In this soft spoken talk, I tell you about several true stories of feral children, such as Marcos Rodriguez, Marie-Angélique le Blanc and Victor de l'Aveyron, who survived alone for years in the wilderness. Some of them befriended wild animals, others resisted them. Their returns to society was always complicated and had different outcomes. I also tell you about other stories of children who would have grown up in seclusion, some controversial like the case of Kaspar Hauser, some that were exposed as hoaxes like Amala and Kamala in India in the 1920's, and also mythical or fictional feral children (Romulus and Remus, Mowgli, Tarzan...).
Even though each of these destinies is unique and there are not enough occurences to draw general conclusions, they raise many questions about cognitive development, interspecies communication, or what is innate and what is acquired in humans.

Wow, I was not expecting you to take this angle on the topic. It was really interesting to hear the history and truth behind these children. I hope one day you share more on the relationship between humans and nature and some of your beautiful readings of mythical stories

Excited for this one, I've always found feral children fascinating! It's interesting how after a certain point of not learning a language, they will never be able to learn one. Makes you wonder what underdeveloped skills we're stuck with simply because we weren't taught to do so as children
@AK-jt7kh
@AK-jt7kh 4 ай бұрын
Probably very few. The issue with language is that it is kind of the foundation from which all other things we learn stem from. Neurons in the brain link new information to existing ones of language. The brain is very plastic & changes/grows quite easily, but I suppose a brain without these language skills would learn other things. So the neurons that would have been dedicated to language have been reorganized to perform other tasks. You would have to convince all of those neurons to reassign themselves, the possibility of which probably varies by individual, and probably is also somewhat related to a persons access to nutrition growing up. Anyways, most other skills, since they're going to stem from or link to language can probably be acquired. We just don't necessarily know how to encourage the brain to acquire those skills effectively (like reading speed). It's easy to imagine how we might solve those puzzles though - as the brain is very plastic. However language is fundamental & comes first. Most things in life are probably inaccessible to learn without it, and learning other things compounds are understanding of it.

If I hear that an Indigenous American child became "attached, as an adopted child or a maid, we don't know" to a French Canadian lady in the early 1700s (as an ethnic French Canadian myself) My brain immediately leaps to the form of slavery practiced among indigenous Canadians at that time. When French Canadians had an enslaved person in their ownership/custody, it o overwhelmingly tended to be one who was given to them by an indigenous person they were associated or allied with or related to....captives were taken during intertribal conflicts, often as a "replacement" for a relative who had been killed or taken this way, and though they were not sold, they were sometimes given away. A combination of factors including how this type of slavery was approached by indigenous people, and the requirements French Law made of slave owners, make it historically challenging for contemporary people to define the relationship...it is often hard for us to say if the young person is a servant or an adopted child because of the cultural expectations and laws of the time and place. The relationship usually looked like a combination of the two. They might seem like an ill-treated step child or a much loved servant or any combination of the two roles.

Oh my god this is so perfect for me - as a child, my dad used to tell me stories about wild animals, and I always imagined running around with them and being friends with them. Then when I found out there were actually children who grew up with animals, I was fascinated! Thank you for helping me connect with these memories

I've learned so much from this excellent channel. I know all about Joan of Arc and Catherine the Great, just to name two examples. I've heard the information about the Orion Project several times, due to waking up during that part of the recording, and I still can't believe that NASA was seriously considering using nuclear explosions to accelerate rockets to escape velocity! That idea seems crazy to me.

35:44 Unfortunately, tragic cases like Genie, a girl who was horribly neglected, have shown that unless a child learns to understand speech and to speak themselves before the age of two, they will never develop language skills. It is a crucial window for this skill to be learned from the people around the child, and if this stage of intellectual development is cruelly denied to such a young child, they can never be taught to speak afterwards. Therefore, either Kasper was mistaken about his early childhood development or he was lying. It would not have been possible for him to suddenly gain the ability to speak and understand language at the age of nearly sixteen. Likewise, it would have been impossible for him to suddenly be able to walk at that late age, his muscles would have atrophied so badly that he would not have been able to support his own weight on his legs. I am cheerful, aren't I? Lol. However, it is a fascinating story and one wonders why such a deceit was practiced upon the people Kasper met at age sixteen. Mighty strange.
