Well... its been a while since my last KZbin video. I can only say i'm very sorry guys. But i have had my hands full... Moving house, as well as my wife giving birth to our 3rd daughter has kept me very busy to say the least : ) But its all good, life is good!
So anyway, here's a video from last May. Its took me 7 months to edit haha : ) Me and Ray decided to go Wild camping using only Army surplus kit. I'm a big fan of Military kit anyway, but we thought it would be cool to try a camp using just the original, old skool Military kit. Hope you all enjoy watching

That was a great video. Pretty much all of my gear is US Army surplus and I don't care what anyone says, military surplus might weigh a little more but you absolutely can't beat the durability. Dwayne

Top tip from an ex Royal Engineer, after making your brew, keep the used tea bag to clean the Hexamine residue off the mess tins, works a treat.

When I was in the B.A. our hex stoves didn’t have the top attachment for the cup. You either turned it upside down for a flat surface with the bottom up, or you angled the two side parts into sort of triangle shape to sit your mess tin or aluminum coffee mug. Tops a nice addition.

I have used every bit of that kit back in my army days , still use most of it still , a wee tip for the mess tins , cover the bottom in tin foil then pull it off when your done , saves cleaning the soot off the tin . Good video 👍🏻🏕

Great vid. Love using the old British Army kit.Built to last! I think every kid I knew, had an angled torch,in the 70’s/80’s. I’m still using an un issued Pattern 58 bag. Still really warm. Got an Arctic bag and recently, upgraded to the new medium/ tropic bag system. All great kit,but not the lightest. But as a Marine told me once…”Travel light,Freeze at night. All the best.👍🏾🇬🇧

We made do with the dim L-head flashlights in Basic training, but once we got to Iraq we realized we needed the brightest lights that we could afford. The LED bulbs were just coming on the market and the PX sold an LED conversion as well as AA battery adapter kits for the L-heads. That made them much better, but still no where near as bright as the cheapest Surefire. I have still held on to my original lights and I found the dimmer lamp is sometimes a plus when light disciple is important.

Never had any of this kit when I was in B.A. in 74-82. Canadian forces started issuing Bivvie bags around early to mid 90. I took a spare tube type bivvie bag to a tailor had side seam cut too round 2/3rd from the top and put a heavy duty yyk zipper in it. Put some tie downs loops on the corners for tent pegs, and covered the flap on the top edge with Velcro and added a removable mosquito net on it, put another loop on the front centre in case I wanted to tie it on tree branch for extra space, worked really well. I wore B.A. green PLCE webbing instead of the Canadian crap,of the day, from 1994 until around 2006 ish? when the Canadians started issuing tacvest, didn’t like that one would have been better with a chest rig or a plate carrier. CF NCOs got tired of telling me not to wear it lol especially when I became a SNCO lol. A the good old days!

The American angled flashlight you’ll notice has a much nicer bulb without that black shadow in the center of whatever you’re looking at ….. the switch also has protective ears to prevent it from accidentally being switched on in your pack and draining the batteries which would leave the flashlight useless when you need it at night ….. the nice thing about both of those flashlights is you can get rechargeable batteries now and drop in replacement Cree LED lamps to make the device far more efficient than the designers could have ever hoped to achieve

Love that pack! And I wish I could find an affordable crusader mug, as much as I love my US Army canteen cup I love that British design. From what I hear they no longer issue canteens or cups, Camelbak bladders only. Crazy if you ask me. We never used bungee cords in the 80’s and I was surprised when I started seeing them on KZbin videos, like they were common! What size are you issued? Like what length and diameter of the cord? Is there a standard issue? Thanks, nice video.

Where did you get the lid, it looks like a proper manufactured one, I have a “cottage industry” one, but never seen ones like yours. I’d love to get one! Nice video, I started off with all surplus kit, I especially love the canvas poncho tents and bashas, but so, so heavy😟. It might be a tad politically incorrect at the moment, but I never let that get in the way, anyway, have you seen the Russian Ratnik basha. It really is a great bit of kit, a great improvement on our British one. Check it out, though may be difficult to acquire one in the present climate. Have been investing in some new-fangled ultra-light kit recently, for the sake of my poor back!🤷‍♂️😁

Thanks for watching Mat, and for the info on some other kit, I’ll certainly check that stuff out. As for the Crusader cup lid. The Crusader mug lid is made by a company called Heavy Cover, although they stopped making them a long time ago, so they are now very rare, and sell for loads more than the actual cup 😁 The plastic BCB lid is completely useless. I’d love to do that, but I’ve only got a few items from the WW2 era. Although I do have a 1944 dated US mess tin 😎 Thank you for watching, all the best, Jay

The rations when i joined in 74 were a bloody disgrace…..soldiers are so lucky today…..and they deserve it.

I’m some sort of weird sandwich! I think anyway lol. I’ve never had any rations British Army Cadets/Regular Force (68-82 Compo of 1 type or another), Canadian Militia (TA)/RegForce (1983-84, 1989-2009 IMP’s), USA (MRE mostly surplus store in Canada), French (odd one here and there ) + USA (1993 CAMBODIA) that I didn’t like.

@@Wardog-rf1tx lol…..I think it was just the bacon burger I loathed…..a very curious thing; some blokes loved it! I ate a boxed French ration in 1976 issued to us on exercise in France…..10 Gitanes, a miniature of brandy, very good tinned fish and tinned meat with a packet of plain biscuits…….I wish I had saved it…🤣

@@mikewingert-savagelyerudite the French ones I got in Cambodia were missing the alcohol, SNCO stole them before issuing them to the troops.

Can't beat a roll mat and the bouncing bomb. Got to ditch the right angle torch. They are hideous.

Yeah I totally agree buddy! Those right angled torches where awesome back in the day… but now, there’s so many options that just blow them out the water! 😎 Thank you for watching mate, all the best, Jay
