyes)"?
@rorymchenry3739 ай бұрын
Ha yes point taken regarding self catering ‘holidays’! And yes there definitely could be a market for people ‘glamping’. I’ve stayed in a few pods and similar things and certainly wouldn’t want to just eat the standard dehydrated camping food. There’s actually quite a good possible place to sell the sort of meals I’m working on - campsites that have pods etc… Funnily enough a friend of mine who is a mother of two said she’d be interested in these sorts of meals for easily feeding her kids at home! Maybe I should be looking at that market too?
@excession30769 ай бұрын
@@rorymchenry373 A start might be to sell the meals via this website. Watch the video, try the food. See if there is any interest. Many YT creators have some kind of "shop" attached with a link in the description and sell their merch online.

Radio4 Banging!!🤣 enjoyed the video... Try some Real Turmat... creamy cod curry, pulled pork... actually very good for freeze dried, but not cheap. That saying, we are off next month on the Hebridean way... bringing the Firemaple skillet and sunflower cooker. Intend doing some upside pizzas among other stuff, when we stumble across a co-op or other on route. We have a dozen Turmat dried meals but these will be for days we can't resupply.

It's perfectly acceptable to a stay in your tent during a lightning storm. Risk very low. It's lower than your standing height, isn't an easy conductor and provides shelter from wind and rain.

Loved your Dartmoor adventure!! I think I would prefer Rice and Dal mixed just for ease of use. I would definitely buy some of your home made meals as like you I feel the food available is very similar and dull. There is definitely a gap in the market like you said. I’m aiming to walk the Two Moors Way in the summer ! Have you thought about a 2 person option if you’re hiking with someone else to save on packaging. Keep up the good work!!

Up north weathertorn blokes men eat steaks slurped with IPA's, whereas down south more wholesome real chaps eat vegan dal washed down with apple crumble and Old Speckled Hen! I think all you need to do is to invent the tasty dehydrated boil-in-the-bag ribeye! Or perhaps not... I love a good dal and apple crumble! Good luck with your endeavours! 👍👍👍

Great vid. Sign me up for your dehydrated meals! Guess the mass market ones are generic ‘cos price and shelf life. Surely there’s a market for people who are happy to pay a bit more for a ‘luxury’ proper-nice dehy meal. Rice on the side! (Although, could you even offer rice in a separate packet inside the main package, which can be added to the main meal to cook ‘as one’ if desired? When it’s proper cold the vast majority of folk don’t necessarily want the extra step of doing it separately even if they think they do…)
@rorymchenry3739 ай бұрын
Thankyou! Yeah I was thinking something like that with a rice sachet inside the main packet to give you the option - I think a lot of the problem is that these sorts of meals are designed to last years when really they only need to last a matter of weeks (or the length of a trip). I will be working on this idea so stay tuned!

Everything I have tried (no matter how much I pay) in the dehydrated camping food sector tastes very similar: Pot Noodley, too much sodium, and like what a prepper would keep in their basement. Is it to extend shelf life, or to hit a price point, I don't know. BTW I would prefer separate rice for a premium product. Good luck. Who came up with 'Summit To Eat' ? I blame the schools.
@rorymchenry3739 ай бұрын
I think it’s probably a combination of both hitting a price point and extending shelf life. Personally I’d rather have something that only lasts a few weeks or long enough to get me through a trip (as opposed to the multiple years usually offered) if it tastes good! Unfortunately I think the pepper market is huge and so a lot of these companies cater to their super long term needs… glad you like the rice on the side idea… thanks for watching!
