The 60's and 70's were a magical time when funk and soul and folk and well everything belonged to everyone. White guys could funk, blacks could sing country and just any combo you can think of and ALL genres were better for it.

The Commodores, Wild Cherry, Rick James, Marvin Gaye, Donna Summer, KC and the Sunshine Band, Sly and the Family Stone, Parliament, Michael Jackson, Earth Wind and Fire, Prince, Sheena Easton, the BeeGees and so much more. This is some straight-up soulful "Stank-Face" FUNK from the 70's!!! When this song came out back in the day and wherever it was played, the dance floors got packed at the clubs, discos, wedding receptions, high school dances, block parties, house parties, cookouts, picnics, etc...and I'm talking about all races, all skin colors, nationalities & ethnicities would just "JAM" to this "BANGER!!!" The single hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on September 18, 1976; it was also No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Soul Singles chart. The single was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America for shipments of over 2 million records and eventually sold 2.5 million in the United States alone. Not bad for some funky white boys.

This song is actually based on a true story. The band was originally a straight-up rock band, but this funky pre-disco sound was emerging as the latest thing of the time. They were playing in a club in (I believe) Cleveland and started trying out their funk material when a brother in the audience shouted (as the song goes) "Play that funky music, white boy!" And the idea for their biggest hit was born.
@jeffbittner72233 жыл бұрын
The back story is awesome. This is a disco band at the end of disco giving you a hot shot of funk. A musician is a musician. On line you can find the lead singer talking about how it happened and fighting the record company to leave it right.

Lol...when I was in high school band practice a buddy of mine did that spinning thing with his trumpet. He got a good spin going then all of a sudden it was flying through the air right at the percussion section. Nailed the girl playing marimba in the face. She goes down blood everywhere. Girls screaming. Teacher yelling. Best practice of the semester. In addition to being kicked out of the band he also, basically, got detention for the rest of the year(and any crap thing the principal needed a volunteer for,like moving tables setting up displays things like that) the girl got a bunch of stitches in her forehead and was kept overnight in the hospital.

The song is actually autobiographical for the band. They were a rock cover band who would include their own stuff, but noticed that disco was taking over everywhere. The band leader (singer/guitarist) told everyone that he couldn't get more gigs if they didn't include some dance music themes. And the drummer said that they had someone come up to them and say "you better play that funky music white boy".
@amliv774 жыл бұрын
Wild Cherry was a hard rock band. They had a regular gig at the 2001 Club, and with disco big at the time, their sound didn't go over well. After one show, a black audience member shouted, "Play some funky music, white boy." Parissi decided they should, and wrote down the phrase on a bar order pad. They recorded it in Cleveland with a disco sound: drum and bass mixed way up front

Fun fact: the song was about what they were going through at the time like ‘burning down the one night stands’ meant that it was getting scarce playing rock after more and more rock clubs were closing down and after more and more discos were opening and so they had do start learning disco and after one of their performances they were approached by these black men and they jokingly asked something like “are you white boys gonna play some funky music” or something like that so he tried to find a way to fit in and make something of rock meets disco and so after making the song he took it to a bunch of record labels but got repeatedly turned down because of the certain lyric “play that funky music white boy” and 5-6 weeks after it was released it became a hit
