Wild Camping in bad weather, mistakes were made. I have to admit I felt a little rusty on this attempted wild camp. Not putting enough preparation into making a fire and checking my equipment (especially lighters) are in working order. I'll be back to do it properly on the next one!
Hope you enjoy!

Never Don’t Give up. I live my life by that rule. Well done for putting up with that rain. I usually take 2 or 3 things to start fires with in my tin… and of course , 2 clipper lighters . Life savers 😁

Clippers are good but I swap out for a zippo in winter, even if you run low on fuel you have cotton tinder in the lighter itself plus a spare flint so you will have sparks.

Always a challenge to get a fire going in rainy weather. I scraped some nice aromatic spruce tree resin and it seems to burn pretty good for starting a fire. That resin smells so good. If I go backpacking, winter or not, I'm bringing a giant box of matches. 😂

Yeah, I quit trying to light char cloth by laying it on or under the chert rock. I just spread out my char cloth in the tin and rain sparks down on it. Works much better that way. Also, you can just wrap a char cloth on the face of the stone so it covers both top, front, and bottom, and leave a hole in the middle for you to strike the stone. Once it's lit, pull the cloth off the stone immediately or it may put your spark out. If you have a decent knife, you can shave the outer layer from some split wood and use it as a dry platform. Rain will only penetrate so deep. Pick wood that is dead standing if possible but at least something not soaking in the wet ground. I keep a 6" ferro rod and striker as my main lighting system since it lasts pretty much forever and doesn't care if it's rainy or frigid cold. I also keep a lighter in a dry bag with candle wick wrapped around the top, fishing line at the bottom, and gorilla tape covering both. If I can get the lighter lit for just a moment, that wick will burn for a long time and won't run my butane empty. Good job for showing the hard parts of survival. Too many people watch videos and tv shows that make it look like anyone can just rub two sticks together in the rain if they have a poncho over them because the show doesn't show the 800 times it didn't light or that they dried off the tinder off-screen
@DazzyOutdoors

I love the sound of laying the char cloth flat in the tin! I'll be giving that method a go next time. You're right, that was another big mistake that I didn't really mention on video, my whole preparation before lighting the fire was poor. Not really processing the wood definitely was a big part of the failure. Some solid advice here and what I can add to my fire kit, really appreciate it!

Hey champ, been there done that. You aint alone, in that one. I started carrying gas stove, for cooking breakfast. Didnt like leaving fire pit smolding, midday. And i have grown to rely on it. Regarding your fire this time, strait to the point. You didnt do fire prep. Got to make those shavings, curls. If wet wood it needs to be split, exposing the dry inner that catches fire. But you where right, that was pretty bad weather😂Much love! best wishes!! Holmen.

@@DazzyOutdoors have you got a leather fire tinder pouch? to keep birch bark, cramp balls, cat tails, pine resin, dry grass, old man's breard moss. I just collect it as I walk & stuff it into the pouch until its full, saying that mine could do with topping up, time for a walk in the woods.
@mallyredfearn6834
@mallyredfearn6834 Жыл бұрын
I feel for you Daz! You need more options. The flint and steel is a reliable bit of kit, especially when stuff is wet because the ember dries out a wet tinder bundle first. Just keep adding to the ember. However, in the days when this was the only reliable method, they'd normally have a dry tinder bundle on their person; planning ahead. For you though, some waxed wood, available just about everywhere and dirt cheap will be a great back-up.. and always more than one lighter. This is when a Zippo comes into it's own; saved me many times. Fatwood shavings already prepared is another option, as is waxed string or the humble cotton wool and Vaseline. Always have a fero rod too. Really honest video.. I think everything I've mentioned, you actually already know to be honest..
@DazzyOutdoors
@DazzyOutdoors Жыл бұрын
Hi Mally, thanks for the advice. Having a dried tinder bundle prepped before hand would have made a big difference instead of making one up on the spot.. which ended up being pretty small. Glad you mentioned the zippo.. Ill be going back to that, although they dry out when not being used at least I can refill it before a trip so i'm certain it'll see me through. Appreciate the comment 😀

@@DazzyOutdoors Daz, the jute string you use is great for getting a flame but it doesn't really produce a hot enough flame to move to the next level when in those conditions, unless you do some serious prep work first. Far better to grow the ember in even suspect material such as the wet birch bark. Just put a few bits of the birch bark in the centre and roll it up like a burrito and let the ember do the work, adding more char cloth if needed. I noticed you had the char cloth under the flint Daz? Is that the way you normally do it rather than having it on the top. It was bad light and only watch it on my phone. Do you have fatwood? Happy to send you some if you don't have any.. This is what I do. I have fatwood shavings, taken from a stick, placed in little dealer bags lol.. I add these to a weak flame such as you had. When I've strengthened that weak flame, I have a few dog ends of the fatwood sticks that's left from doing the shavings.. I'll add a couple of these and maybe a few more shavings if needed, and I'll grow the flame that way when conditions are bad. All the best to you and let me know if you want some fatwood..

No disgrace to PUFO however, it seems to me that the correct and traditional way to use Flint & Steel with Charred Cloth is to place the cloth on TOP of your Flint, but you had it underneath. I suspect that a stray spark landed in your tin and caught on the cloth, but I might be wrong. Folk, unless they're content providers themselves, don't realise just how many times you need to move a camera, adjust height, angle, avoid shadow, wind noise and then forget to switch it on. 🤦‍ I watch a LOT of KZbin content and often think to myself, that steak must be cold by now with the number of camera angles they've filmed it from. 🤷‍ Runaway and live to fight another day and learn from it for the next venture.

Please just DON'T go wild camping. The very fact you don't even clear the pine needles below your attempted fire, shows that you are a danger to yourself and the environment. Even on a wet day the forest floor can be dry below the surface, meaning you could cause a fire to catch underground. Also, using an open fire is a sure way to be moved on or fined. At least use a twig stove or a fire stand.
