What a fair and honest review, ive been toying with both for a while. Now I'm convinced on the windburner! Seen too many reviews which seemed biased before the reviews even started! Nice to see actual facts!

I'm glad it helped! I love that I don't have to hide away in my tent on a sunny evening/morning just because it's windy. I'd be interested to see if different Jetboils perform better than the Flash did in this test. Thanks for watching 👍 James.

Ahh thanks a lot, Grant, that's very kind of you to say, and I'm impressed that you saw it all the way through! It's amazing just how small and light that combination of bivvy bag and quilt is. My heaviest tent (Soulo) and sleeping bag (Rab Ascent 900) come to 4 kg, compared to under 1 kg for the bivvy and quilt. I'm sure you'll enjoy it! Thanks, James.

@@joinmeoutdoors yeah I run the normal Fillo and the Thermarest Neo Air Topo Luxe with is about 850g or so combined so I use the bivi and hopefully the quilt to cut down some weight. Generally I can run a pack around 20lbs with everything for a 2-3 day trip including stopping and cafes and gas stations for some food

Great technical test, as a engineer as well only thing I could say is probably better to use a thermometer to boil water to a temperature rather than visual which would have not been as accurate. Interesting to see.

I fully agree, but I don't actually own a thermometer 😂 I was happy that the moment the bubbles started to roll on the surface should be quite a consistent temperature, but a digital thermometer would've been the perfect way to do it. There's always time to repeat and improve these tests for future geekouts 🤓 ATB, James.

Excellent test with good controls unlike many tests. Of course in the wild, winds are gusty. Next job is to test it v the Soto Windmaster. It doesn’t surprise me that Jet boil is so poor. The Windburner might win, but only because you can stand on top of it and see the Empire State from the UK🤣

@@joinmeoutdoors Mate, I spout more nonsense than Edward Lear! In all seriousness (yes me being serious😂) I’ve look at many comparisons of the jetboil v soto and the Windmaster beats it. Of all the units like jetboil, the Windburner does look the be the best. I think the Soto equals the Windburner in boil times. Only a blustery wind test in the wild could decide which is te best. It’s also a personal thing re what one looks for in a stove. If it does what you want at a price you’re happy with, It’s a winner. I’ve used the soto in high winds on summits etc without a guard. It hasn’t ever failed. In reality if is windy we’d all cook in our vestibules wouldn’t we? Willing you on to the 1000 subs. It’s no fluke. Your videos are interesting, informed, articulate and professional.

@@unclepeteswildadventures Maybe it's time for you to write a book or two then? 🤣 The Windmaster is quite the giant killer then. I like to cook outside and enjoy the views if I can, even if that involves getting the stove lit in my vestibule and then taking it outside. It's oddly enjoyable to watch it steaming away in the wind! 1,000 subscribers by Christmas would be amazing, and I'm really pleased that you're still enjoying my videos! 🙏

Good test and very controlled unlike some I have seen, I am too tight and northern to fork out money on fancy stoves, I got an amazon special years ago on something similar to the vango setup you used branded odoland.. and only cost me £20 with a windshield off aliexpress.. I only ever make drinks/cook in the vestibule anyway so works a charm and is a lower profile.. however when the time comes I now know to swerve a jetboil (I already knew they were overpriced) and go for an msr

I'm sure your £20 does the business in the vestibule 👍 At this time of the year it's rare that we'll be cooking outside the tent anyway (because who eats their evening meal at 16:30? 🤣), but I really enjoy sitting outside to make my meals on the longer nights, so the Windburner is a good tool for that. This test essentially confirms what I already know. Up until six months ago my go-to stove was a Soto Windmaster with various pots and for a sit on top canister it was very wind resistant. However about six months ago I bought an MSR Windburner on sale from American Amazon and it is now my go-to stove. Here in Northern California it seems to be always windy, particularly along the coast, and it was overwhelming even my Soto Windmaster but not the MSR Windburner. Of course no stove is perfect and the cons on the Windburner are price, poor simmering ability and weight but theses are cons I am willing to put up with to avoid having to worry about the effect of the wind on my stove. Let’s put it this way if the Windburner blows out I am probably in a typhoon and should seek shelter anyway.

Haha yes, this I fully agree with you - if the Windburner's expires in the wind, there's a good chance that the human operating it will also probably have expired due to the extreme weather! I'm glad it's doing the job for you 👍 James.

Afternoon James. Definitely an in depth and very interesting review. Though no jetboil minimo haha, the jetboils are a lot quicker when the lid is on to hold in the heat, my jetboil minimo will boil a litre in cold conditions in about 1 minute 25 (with the lid on). Not measuring how much gas I use. Cool review though buddy, enjoy the rest of your weekend and see you on your next adventure 🤟 🤙 😀

Hi Rich 🙂 I agree - all three stoves would be quicker with their lids on (which is how I would cook when out camping). All three lids were a fairly similar diameter, so heat loss for each setup should have been similar I think. Perhaps I'll repeat this same test with more stoves in the future! @@joinmeoutdoors just thought I'd add, I wasn't siding with the jetboil because I think they have so many different types out that unless a comparison was made between all of them, then the outcome might of been different, tbh I actually like my trangia 27 with the gas conversion stove, it's definitely windproof and it doesn't take that long to boil water. That's my favorite stove, even above my over priced minimo. Sometimes it just comes down to weight and bulk with what I wanna take 👌

If I had the time and stoves/money, it would be interesting to run the same tests on all the stoves on the market to see how they all compare. I have to say, I'd like a little Trangia for myself at some point. I think it would go well with my plans to go for a woodland hammock camp in the next 12 months 🙂 James.

Interesting test! It’s clear the MSR performs better in the wind but I’m really surprised how the Flash just went out. I’ve seen a few of these now, and the Flash always loses in terms of the boil time in the wind, but it’s never gone out. I wonder if you hit a sweet spot with the wind angle/direction that just hit the Flash in a way it really didn’t like. Amazing from MSR never the less.

Cheers Ste. I was really surprised when Luke was unable to cook outside with the Flash. We tried over and over again, trying to shelter it a bit as well, but it just couldn't hack it. So I got to enjoy sunrise while I cooked my brekkie, but Luke had to sit in his tent and miss out! I had the flash in a few different orientations for this test as well I think, so it just isn't able to burn in the wind, I'm afraid. Thanks for tuning in 🤜
