About ten years ago, I was dancing with a guy named Marlin to this song at Bike Week. We were having a BLAST (both having grown up with funk) and this chick came up to us and started screaming at us that we were racists for dancing to this song!!! Marlin is a 6'4 black guy who played arena football and I'm a 5'8" white chick...both of us are bikers...both of us own (I still own) the orignial Wild Cherry album! We just laughed at her and kept on groovin! Things have CHANGED! I'm so glad I grew up when I did...we had so much fun and nobody tried to subdivide us!

People keep calling Wild Cherry a one hit wonder but they had 5 songs that cracked the Billboard hot 100 chart between 1975 and 1979. So hardly a one hit wonder. This is just the most known/still played.

Wild Cherry used to play at a local high school when nobody knew who they were... just a band from across the Ohio River a few miles away. Even more interesting is they are NOT the most famous local talent in Stuebbenville, OH/Weirton, WV area... that belonged to another hometown guy... Dean Martin.

True story...The lead singer/guitar player retired a fricken multi millionaire just from this one song. They were touring with a Black Funk band, and became friends with those guys. One night after a Gig, the Funk Band members were joking around and asked them to "Play that Funky Music White Boy." To which Wild Cherry wrote this song a couple of days later. It changed everything. One of life's funny, and true, feel-good stories.

Great reaction! It was fun watching you enjoy it so much - you had me laughing. Yeah, and I don't know how that dude was spinning his trumpet. If I tried to do that, the thing would be flying across the room. But always loved this song - was so young when it came out, about age 13 and my friends and I used to love to dance to it - still do. I think they were a one hit wonder which is too bad, because this song has stood the test of time and they were talented.

This is a classic for us 80’s kids. The best thing about the music from our generation was all about the musicianship. That transcended EVERYTHING......race was not a consideration. It was simply about grooving to the music and partying❤️. Love of the music translated to love of your fellow fellow man / woman. Nobody cared or were offended about the “White Boy”....it was seen as a compliment, not as a racial dis! We grooved, loved and respected each other. One big party, filled with love and happiness. Check out the Average White Band.

That sure sells them a bit short. They had at least 5 other songs make the Billboard Hot 100. Their lone slower "love" song released as a single, "Hold On" in 1977, plus more solid funk 1977-79: I Feel Sanctified; Hot to Trot; It's All Up to You; I Love My Music; Baby Don't You Know. All are worth a KZbin search and listen!

The funny thing about this song is that the record was shipped to White radio stations omitted the words "White boy" though the song became a big hit anyway! I could just imagine the reaction of the White folks who only heard that version the first time they heard it with the complete chorus! Think this is something - you should also hear: "Gimme Some Lovin'" by The Spencer Davis Group, ""Expressway to Your Heart" by The Soul Searchers, "Good Lovin'" by The Young Rascals, "One Bad Apple" by The Osmond Brothers, "Lowdown" by Boz Scaggs , "What You Won't Do For Love" by Bobby Caldwell, "Sara Smile" by Hall & Oates and ANYTHING by Teena Marie (especially "Square Biz", "Work It", "Fire And Desire" (with Rick James) and "Tribute to Smokey Robinson")

Dude... my hair was like that back then too - except bigger! I was a white boy with a fro like Doctor 'J'. I only had it done once, but it lasted for a long, long time. Only problem was when it started growing out. My hair was kind of a sandy blond color back then, and it grew out straight, from the top/back of my head. But the perm stayed out on the edges. So, it looked like I had a huge daggone Cheerio (like the cereal) on my head! Lol... Great show, again!

I remember being in the gym in 3rd grade in 1977 with the other classmates and for some reason we weren't wearing gym clothes. We were just standing around with our coats on like we were waiting for something. And some teacher came in with a boom box and pressed the play button and "Play That Funky Music" started blasting and I remember the other kids going completely nuts! Oh my God did they love this song. I was from a kind of sheltered background and my parents didn't even play the radio at home so I didn't know what this was. It was great, though, just seeing everyone lose their minds and start dancing...

As a kid back in the 80s I found this song by accident. I was looking for Black Water which is by the Doobie Brothers where they sang "I wanna play some funky Dixie land, mama come and take me by the hand." Of course I didn't know it was by the Doobie Brothers. I thought that was the title of the song instead of Oh Black Water (which is about the Mississippi River) and so I thought it was this single by Wild Cherry instead. Needless to say I was a little bit shocked at my mistake but I said nah nah,....I think I'll keep it...the record, no need to return it. Hey it's pretty good. I think I remember my older brother listening to this too. Later in early 90s the song was in the movie Evolution. But it was like hey this ain't the Doobie Brothers?

Wish you would play some Helen Reddy music. She was a superstar back when I was in college. She announced to the song. The song is practically autobiographical. Singers dad wanted him to remove the words white boy but he refused to and it was a one hit wonder but they have benefited from the rest of their lives. His Dad decided he was happy he left the words in. I was in my twenties and I was on the Dance Floor every time this song was played. I still have my 45 RPM record of it. It has to be in my list of top 10 favorite songs.

A "One Night Stand" is when a band is engaged for one night only and, each is usually in a different city. So if you do 120 one night stands in a row your band will play in 120 venues, and possibly 120 different cities, in that time. It's a grueling mix of performance and travel and, usually for very poor pay.

Yeah, this brings back some memories ... this was a *huge* hit! It got a *ton* of play on the radio ... and gobs of play on the family stereo, too! But I could only play it using the headphones, 'cause my step-father didn't want to hear "that crap!" At the skating rink I went to, it got played a couple of times every session! I dance-skated to it (jumps, spins, splits, everything!) *and* speed-skated to it, too ... not sure which I liked doing more! 😁 [Now I'm thinking of "Glory Days", another *awesome* song!]

They actually got their name from a flavor of cough drops. Lead singer Rob Parissi said the song was written by what actually happened while they were playing these lame shows for people. A brother turned around and said to him "Hey man, when you gonna play something funky, white boy?"

They were #1 on the BILLBOARD Charts on 9/18/1976, so, YEP, I'd say that you HAVE heard of them- EVEN though- 'YOU' probably...weren't even a 'Gleam' in your Daddy's eyes, yet' !!! Ha-Ha ...

This video is a real time capsule. Back when the afro was in fashion and nobody was screaming "cultural appropriation". Simpler times when people just didn't care about PC bullshit, they were just having fun. No wonder the music was so much better then.

@Grant420 Which is why it never made a comeback, just like the ugly 80's perm.
